East Valley Tribune reports that Erik "The Red" Denmark will compete in the Nathan's qualifier at Arizona Mills in Tempe on June 11 along with Ryan McKillop, Ron Sirard, Brian Jacobson and Chiun "Jimmy" Peng. Michelle "Cardboard Shell" will headline the women's division.

McKillop and Peng are better then your average local, McKillop will put around 16-18 (if he can keep them down) and Peng might be good for 18-22…

Denmark really is the only legit eater and of course he will qualify…

two notes though, I really would like to see how many the cardboard shell will get down, I’m guessing 10-12… Also how does Peng seem to be one of the only guys who flys under the radar with MLE? He does multiple indy and MLE contest, has won money in both spectrums and yet is unranked and my guess is unsigned, yet they (MLE) still lets him into their contests…

Perhaps because Peng isn’t running his mouth on the internet constantly? He’s not a braggard. He doesn’t talk crap. He doesn’t narc on people. He just shows up and eats a lot of food.

why isnt stephanie torres ranked? They must have took a good look at her track record with challenges and said wait a minute this is a big gamble. Either that or they shoved a contract in her face and she said i dont think so

I agree with your post however, I think you missed my point. My question is, why is he allowed to do both indy and MLE contests while others who are less talented cannot? Not to mention there a lot of people in the top 50 who don’t run their mouths, narc, brag or talk crap. Just sayin

My guess is that 1 contest means that her ranking will come out after another event or two. You have to be living under a rock to not know how good she is. MLE seems to be aware of everything. If Denmark is beaten in Tempe it would be a surprise. However Peng has lost by a narrow margin to Denmark when compared head to head in at least one MLE event. So it isn’t completely “in the bag” in my opinion.

Denmark has always done really well in the major events like nathan’s and when crystal’s were around, he always seems to bring his “A” game for those events. This is gonna be a no contest. The only way Denmark doesn’t win is if he misses his flight or get’s DQ’d for whatever reason.

Cardboard Shell will be interesting. To my knowledge she hasn’t done any speed contests, but has done a couple 3 lb burger stack challenges in 6 minutes and change. If the magic with burger patties carries over to hot dogs… who knows.

Cutter, you know the ifoce rankings have nothing to do with ability or accomplishment.

Here is Peng’s eatfeats page with two top 3 IFOCE non-qualifier finishes. He might be the best IFOCE eater to never make the top 50.

Chava Cannon, who set a record for Chompie’s Jewish Slider challenge (23 minutes), might be another female possiblity

Calgary has been dropped as a qualifier 🙁
I’m sure none of you care, but I just thought I’d share

I do not agree with my grandpa. To say there is no correlation is obviously an exaggeration. To imply that there is little correlation is completely stupid. Grandpa, there’s a pretty strong correlation between ability/accomplishement and ranking. It might not be perfect, because the rankings do require an interpretation of results, but outside factors play very little role in the process. Quit being a crotchety, kooky old man, and come back down to Earth.

Nope, just a fan who dabbles in indy contests and spectates at some of the MLE events here and there.

    Ben Do,

Where did you here this bit of info?

if true does that open another wild card spot or possibly another qualifier somewhere else, anyone???

I had a spot in the Calgary qualifier, but the IFOCE emailed me today saying that it has been cancelled.

Where is the Shredder qualifying or is he qualifying af all?

  18. Nathan in Cali said

The cancelation of Calgary and with Bob competing in Cleveland is a very interesting turn of events. Now will Bob try to qualify elsewhere or just stick with holding the wild card, will the cancelation of Calgary open up a 2nd wilcard slot or will MLE host another qualifier elsewhere to make up for it?

We already know Philbin, Davekos, Gravy and Gordon are in for sure, Calgary out, Pat B and Bob in cleveland today that only leaves 8 qualifiers left. The shoe ins to compete who have yet to qualify are Janus (Fishkill maybe?), Denmark (Tempe), Booker (Queens) and Hunt (North Carolina).

So the way I figure it there are 4 qualifiers (assuming Bob keeps the wild card slot) wide open for eaters like Morgan, Osthoff, Conti, Goldstein, Reeves, Stonie and Collins to make Coney… Maybe/hopefully 5 if calgary gets replaced with another qualifier or wild card. Should be interesting to see how things pan out.

The IFOCE will find some way to get Goldstein & Conti to Coney. That you can take to the bank

We could see some shockers too What if Monson re-emerges from the darkness at Hawthorne 😮

  21. Nathan in Cali said

Yes Monson too, maybe that’s why we haven’t heard anything about the Hawthorne contest, maybe the IFOCE is keeping that info hush hush till it’s 100%, as he did skip out on Too Jay’s without notice to anybody.

I don’t care about the folks particular rankings… the point was that Peng is good and MLE doesn’t live under a rock, Steph will be up there if she continues to do contests. People have educated me that the rankings don’t necessarily correlate 100% to ability, I got that message months ago. Especially since different eaters often do better in certain foods than others there is no universal set of rankings for a particular food and rankings cannot predict the outcome of particular events because of politics, variance, and the fact that different people perform differently for different foods. For example when it comes to finesse and hand speed Pat and Sonya have demonstrated that they are the best.

IFOCE will do their best to get Conti in, Goldstein.. not too sure about.

As Matt Stonie has only done one more contest (two!) than Stephanie, AND signed a contract, I suspect that Steph is not ranked because she wouldn’t sign a contract. No contract, no appearance at Coney Island. I could always be wrong, though.

  25. Nathan in Cali said

    cutter,

Let me further educate you as you seem to be some what in the dark on this one… There really isn’t any mystery as to why Steph is not ranked it is simply because she didn’t sign the Shea’s contract, if she doesn’t do so by the 4th, you might not see her on the 4th, then again maybe you will, considering there hasn’t been any other females emerge that will make the female division look somewhat legit… My guess it everything is on standby on that decision.

Why Peng isn’t ranked/forced to sign is a mystery though, as MLE usually won’t let people compete who have had some success in their contests in without having them sign a contract.

Hey Mr. Seiken, why are you so interested if Shredder Goldstein does a Nathan’s qualifier? It’s obvious by his inactivity that he is losing interest in CE.
