Kenan Thompson is not earning his money today… though he is a rather fat manboy… he seems to know absolutely nothing about CE and was not prep’d about the sport. He is barely talking and only making weird noises… and he has pissed off MC Shea on multiple occasions…

Sanctioned by the International Federation of Competitive Eaters, watch as seven professional chow-hounds compete to win 1 million TripRewards points.
Now they’re stealing from the Chowhound name?
WTF?

That was fun to watch! The problem with televised and streamed contests is that I’m always sitting there by myself cheering at the screen. Not as much fun as in person
I can’t believe they switched to weights, though. Way to mess up the standard!

Joey by more than a pound!! That was an eating exhibition.

Joey crushed again… Sonya did extremely well, and Tim placed top 3 where he of course belongs. I just wish I knew how the others did. People would like to know how Conti, Wing Kong, Steakbellie, etc. did. I especially want to know who came in last place. My money is on “Philly Guy” Pete Miernicki bringing up the rear as only he can. I don’t think he even got past the first tray of wings…

What the hell is going on with X? He eats 41 1/2 hot dogs tow days ago and then lets a girl edge him out for second. I dont understand this. Sh!!!
Anyway I do have to admit that S. T. is probably one of the top 10 female eaters in the world today and perhaps one of the 50 best eaters of all time to include the men. Shell have to go a bit to keep up with those girls in Japan though. But shes not too far off.

Jake I bet Philly Guy got as much prize money as X, S. T. or anyone else. It does not matter where he finished becaue he tried and did his best and thats what counts.

I was watching SportsCenter on ESPN and Joey’s win was #2 in the Top 10 plays of the day. Some stupid arena football touchdown was #1.

What amazes me is the frequency with which very reputable records are being broken by today’s eaters. Yes, sure, Joey deserves lots and lots of credit in trouncing the wing record for a 12 minute contest — 5.09 lbs. But look at Sonya’s and Tim’s totals, who finished in second and third, respectively. They BOTH broke the record by a good margin, and it took an even greater performance by Joey to win. And Tim’s record-breaking performance was only 2 days after eating the double deuce in dogs. Man oh man!
By the way, does anyone have the totals for the rest of the competitors? It’s almost as if they didn’t compete at all, when so much attention is given to only the top three finishers That’s not right and it undermines one’s incentive to compete and it can also breed resentment towards the Kobys, Joeys, Sonyas, Pats, and Tims who either win or are in the top 3 most of the time.
Also, what was the prize money breakdown among all eaters? All I’ve heard about has been the 1 million trip reward points. How were they broken down? Does anyone know?
Joey Chestnut is truly at Kobayashi’s level right now. Joey is so good that had Kobayashi not improved over the last 2 years, Joey would have already overtaken him as # 1 in the world. As great as that is, let’s not forget the rest of the competitors. To do so would not only be unprofessional and unkind, it would also be fatal for CE as we know it. Because without having others to compare great perfomances against, those wonderful performances really AREN’T so great.

How are you determining they broke records? I do think that wings should be counted by weight, but they’ve always been counted by number in the past, right? Or am I missing the weight record?
Also, Steakbellie says he has all the results, but we might have to wait for him to recuperate a bit. Soon!

I nominate Rhonda Evans for the position of “IFOCE Director of Record Keeping”. Her opinions are spot on, especially the ones about fairness to all eaters and how lack of record keeping could breed resentment of top ranked eaters. Everyone who eats should be counted.

Did anyone hear that Joey received a bye for Nathan’s on sportscenter last night during the triprewards wings clip on sportscenter top plays? Is this true? If so did he get it for winning wings?

Major League Eating has the results posted (different writeup than IFOCE) and it appears to be accurate.

My old nemisis Wing Kong, had a breakout performance and I want to give him some serious props. It will take all I have to take him in the Philly Qualifier. I may have to cheat.
As far as the records go I believe the other contests were actually by weight, and then reported by multiplying the weight by an average wing weight to get a wingcount.

My God! Wing Kong’s performance of eating 3.9 lbs is truly phenomenal! He finished ahead of a bonafide top 10 eater and seasoned veteran, Crazy Legs Conti! Congratulations WK!

In most cases you can come up with the number of wings by converting the weight to ounces and dividing the total weight consumed by the average weight of the meat from each wing (.5 oz.).
Hence, Joey’s 7.05 lbs = 112.8 oz / .05 = 225.6 Wings.

SB is correct – what was used at the wing contest in Buffalo was 0.5 ounces of meat per chicken wing to get a count. So, at 32 wings to the pound, (which is kinda high for these wings – they were meaty from what I saw, and SB can back me up or refute), Joey ate 225.6 wings, Sonya ate 192.4, and Tim ate 172.2. Comparing apples to apples, I think the highest amount for a 12 minute contest was at the wing contest in Buffalo in 2006, where Chip ate 79 ounces, or 158 wings. Joey and Sonya’s amount even beat what the AICE has claimed as a world record, 5.4 lbs in 15 minutes (no, I’m not attempting to stir anything up, just stating facts).

I was wrong – it appears that the record is Sonya’s 5.03 pounds in Buffalo in 2004 that is listed as the 12 minute record. Rhonda, as far as I know, the only prize in that contest was the 1 million points, and Joey got them all.

The Wings were very meaty and were physically WARM, making it very easy to clean, and making such a great performace for Joey, possible. Jaw strength was not much of a factor, but capacity was (as compared to other wing contests). There appeared to be even counts of Drums and Blades, and Charles Hardy was very clear with the Eaters that they were to clean the wings (and not take one bite and throw) Kate, Charles and Ryan were very hands on during the event making sure things ran perfectly as George and Keenan worked the Mic.
Also I want to thank the MLE for taking very precise weights for all of the eaters as well as doing a fine job recording and presenting the totals within 24 hours. It felt very fair and precise leaving me very few excuses!

Great info from Wild bill and Steakbellie… speaking for everyone we appreciate the inside information we couldn’t get from the webcast. I am also very happy that every CE entrant had there totals listed on MLE.com. Kinda how I thought the breakdown would be (with pete bringing up the rear), though Wild Bill probably surprised some people with his performance… It would have been cool if chipburger, humblebob, and pat were in this one..

If the wings were avg to above avg size & they weren’t licking the sauce of the wings (like Boone) .5 oz is more than reasonable to assume.

Jake, while I appreciate the kudos for my performance, I believe you meant Wing Kong – I was there as an alternate, and did not compete. ? – by weight to count conversion, had they been the wings that were used in Buffalo, that is what they would have calculated to. As they were larger wings, the count is probably lower, but you can’t disagree that a new record was set by weight.

Liz – tough to say. As they don’t bother with weights at Wing Bowl, I would assume that you will have to continue counting wings by quantity for the fantasy league.

My bad Wing Kong… I correct my props given to Wild Bill and give it to Wing Kong… you and steakbellie have been moving up the CE ladder… almost like a tag team. Wild Bill I guess I subconsciously thought you were in it. They should have made the event 10 people. That way people like you and humble bob could have been in it. Its unfortunate that you and the humble one had to be bumped so someone like Pete Mcneirki (or however you spell it) could give his underwhelming performance….

Also, Steakbellie and Pete did a good job eating over 2 lbs off the bone. A few years ago those totals would have won been right in the hunt for Buffalo wing eating title.
For if memory serves me correctly I believe Oleg Zhornitskiy won the 2002 inaugural event with 74 wings, which is 2 lbs 5 oz. The Great “Z” was ranked well within the top 10 at the time.

Jake from SF,
I’m sure it would have been more exciting if my spot was given up for anyone of those eaters you mentioned (Humble Bob, Chip, Pat or Wild Bill)…But every once in a while it’s nice when we table enders get a big chance to see where we stack up against some of the really great eater. And as humbling as it was I’d do it again in a minute

CORRECTION – SportsCenter might not have mentioned Joey getting a bye into Nathan’s with his wing win, but other news sources are claiming that. My mom called me (yeah, weird) and said she heard on an ABC news report that Joey had earned a spot at Coney by winning the wings contest.
Has anyone else heard this or know where this might have come from? Is this like that time at the St. Patrick’s Day contest when Rich Shea was saying on the air about how whoever won the contest would take over the #2 ranking?

Kong – you did great, and probably better than I would have done. There is NO reason why someone should give up a spot that they earned by paying attention to the sign up. The eaters that were in the contest deserved to be there. If only Joey had missed his flight
