Tim Janus has withdrawn from Saturday's Nathan's qualifier in Boston and is expected to compete in Queens June 29. This keeps Tom Gilbert's hopes of retaining the wild card lead alive.

This comes after the day Kobi’s big event is announced . Coincidence , I think not . IFOCE is trying to hamper this event any way they can . They are not happy about this believe me .

Tim is overcome with grief over the death of James Gandolfini which is why he withdrew

Yes, I think he flew to Rome immediately to accompany the body back to the US.

He probably got paid to stay in New York so there would be a headliner at CitiField.

Tim’s withdrawal from the Boston qualifier makes it even more difficult for his roomie CLC to qualify unless Denmark gets the wildcard and Booker decides not to compete.

I do not think MLE at this point cares one whit what Koby does. They have moved on, what he does has had no negative effect on them whatsoever. Koby is his own worst enemy in some ways. His visa will be up, he may or may not be able to renew it, I do not see much future for him here or in Japan unless he can really monetize through his endorsements. Contests are pretty much known to be non-contests. Guiness Records? Honestly, one is enough. Just more of the same on his resume unless he is getting paid for each one. Some people here see conspiracy everywhere. Koby is busy, MLE is busy, and this was supposed to be about Janus. So how does OJ know this? Must be on FB or a public twitter feed.

Kobayashi’s departure might not have had a negative impact on MLE gross revenue, but Joey Chestnut’s annual earnings have dropped from $218,500 in 2010 to $161,400 in 2012

With all due respect to OJ, you do not have Chestnut’s nor MLE’s tax records and are going on what is reported in the press and is publicly available. While your statistics and research are excellent, there is honestly no way for you to know the true profits or losses of Nathans, MLE, any organization or any individual eater. You could check the annual reports of companies but that would still not give you evidence to support what you interpret from your statistics above. Only individual tax returns and corporate tax returns could yield that information. And that you will not have access to for obvious reasons.

Joey’s earnings might be down but guess who’s earnings are up? The only people who make real money at MLE are the Sheas. That’s why the truly smart eaters are all independants. When the bulk of IFOCE realise this MLE will go out of business, like they should. It will probably never happen, though because as P.T. Barnum said, “There’s a sucker born every minute.”

12:57, those numbers are the reported numbers for Joey. The source for each was the same. The numbers may not be exact, but one has to assume, given the continuity of the source and the disappearance of Pepto-Bismol as a sponsor and major source of income for Joey, that the downward trend of Joey’s income is correct.

I can agree in theory about the numbers for Joey. I say in theory because we honestly do not know how much money he gets in kind or other. But even if they are correct, even if Pepto Bismol is no longer a sponsor and others are not sponsoring, like the offshore casinos, we really do not know how much the Shea Brothers numbers are down. One can well assume that they are because of the economy for the last several years. Still all speculation. I would still bet that Nathans has weathered those storms very well. What they earn, what they do has something to do with July 4th, their signature event. But I would bet that it is a small thing in that it might be highly watched but does it make people buy Nathans hotdogs?

It looks as if Tom’s wildcard spot will remain alive. It appears that both CLC and BLB may not qualify for the finals this year. It’s really getting tough for men to qualify without eating 30 HDBs.

I just cannot get over how far people have come in hot-dog eating, just in the last dozen years or so. In the pre-Kobayashi era, prior to 2001, today’s totals consumed by more than a dozen eaters would have been enough to have won the Mustard Belt. Perhaps my imagination is very limited, but that’s just mind-boggling to me.

I do, however, think that Joey’s and Koby’s totals have just about exhausted the male stomach capacity. I don’t see any male eater being able to eat more than 70 or 71, as long as the same-sized dogs are used, and for women, that total is probably about 50, regardless of how flawless the technique used by either gender.

I think it’s foolish to assume that Tom will compete on the 4th even if his numbers hold. Tom has been against the MLE contract and I don’t see him just signing for Coney and then going back to Indy. Because if he did, he would be sued for breaching contract.

Has anyone ever been sued by MLE?

I don’t know if anyone had actually been sued by MLE but it doesn’t mean they won’t. The contract makes it pretty clear they will take legal action if you violate it

MLE has threatened at least one lawsuit, but as far as I know, actual legal proceedings have not ever been started

While not actually a lawsuit, a FCC complaint was filed against MLE/WIP for excluding Arnie Chapman from the 2005 Wing Bowl resulting in a $4,000 fine
