The entrants list for next month's Day-Lee Foods World Gyoza Eating Championship has been announced. Top 10 ranked competitors are Joey Chestnut, Matt Stonie, Bob Shoudt and Miki Sudo. "LA Beast" is listed, so apparently he has decided to unretire after announcing competitive eating was too small an arean for his talents on July 4.

    Joey and Miki should start planning their Tokyo-bound vacations.

    Joey will win this competition hands-down, given his gargantuan stomach capacity. I look for Matt, Miki, and Bob to finish second, third, and fourth, respectively. (Bob could finish in front of Miki, but I doubt it. She’s already better than he is, and she, like Matt, is still improving.)

    Rhonda — I hate to bring this up, but you can’t ignore the 10,000 pound elephant in the room. Knowing Miki Sudo’s background, even if it’s just for public relations reasons I’m pretty sure Malaysia Airlines isn’t going to be too thrilled about giving Sudo an international ticket to fly on their airline to Japan and back to the states. It may be one of those things where the airline says here’s the price of a ticket please feel free to fly on another carrier. In addition, I’m still not convinced Sudo isn’t on a no fly list due to her to the nature of her aviation-related felony. Sure, she may have gotten away with TSA or a carrier not doing proper background checks on her record to obtain recent domestic flights. But, I think once she started getting a little national attention, carriers and security officials began to make the connection on who she was. Besides, if she has a probation officer, I think he/she has last say on where she can and cannot travel.

You also don’t know homeland security restrictions which if Miki was on a no fly list, that would mean she can’t fly at all! You really think TSA would just allow miki to board a plane if she was on that list? It obvious she is not on the list and will be allowed to travel to anywhere of her choosing. Just because its domestic flights, doesn’t mean they don’t look at the no fly list when you go through screening. She takes full responsibility for what she did. She was found guilty and served her time. You may agree or disagree with the sentencing but that’s our justice system.     The actual charge and conviction is for providing misinformation. There’s nothing about a bomb threat in the charge or conviction. Miki is not (and never was) on a no-fly list. By the way you seem to enjoy fabricating stories, a misinformation charge would probably suit you very well.

    Wow — Miki Sudo is most likely not on TSA’s No Fly list. If being ignorant is not knowing how to read, maybe you should learn because I wrote “a no fly list.” U.S. Airway’s and other airlines that have codeshare agreements with them do have lists and may not let her fly due to her behavior — the right of any business to refuse services. Airlines are justified because Sudo’s behavior wasn’t just a “prank” as Miki’s friends try to pass it off as. Her malicious behavior was selfishly calling in a false bomb threat on Sept. 11 because her boyfriend wouldn’t pay for her ticket, which called for a felony conviction. Many and the media (see Las Vegas Sun) found her punishment to be an inappropriately light 10 months with probation. It doesn’t take a major investigation to figure that out. Just Google. Sudo is a problem for eaters, the MLE and its sponsors. Only an ignorant person doesn’t see that. Now if you want to continue to display your ignorance keep digging a hole.

Mr. Zimmerman was charged with 2nd degree murder, he was found not guilty. The link you posted was of the initial charges filed based on the Information the FBI received. The charges were eventually reduced by a plea deal to the charge of giving misinformation.

    The most important word in all of this is “plea deal”. And no matter how many people write about facts or not facts, the facts are that if you do Google Miki Sudo you will come up with some charges filed against her, and not light charges either. She made a plea deal meaning she did something, she wanted to avoid such and such a penalty. It was not a case of mistaken identity by a longshot. This is competitive eating with sponsors and a PR firm who created MLE. People’s perceptions count hugely. Miki Sudo is a liability for competitive eating, period, amen, end of story. Does everyone deserve a second chance? Yes. Does that second chance mean that the person can do whatever they want to distinguish themselves? No. No matter how talented Miki is, no matter how nice a person, no matter, no matter no matter, she is not good for competitive eating. Maybe the Sheas didn’t even realize who she was when she competed? Is that far fetched? Maybe. But it has been known to happen before.

    Plea deals can come about in different ways. The Prosecution has the burden of proof. They might have offered the plea deal to avoid the lengthy trail and risk miki going free without any penalty. Miki was smart to take the deal obviously because didn’t want to risk the maximum penalty (5 years in prison i believe) if the jury didn’t find her story convincing enough. That being said, i really doubt miki presence in CE will have much of a negative impact on the sport. I mean really, most people find the sport disgusting and I believe once people get to know who miki is, they will see the true person she is. A person who made a big mistake and is trying to move on. I really don’t see the big fuss about her competing. Of course, I believe the true motivation for this hateful comments about miki is purely out of jealously and can’t stand that fact that she is better then 98% of the eaters on here.

    It wasn’t a prank. She’s already addressed this in other forums. Sudo called to inquire about an unauthorized credit card charge. The conversation wasn’t going well and, where she probably should have given up and hung up, she made an offhanded remark that the call center CSR interpreted as threatening. Moral of the story: watch what you say. Don’t be sarcastic, don’t be a smartass, and don’t lose your temper with call center employees (cell phone companies, banks, whoever). The plane was already returning to the gate because of mechanical issues, but she’s really fucking sorry.

Whatever the backstory to Miki not participating in Nathans, he has made decisions about her being MLE going forward. He is Mr. PR and a business and his own person. He knows how to spin things and what might work or will work. And he has certainly taken into full account the sponsors and whatever Nathans itself might have as input. Maybe they decided that this wasn’t the year for her to debut at Nathans. Maybe not enough advance planning time for someone who would have all eyes on her as possibly unseating top eaters but the results of googling her name could have backbite.     I very rarely post on this website anymore because it has become a venue for ignorant low lifes to trash other people without having to reveal their true identities. Why don’t you just come out give your real names. I.D. please is obviously a despicable human being who most likely does not have a single person who likes him. You have to wonder what his motives are in his personal vendetta against Miki and why he is trying to influence others to keep her from competing.

    Carlene and I happen to know Miki very well and consider her to be an extremely nice person who is very remorseful for what she did three years ago. She has paid for her mistake many times over and is trying to live a normal, trouble free life. Anyone who has talked with her for any length of time knows that she is sincere and very humble. We really care about her and want everyone to give her a chance to show that she has a great deal to offer. She is a tremendous talent, obviously, but she is just as nice as she is talented.

    As for her being bad for MLE; that is a bunch of crap. She will be great for MLE as she is very well spoken and will be well liked when people see the true human being behind the talent. Anybody not willing to give her a chance to redeem herself is just someone who has nothing to offer.

    Great respect to Locust, a legend in CE and an outstanding and upstanding person. Personally, with comments, I have changed my mind about many things including Miki. It is good to see and read the respectful opinions. There are certainly good things about making people register but there are many problems as well. IMO the problem goes back to two important things which people may forget. The first is that no one knows who is behind eatfeats. I do not know the motivation for this site or what its real purpose is from the point of view of the person(s?) doing it. Until I know that for sure, I hesitate to give my full information. Of course that person has my IP address. But legally people are not supposed to share those. Problem 1. Problem 2 is linked to Problem 1. On most sites, newspapers, anywhere that people can comment, there are moderators. Surely not every comment posted gets printed though I have no way to be sure. OJ is the only person who can moderate comments. Again, if he chooses what to print, we still have no idea who is deciding. Of course we can not post, not read and go away. However, it is clear that many like Locust and many others do read regularly and maybe post rarely. The solution is not what Locust suggests though. The main problem with people having to register and always comment as themselves is that history has shown that personal attacks are made anyway. The few people who make these attacks also register under many alias names. No solutions here. I know some eaters who never come here or even read. What eatfeats does offer is it is one of the very places where people can come and read about competitive eating and comment.

    Of the two postings, I discount Facebook only because Facebook is not “permanent”. However, the posting in the newspaper is highly significant. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

    Everyone is entitled to their own wrong opinion. This forum is a perfect example of that. As a fan of Competitive Eating, it irritates me that a forum like this can get derailed about stupid discussions over things other than how much people ate in a contest and hyping up the next contest. You all need a lesson in ignoring troll posts that would derail relevant discussion.

    That being said, I am eagerly anticipating the Hooters Contest as well as the Gyoza contest. At Hooters, I think Miki will take the crown, perhaps even breaking her record. In Gyoza I think it will be a close match between Matt, Miki, and Joey. I have been a Joey fan ever since he was a rookie, but I find it refreshing that people like Matt and Miki are giving him a run for his money, especially now that Pat B has left the circuit.

    CE Fan is entitled to his opinion but to say others are wrong is just plain wrong. An opinion is an opinion. By this logic, the only thing to be considered is how much a person can eat. So a number one eater can do anything in their personal life but be promoted. This is foolish thinking. No one lives in this way outside of societal norms and recognition. People on the stage of competitive eating become public figures and are subject to public scrutiny. That includes every eater in MLE. They are publicly recognized. This is my opinion, right or wrong.     Let the public scrutiny begin after they have gotten to know a lot more about her. You just can’t go by a single incident from three years ago to make an accurate judgment of a person’s character. Most people can see whether or not a person is sincere in what they say (except in the case of some juries). I’m sure a lot of people would be pleasantly surprised to find that she has so much goodness in her.

Again though, just like 11:53 said, highlighting this problem probably does make it worse, at least on here. But people here care about competitive eating (and too often about only themselves and their jealousies). Miki may well be a wonderful person, but regardless of what is said here, she is going to be looked at carefully. Nothing to be done about that.

I know Miki well enough to pass judgement on her as Carlene and I have spent several hours together with her and know that she has deep regret for what she did and wishes with all her heart she had handled things differently on that fateful day (which, by complete coincidence, happened to be 9/11). Nobody can change the past, but anyone with a heart will forgive someone who has paid her debt to society and wants to be given the chance to live a productive life and prove that she is not this person some are portraying her to be. People who continue to villify her without knowing her personally are just ignorant fools with tunnel vision.

Top eaters are regularly in the national media, and if Miki achieves that level they will be confronted with several difficult scenarios. Let’s be hypothetical and say Miki won Nathan’s. Here’s what I’m asking, please give us how you would respond if you were the top male competitor when asked the following questions by Good Morning America: “We understand that the Woman’s hot dog eating champion was convicted of calling in a bomb threat to an airline on 9/11 anniversay. How do you think the families of the victims of 9/11 feel that on the nation’s birthday the a top competitive eater tried to close down the nation’s airspace on a 9/11 anniversary.     Well, I think Locust Fan’s question has been asked already and answered by Locust. On the one hand, Locust feels that those who will not give someone another chance (which he feels she fully deserves and from personal experience) are ignorant fools with tunnel vision, in Locust’s words. Locust Fan is posing a possible scenario of the future, one which seems not at all far fetched. My guess is that it would be very very hard for MLE to spin a positive from the notoriety Miki received from her action, whether deserved or not. I just cannot see MLE doing a PR for Nathans and July 4th and 9/11 which says everyone deserves another chance, it is the good old USA and democracy. That may be true in many cases but in this one in particular, that is hard to imagine. I could be wrong, of course and time will tell. You still have to ask why Miki did not compete on the 4th this year and why MLE is touting her for Hooters. There is already backlash in Florida as reported by OJ. That should be a clue about people’s perceptions and how things might go for the future. If MLE thought this would just go away after the 4th, so far it has not.

    @1:57 – such a reporter would be hideously mistaken, as Sudo was NOT convicted of “calling in a bomb threat”. The media can sensationalize it and spin it how they like, but the actual charge is MISINFORMATION. Sudo has also made it clear that it was NOT a prank; she was NOT “trying” to disrupt operations, but rather calling about an unauthorized charge on her credit card. She obviously didn’t book the flight, so that it fell on any particular day is a terrible coincidence. Finally, the plane was already delayed and already heading back to the gate for mechanical issues, before anything was reported. It doesn’t make it right, she’s still an idiot, but get your facts straight if you’re going to behead someone.

    WIP and Wingbowl are all about marketing. The Wingbowl’s a sham and not exactly the best example citizenship. Why is it do you think Angelo told El Wingador to stay home? He wasn’t even convicted of a crime. Remember, Angelo’s in the media, he knows a thing or two. I know, I know, drug dealing and calling in a bomb threat are two different crimes. But they both affect people and there are innocent victims. Maybe not unfortunate families of drug users, but 9/11 victims families may have been a little shaken when they saw “Plane being scanned for bomb” comming across the CNN crawl. Also, how about Mrs. So and So who was on that flight and wasn’t able to see her grandaughter’s birthday, hey let’s get her on camera. So, to say you have to get to know her personally isn’t going to work. Not many people know top eaters personally. They only know of an eater’s abilites and backstories as told by the media. In Sudo’s case, the backstory is not so great.

    I would say it was a foolish act made without giving any thought to the consequences or the victims of 9/11. If she had analyzed it beforehand instead of acting on pure emotion, she would have seen the bigger picture and come up with a much better way of handling her anger. Nobody can approve of the act itself, but it was not made with malicious intent and the date just happened to fall on the one day of the year so many people suffered great losses due to the pre planned attack by the 12 terrorists. She just acted without thinking, and if given the opportunity to make a public statement, would surely offer a sincere apology to anyone and everyone who was inconvenienced or deeply offended by her actions. I would suspect that most would understand the situation and be willing to forgive her. Like I said before, most people are intelligent enough to read how sincere a person is when they hear directly from that person. A heartfelt statement and apology are needed to put this horrible episode of her life in the past.

    I would also say that I know Miki well and that she has a good heart and is devastated by what she did in a moment of rage. I have great respect for the way she has handled herself since and she deserves the chance to show everyone exactly who she is. People should judge her on what they see in the future; not by what happened three years ago.

If Miki really wanted to be a top eater, she should hire her own publicist who would help her craft a possible public statement and huge apology, make her story into something people might even be able to relate to. That is simply incredibly naive. Miki is like Monica Lewinsky. If she wanted to get on with her life, she chose too high profile a way to do it under all circumstances no matter her talent. It is truly a shame if she indeed could catch The Black Widow and Joey and others, but whether you call circumstance, immaturity, whatever you may call it, she is not a good “product” for competitive eating or any other super high profile anything. Maybe she could convince someone to write a script and make a movie about her story, but competitive eating, July 4th, product sponsorship, this is pretty crazy imo. The Sheas may not be stupid, not at all, but I for one really want to see how they are going to handle all of this. They may have made a dumb error to begin with by not vetting her at some contest or other and then had and have a nightmare public relations problem on their plates.

    Miki wants to make a public statement but has to adhere to how MLE wants to handle the situation. It is just my opinion that a heartfelt apology would be the best solution for all parties. Rich and George probably agree that the problem will not go away by itself; that at some point she will have to be allowed to express her feelings. It’s just a matter of when the best time would be to do so. They have a much higher stake in this and their expertise and experience in public relations will hopefully pay off for Miki and anyone who cares about competitive eating or giving a human being a chance to redeem herself. It would be a real tragedy if she isn’t given the chance to move forward with her life.

    Drumstick – If you cannot take a qualifier at face value, then it has no value and should therefore have no bearing on whether a competitor has earned a spot in the finals or not. Is it an exact science? Of course not, as no two chicken wings are made alike, but it is as good as anything. Anywho, we all know that a lot can happen with the competitors between now and then, and that is the other x-factor. Regardless, I look forward to an entertaining bout. I will be cheering on my favorites (Mike, Joey, and Shell). Do I think we will see something happen like what happened at Chicago Ribfest? I think so.

    Chestnut and Thomas are the two best wing eaters in MLE. At Wingstop two years ago they demonstrated just that, yet according to the judging, or lack thereof, Bertoletti and BOB were awarded first and second place money. It was some crooked shit. Ask BOB if he really thinks he ate more than Jaws and TBW. He won’t complain about the judging when it’s in his favor, but he knows.

    You should probably check yourself 308. They’ve been ‘checking the cups’ in Buffalo since 2002 when they started the event, and TBW has won at least five times. She also won a wing bowl. She also won two hooters qualifiers. She also won a Verizon voice wing qualifier. I don’t think they missed the cups in those nine wing victories. I think you are a piss poor judge of character.
