update May 22 Jmann Review attended the contest and wrote a blog entry

3:09 The top 4
1) Pete Davekos 25
2T) Dan Coonan 11
2T) Robert O’Neil 11
4) Tim Michaud 10

Lauren Gallagher won the female division with 3 hot dogs.

2:00 Todd J Thomas reports that Pete Davekos ate 25 hot dogs, which should suffice for qualification with Badlands Booker’s absence. The woman standing next to Davekos appears happy with her performance. We will see if she broke 10 HDB.

update 1:50 Todd J Thomas has a picture of the contest which is underway now. There is at least one woman competing. Badlands Booker is not in the picture.

The contest should start at 1 pm eastern.

Happy with her 3 HDB performance and the MLE is proudly tweeting this crap? What an embarassing side show this league is becoming.

Yea, for him it was. I was there competing and I thought overall the heat as well as the fact the buns were really thick contributed to a really low scoring event. I finished roughly in 7th with about 5.5 hot dogs but the guys that finished ahead of me all had between 9-11 hot dogs.

Theres always an excuse for low numbers lol
I doubt and heat in boston today was that bad + buns are pretty universal, they all suck

This contest was open to anyone who wanted to sign up for it. So people shouldn’t complain that they feel it was an easy win. Show up and eat enough to win or shut up.
Who knows why Booker didn’t eat like he was scheduled to, but that is on him.
    Good Job Pretty Boy!

I am guessing that the low numbers can be explained with only 1 signed eater in the field. That said, I have a hard time getting to double digits myself. Dogs are not easy for me. I think we can appreciate the number of big bellies in the field in vegas. I believe there were at least 5 individuals with 18 or more. Since then we have seen a 16 and a few 11’s from non winners. Congrats to Pete, a win is a trip to CI and that is the deal. Nobody really knows for sure, maybe he had more in the tank if there was another signed eater present. But 25 is a good number anyway.

In all honesty, it truly does make a difference if you have no one to really compete with. Only makes sense that you wouldn’t push yourself as far. If there were other high-ranked eaters, Pretty Boy would have had to go further. Congrats to Pete!!!!!!!!

I agree with Cutter, PrettyBoy is a solid eater, but it is hard to “really” push your limits without your peers. 25 HotDogs is a nice number to head to Coney with…for his 4th consecutive year. Congrats!!

I agree with Cutter, the field in Vegas made this qualifier look like a joke. Adrian ate 27 and is not currently guaranteed a spot. His number is likely good enough to win the wild card and I know he is doing additional qualifiers, but either way he should be at the table!

How could not any other top 20 east coast eater (Conti, Shredder, Pat P.) not show up and put a little heat up Pete’s ass?? Any way, 25 is a respectable win. Nice job.

Wow this is incredible . I thought in order to qualify for female division you must eat 10 hot dogs and buns. Now its just stand at the table look pretty and half a dog and bun will get you a free bus ride to Coney on July 4th. This includes hotel accomodations along with an envelope filled with $100 or maybe 2 depending how good looking you are

As far as I could tell, there were no rules as to how many you could eat to qualify, in either the men’s or women’s divisions. The 10 HDB number was to get the trip (and I assume lodging, food and pre- and post- contest activities) paid for by MLE. Didn’t hit the 10 HDB threshold – you’re paying for your own trip to Coney.

Per the Women’s division announcement: “The male and female champions from each qualifier will earn a trip to compete in the ESPN televised finals at the original Nathan’s Famous in Coney Island on July Fourth, provided they eat no fewer than 10 hot dogs in competition.”

I didnt about the free trip based on the amt. I doubt some of these women that qualify would pay their own way deoending on how far they live from NY. If ESPN does not cover the womans event its pointless. It would amount to nothing more than a side show for personal home video

You can read the quote many ways, it is what isn’t said that anony is interpreting. I thought it meant that no woman would be eating on the 4th unless she ate, as they wrote, no fewer than ten. Yes, her way and all the fixings would come with that appearance but without eating ten, no matter what, the female finisher in any qualifier will not go to Coney. They might have to juggle things but they should stick to that rule. Otherwise the women’s division is just a bunch of who goes where, perhaps eye candy and a Sonya would be absolutely correct to want to compete with the men. If they do not have enough women who have eaten ten from the qualifiers, they can at least get some of the top eaters. They do not necessarily have to stick with the same numbers as the men. So far, how many women have qualified under the no less than 10, how many qualifiers are left? I love Larell, as you know, I know that she is in. Sonya, Juliet, someone else qualified already?

I was under the impression that in order to get to the table at Coney, women were required to eat at least 10 HBDs. I don’t think that under 10 HDB eaters are going to Coney, unless there’s a women’s wildcard, regardless if they pay their own way or not. Anyone???

SI, read above – “Lauren Gallagher won the female division with 3 hot dogs.” This is what the discussion is about. Two women have legitimately qualified with more than ten, Larell and Stephanie Torres.

I knew there was someone who qualified, 23 is impressive. As of now, that makes four, right? We know Sonya and Juliet are in. Larell, you do know that some of the eaters in the top 20 started out at 11 or 14, not sure but it would be easy to check. You can only get better with your attitude and what you can learn from other eaters. It seems that people who are enthusiastic and sincere can get other eaters interested in helping them. I am sure that you have met many. I am so psyched that there is a women’s division. I would imagine that they would televise at least some of it. You really chose, by chance, the absolutely best time to be a competitive female eater. What fun, goals, adventures, etc. Make a T-shirt Larell. If I were there, I would wear it proudly. Your face with your hair front and center, just a suggestion. I don’t know anything about Stephanie Torres, I have read about Juliet and Sonya, have been a longtime Sonya fan, now I am a big fan of yours.

Nunonabun2 – she should DEF do it again!!! Gr8 1st time effort for her! Stallion – yes, there are several top eaters who actually started with not-so-impressive debuts; which is mind-boggling AND inspirational to me! Thank you so much for the props; u have no idea how much that means to me. The people I’ve met in CE, eaters and fans, have been nothing but encouraging, motivational, helpful – just all-around the sweetest buncha people ya wanna know. I am having a complete blast doing this. I’m always asked, but if you don’t win these contests, what’s the sense of competing – I always tell them I do it for the fun, period! Haha, I’ve been saying I’ve never been soooo happy to be a female 🙂 In past years I thought how awesome it would be to eat at Coney Island on the 4th; NEVER in my wildest dreams imagining that it would happen!!! That is so funny that you mention a shirt….check out my Larell Marie “Real Deal” FB fan page – that’s exactly what my profile pic is. I’ve designed a t-shirt and now am trying to find sponsors who would be willing to foot the bill of the shirts in exchange for their company logo being displayed on the back of them. Yes, so far there’s only 2 women (myself & Stephanie) who have qualified with the mandatory 10+ dogs, making 4 women meeting the required minimum.

Women and men are equal in all aspects to men and should be expected to abide by the same rules. If a woman cannot do what the men do to qualify she has no business being a competitive eater.

    Why Cheapen c- eating?

As much as I applaud having a separate women’s division, it is really disappointing to have women qualify by eating what any hungry woman should be able to eat for lunch. Hell, I’m not a big woman, and if I were to skip a meal or two I can scarf down a measily five hot dogs in 10 minutes, and that’s with condiments and without dipping them in water.

And I’m not a big eater at all (except for broiled scallops and boiled cabbage).

If I couldn’t eat at least a dozen or so HDBs in 10 minutes, I would be embarrased to show my face at Nathan’s on July 4. Even 10 seems too few.

Talk about a slap in the face and a “cheapening” of the experience for all competitive eaters, men and women, that’s what you have.

Wait, wait, don’t tell me…………I agree fully with Rhonda but do we really know for sure that this will be the case? I am thinking that unfortunately, for this first year, it may well indeed be the case even though that isn’t what was hoped for, even by MLE. They are so seat of the pants anyway and didn’t put out any casting call etc. So we may have to be stuck with a partial joke for this year and that makes things cheapened for the four women who we know are more than legitimate. Maybe I should get into drag and go to a qualifier too, I could surely eat three. I never though about how many I could eat or tried but three is absolutely pitiful for anyone, even a kid I would think. It seems that the Sheas will do what they want anyway so no sense in us getting all wound up and trying to predict the outcomes. But how many qualifiers are left, Sonya is eating this coming weekend? Juliet? Grace Lee……..well, I think the real female eaters could contact their “sponsors”, MLE and ask for clarification. Larell, can you hear me now?

    ————-

I sure hope the sponsor is affliated with MLE or is non food/casino related if it isn’t… If it is and you show up to a contest with it on, don’t be suprised if George, Rich or Mike ask you to remove it (and I’m not about in a sexual advancement type of way either)… What I’m saying is don’t show up to a Subway contest with a “Mike’s Hoagie Sandwich Shop” logo on the back of your shirt, not a smart move…

from what I hear, Carboard shell is registered in Tempe, she has the chops for about 10-12HDB’s… I would also like to see Mrs LeFevre come out of retirement and show for either Tempe or Hawthorne… (I can understand why she didn’t want to compete in Vegas)…

You should get a tattoo shop to sponser you shirts Larell. Maybe get a animated hotdog done also to sweeten the deal.

I just wonder if they will give the ladies that win the local event a seat at the finals but just not pay for the trip. I guess someone would have to ask Mike or Shea’s to make that clear. I have a gal that can eat five or six and if Pi Gal doesnt show for Charlotte I was going to get her to enter. Hey VIP seating is good enough for this tag along table ender.

It’s not NASCAR, Larell. The business model is completely different. There’s a reason the other eaters don’t do what you’re thinking of doing, and it’s not because they haven’t thought of it .
