“Wedges & Wings”, Spike TV MLE #2, announced
PRNewsWire.com has a press release about the second MLE event to be televised on Spike TV:
Spike TV and Major League Eating present JOEY CHESTNUT vs. KOBAYASHI (and the other top eaters in the world) in chicken wing (Buffalo Wild Wings(R)) and potato wedge consumption in Las Vegas, Tuesday, October 9 from the Fremont Street Experience in downtown Las Vegas.
This one hour special, MLE Chowdown: Wedges And Wings, will air Thursday, October 18 at 11:00pm ET/PT on Spike TV.

Joining Chestnut and Kobayashi will be the top Major League Eaters in the world including Patrick Bertoletti (winner of Spike TV’s St. 2007 Patrick’s Day Chowdown), Tim “Eater X” Janus, “Humble” Bob Shoudt, Richard LeFevre, Juliet Lee, and Hall Hunt.
This event marks the second MLE on Spike TV. The first, The St. Patrick’s Day Chowdown, featuring corned beef and cabbage, green donuts, and jalapenos, drew a robust 739,000 viewers on March 17.
The press release says that 16 eaters will compete, leaving 8 unnamed.

I never told anybody to do anything ..I just express my opinion about the situation and anyone else has the right to do the same ..it’s called “Freedom of Speech”.
I was told (through e-mail) “..Spike selected certain characters that in their eyes fit into the format that they have chosen..”,
..It’s my opinion “someone” is trying to discourage the larger “natural” eaters, to fit an “Image” that’s being pushed …THAT SUCKS! ..don’t call it a “Sport” if you’re gonna have 16 people in a eating tournament and the #16th ranked eater isn’t there!

I dunno Pat. It seems like a combination of various levels of talent and personality might be best. MAybe they’re trying to spread the “reward” of a TV appearance around to some of the lower ranked guys. As a table ender myself, I can’t argue with that.

Pat makes a great point. This is not a “contest” if the field was handpicked. What’s the point of rankings if you ignore a chance to finally put them to good use? The rankings are supposed to be based on eaters ability, not on their personality or how they look in front of a camera. This is just more proof that this isn’t about the eaters but about how much money can be made. It’s more important to certain people to please the network (not even the sponsor this time) than keep up whatever integrity the sport has that the eaters themselves have created and maintained.
Pat, you have my support and I look forward to the day that someone there takes you seriously. You have one of the biggest hearts in CE and the emotion you display when you are given the chance to speak about CE shows you truly love what you do.

Only a small handful can actually win this “tournament” – I know that MLE headquarters was pushing for a lot of us “more colorful” eaters to get in, and Spike TV will, hopefully, get on board, someday really soon ( I’m getting older and weaker), and when they do, they will get the best special they have ever had, and higher ratings.
Personalities drive programs – a lot of the Survivor and other winners are forgotten, but dudes like Johnny Fairplay, Big Tom, Rupert, Elizabeth (now on The View), Omarosa(Apprentice), Yao-Man, The dwarf team and “the Hippies” from the Amazing Race – these people are why the shows get high ratings, and these are the characters that people talk about around the water cooler.
Pro wrestling has many great personalities we’ve all “loved”, and most of them will never win a belt – even though are seems to be 7,234 Championship belts out there!! That sport was built on muscle, and maniacs!
There are many great eaters going to Vegas with fun personalities, don’t get me wrong. BUT, It sucks, especially for someone as high ranked as Pat – who is a great eater, to be left out. Keep going – we’ll get our chance…………………..I hope

I see your point OH, but not every contest has to be filled by eaters ranked #1 through however many spots at the table there are. For the sake of promoting CE and putting a good show in front of a national audience (which benefits us all in the end), I’d rather the powers-that-be hand pick the best group of eaters. Whether that’s based on looks, eating ability, personality or some combination of all three.
Besides, do you really think all IFOCE contests don’t feature a hand-picked group of eaters (they’re not first-come-first-served). But that’s a debate for another day!

Pat i am not really a big fan of yours anymore and i think you know the reason, but i sympathize with you regarding the SPIKE show. I agree with Joe about the O&A affiliation. Shea’s dont want them to hype your image with SPIKE and O&A. It is more along the lines of getting revenge at radio DJ’s that chose not to play ball with them in the past. Remember last year the IFOCE was interested in doing some promotion with the show and it fell through? Well that could be the reason. Has nothing to do with your puke video or your physique. This is alka seltzer all over again minus a lottery pool. This really hurts because its pick and choose like choosing up a softball or football team picking favorites while others are left out in the cold feeling hurt. At least you were initially considered for a possible appearance even though that is not much of a consolation. Many were not even considered via an initial email. I was one of those. They could have found a spot for me in the broadcast booth. They chose not to. Trust me i lost zero sleep over it. I contemplated doing Oct commentary on the SPIKE issue focusing on eaters that got the short end of the stick but its a waste of my time and wear and tear on my keyboard. . Nothing will come out of it. People will read it get their jollies and forget about it.

Mega, I just think it’s inherently unfair, why try to get better if someone ranked lower then you can leapfrog right over you, I think it’s an insult to lower ranked eaters that the rankings don’t mean anything past the Top Ten or so.
I don’t bitch about not being able to afford to fly all over the country or the fact that my vehicle’s a POS that I wouldn’t trust to make it to a Krystals qualifier, that’s “tough shit”, but if I earned the rank of #16 (thanks for the bump, Dale! 😉 ) and there’s a 16 eater tournament happening, I should be there. ..I have said my piece…PEACE! 🙂

Thank God the prime time shows on the majoe networks don’t have to compete with an entity with such big drawing power as a Spike TV MLE event, and I’m sure the respective producers of those shows are breathing a sigh of relief, given the MLE 11:00 P.M air time.
I know, that comment is a “Menchettiism,” so to speak. Honestly, I would like to see it, but I’m in bed fantasizing by 10:00 P.M.
By the way, I didn’t see Chip’s, Sonya’s, Arturo’s, or Crazy Legs’ names. Are they not going to be there? Does anyone have the complete roster?

You guys are retarded. There is no ulterior motive here other than making a compelling show that features eaters who Spike and the IFOCE think might be interesting. Forget all this business about the Sheas’ getting satisfaction by denying someone entry. Just because 16 eaters are going doesn’t mean there are only 16 intriguing characters out there. Someone had to miss the cut.

If my memory serves me correctly, in the U.S. Open the top 10 or so eaters were given byes and the remaining eaters names were picked at random (i.e. names drawn from a hat). It seemed very fair because at least a handful of eaters ranked # 30 through 50 were chosen.
For the people that did not get selected as one of the 16 or 24 or whatever, the MLE people can’t select everybody. Some are bound to be disappointed. Some of those, as already evidenced on this site, are bound to bitch and moan and be unprofessional about it.
I would not do too much whining unless you plan to leave the MLE ranks by your own volition. Otherwise, you may have to leave using the bogus reason of not liking the contract, unfair business practices, etc.
Other than Gentleman Joe, like him or not, he is the only eater I’ve seen exit the IFOCE in the last 4 years that was worth a cuss, yet he was no tremendous loss, as nearly a dozen eaters have come along better than he is who DON’T bitch and moan.
If you don’t like the contract, don’t sign; don’t “join.” It’s as simple as changing the channel on T.V. to watch something else.

Why do you fools insist on believing that SPIKE decided on which eaters would be chosen for the show. The press release states Dave Baer is the executive producer. Fishman and Martello work for SPIKE .Do they know Pat Philbin or anyone else in the ifoce for that matter? Aside from Joey , Sonya and a few others they have about as much insite on mle eaters than we know about the taiwan boxing championship in china. Baer or maybe one of the Shea’s recommended to SPIKE a list of eaters with photos that would fit their criteria. The few overweight eaters in the ifoce that were originally considered were probobly tossed in the garbage can or something like that. If you dont see Chip or any other top ranked eater in the lineup it is only because they had other more important committments to attend to.

There is no defense for not including Pat. If you’re putting in the best competition then how does the #16 rank eater not get into a field of 16? If it’s a matter of TV and wanting personalities, there is no one with a more, or a better, personality then Pat. He deserves to make this show. And this show would be way better with him on it. This is obviously a case of someone with a personal problem with Pat. It’s a shame.
