Three wild card spots per gender will be awarded to the top non-qualifying competitors based on their performance at the six 2023 qualifiers.
All competitors must hit a minimum hot dog & bun quantity in their qualifier in order to have travel to be covered – 20 HDB for men ; 10 HDB for women.

And of course MLE would have a minimum HDB count to cover travel–they have some of the tightest pockets around! Have they done this in past years…required eaters have achieved a minimum HDB count in order to cover their travel/lodging for Coney?

Yes, there has been a minimum in past years, but obviously none of the male competitors needed to worry about that. Unless the wild card numbers increase at the D.C. qualifier, that may be a problem.
Of course, MLE could always relax that, especially for the women’s competition, otherwise it will be a fairly empty table.
Mary Bowers barely made 10 in her previous qualifiers, and only 10 once at the finals, and she’s getting a international bye.

I think the 20 / 10 hot dog requirement for travel expenses has been around since at least the start of the women’s division and it applies to qualifier winners as well as wild cards.
The only contests Sarah and Juan Rodriguez have done in the 2020s are the 2021 and 2022 Nathan’s finals, which they received byes for. We will see who competes in Washington Saturday.
Mary Bowers has not done any MLE contests at all in the 2020s and got rewarded with a bye.
Tiktok star Gal Akbari from Canada could have been another possibility for a women’s international bye. There has never been an Arab or Muslim in the women’s Nathan’s finals. https://www.tiktok.com/@q.gal

To be fair, all of the international byes on the men’s side eat well enough to finish at the top #1 or #2 at each of the
qualifiers, and other than Adam Moran, all of them are close to or above 40 hot dogs as their PRs. I’d rather see more good eaters on the fourth than have a bunch of sub-par wild card invitees make it to Coney and eat less than 27 or 28. The women’s side is such a gap between the top places and the rest that I really don’t care how they determine who gets a “bye”.

You want to talk about obsession?!?!? The guy who wrote those half-truths, probably Brian S. (BB) is so jealous of my musical talent he’s still obsessed & talking about what I did 15-20 years ago. He probably goes to sleep at night with his hand on his dick thinking about me. For the record, I was arrested & spent 8 & a half months in jail for sending an e-mail which was in violation of an order of protection. If you want to call it stalking go ahead. Miki Sudo was indicted in May on one count of intentionally conveying false and misleading information. She pleaded guilty Tuesday.”
According to the indictment, Sudo alleged her boyfriend, a passenger on US Airways Flight 399 from Las Vegas to Phoenix, was going to “blow up the plane.”
About 10 minutes after the flight left McCarran International Airport, the pilot reported a mechanical problem.
According to the defendant’s plea memorandum, “Sudo admits that she made the statement about her boyfriend intending to blow up the plane because she was mad at him because he had not paid her for the ticket and that he had not expressed any intention of blowing up the plane.”

Yea, but it’s not like she’s just “coasting” to victory, she been pushing her all time PR higher and higher. There’s really only one US female eater that I can think of that can eat more than 36/37 HDBs right now. And we all know that head to match-up won’t be happening any time soon. Not sure if there’s any international female eaters that could threaten the 40+ mark.
Sudo was naturally gifted with an insane capacity from Day 1. Anybody that can complete a 12 lb. pho challenge with absolutely zero training as their first food challenge is in the top 0.001% of population in terms of god-given capacity. So I don’t personally think she’s had to work as hard to grow to become the eater that she is today. I could be wrong though. Maybe she has a crazy work ethic and training regime that most ppl don’t know about

Miki is the most incredible, awesome, talented peoples champion. She is a role model for all athletes worldwide. I’m proud of her and so should all of America as she represents the United States as the Nathan’s female champ. I have the deepest respect for her accomplishments in the mostly male dominated world of competitive eating.
