There are two recent blog entries about eating contests from the 1880s: OCWeekly has an entry about an 1885 garlic eating contest in Orange County (the winner ate 3 pounds) and OldNewsTom reports on a bet that a diner could not gain more than five pound from a single meal (via Nashville Scene)

    The second story is funny because 5 lbs is almost a pedestrian number nowadays.
