2008 Saratoga Nathan’s contest a non-qualifier
Registration for the Nathan’s hot dog contest that will be held at the Saratoga horse racing track on August 18 is now open on IFOCE.com, which states that the contest will not be a qualifier for the 2009 finals, but the winner will receive a year’s supply of hot dogs.
In other IFOCE contest news, registration for the Los Angeles Nisei Week gyoza eating contest will open in about an hour. Sonya Thomas says she will not enter due to high travel costs (from comment)

I’m just shooting from the hip on this, but I think that if an event’s organizer(s) want an eater bad enough they will at least chip in and help defray travel costs, but I’m sure it depends on their budget, which, based on what I have read, is much less for this year’s competition than in 2006.
I think Joey and Rich will be there, and possibly Erik the Red. Beyond those three it will probably be locals. Who can afford round trip cross-country airfare anymore?
A wild card in all this would be Mr. Deep Dish. If he shows it could be very, very interesting between him and Joey. If somehow Sonya was able to make it, sparks would fly, and you’d have perhaps the most competitive event of the year among three or more eaters.

We got some extra sponsors so we’re good on budget. To help cover, I had to enter myself in the contest and take pledges, so we’ll see how I do. If I get 1/3 of Bertolletti’s total, I’ll be ecstatic.
The field will include MLE Eaters Pat Bertolletti, Rich LeFevre, Erik Denmark, Tim Brown, Kevin Ross, El Toro, and Shawn Kirby as well as actress Miki Mia (The waxer from 40-Year Old Virgin) and the 2007 Nisei Week Queen and Court competing for charity.

That’s great Cory, and nice to hear. If Joey’s not there, Pat will win for sure, with Rich a respectable second. Then it will be between Erik and Tim for third.
It’s unfortunate that Joey and/or Sonya won’t be there, but you’ve still got some of America’s best eaters. In Pat you’ve got the gunslinger of CE–the fastest in the west, as well as all other parts of the country. 🙂
