This is crazy . They haven’t even aired eats of strength yet and we have a new grilled cheese champ . I guess they will have to add a caption when the show airs that reads New record established by Joey Chestnut on June 10. They could have at least waited to break the record after the show aired in July.

My performance in hotdogs reflects the months hard work I have put into training for Coney Island. I have had almost no chance to train for grilled cheese, so I do not expect to perform nearly as well this weekend. I do expect it to be a close contest

I WOULDN’T BELIEVE A WORD HE SAYS FROM NOW ON

I just got finished viewing the video of the grilled cheese contest on the 10th, and despite being very impressed with my younger brother’s performance, I was very dissapointed with something I saw. If you view the tape, you will see one of the competitors consume an entire sandwich after the time had expired. This is something that I saw while I was in Stockton watching the Asparagas eating contest as well. While I would like to think these were just isolated events and that this would not happen again, this needs to be addressed and someone needs to say something.

I am very proud of not just my brother, but of all the competitors. What they do is very difficult and is often criticized by many people. Being that I have competed in this activity and that my brother is one of the top ranked eaters, I often find myself defending all of the competitors and what they are doing. I hope very much that does not occur again, and that the integrity of the sport’s competitors will not be compromised any further.

Paul wake up and smell the coffee . The stuff you mention about eating after the bell goes on all the time. You just happened to pick up on it. Inflated totals from eaters is nothing new in the IFOCE since its incepetion. For example : At the meatball contest two years ago one of the eaters was flinging meatballs from the 5lb tray into the nearby 2 lb tray to make it seem like he consumed more.

  13. Mega Munch said

    June 12, 2006 @ 8:20 am

Good point Paul. Sadly, I’d be willing to bet it happens more often than you’d think. When time expires, what can they do to prevent this from happening? Maybe have one judge per eater? It could be someone recruited immediately before the contest from the audience (you’d find no shortage of willing participants, I’m sure).

Or, when the countdown ends, all eaters must immediately put their hands in the air (not COPS in the air, just above their shoulders) and step away from the table. Nothing too extreme. It might actually be cool to see a dozen eaters suddenly stop stuffing their face, put up their hands and step away in unison. Plus it seems like one of those overly dramatic rules that the IFOCE loves so well.

    June 12, 2006 @ 9:39 am

Loner – have you ever believed anything he has said? In anything the people on top are very coy and they don’t give away anything that could in some way jeopardize their standing.

  15. Yo Mama said

    June 12, 2006 @ 11:10 am

Yes, Paul, it is clear that one of the competitors kept stuffing after the time had expired. The ‘rule’ says whatever is in the mouth counts as long as the competitor gets it down in a timely manner I think. It does not address where in the mouth area. So technically I guess Sonya was abiding by the rule. On the video she seemed to have part of the sandwich in her mouth as time expired but she had to keep stuffing after so the whole thing went in. It’s not like she had torn the sandwich in half and was stuffing in the other half after time expired. It was one complete unit that she kept stuffing. Maybe the rule should be clarified, or changed so it says no use of the hands after time expires.

I dont think anyone should retire, certainly not one of the greatest eaters in the world. And to the “Loner”, as for Joey saying that he expected the contest to be close, he was being serious. Just over a month ago he and Sonya tied in a contest, and he had every reason to believe that it could happen again. As for eating after time has expired, I think anything inside the mouth is acceptable. But any food/debris on the outside of the mouth needs to be cleaned off and put back on the plate to be weighed.

Whoa whoa Gentleman Joe, I most certainly did not accuse her of cheating. I said

“So technically I guess Sonya was abiding by the rule”

That’s not accusing. That’s saying she followed the rule. The rule doesn’t specifically address what she did. Paul and others do not like what she did, but the rule doesn’t outlaw it. IFOCE should clarify the rule in that regard.

Wyatt Earp is not my alias, as I do not have nor do I need one. My assumption is that Wyatt Earp is most likely just an educated fan of the sport who noticed that I was also an eater. Sorry to dissapoint The Loner.

As for “cheating”, I dont believe I used that word. However, I did use the word integrity. I think the rules need to be re-stated and enforced. Until that happens though, eaters might just continue to eat as they please, with a complete lack of respect for the other eaters. In this event, Joey still managed to win by 10. But that extra sandwich cost Pat Bertoletti sole possession 2nd place!!! I doubt Pat liked what he saw when he viewed the replay of the competition!

Whats up Wyatt Earp? Good to see I have a fan.

I too was at the Stockton asparagus festival, and the amount Sonya had hanging out of her mouth was ridiculous. She had to hold the food in with her mouth so that it wouldn’t fall out. I am not doubting her abilities or calling her a cheater, but I agree with Paul, the rules must be made clearer so that there is no dispute or controversy after a contest. And as for Paul as an eater, I was able to witness him eat chili fries in Long Beach, and I think he has some potential. If he wouldn’t have stopped halfway through to cheer on his brother, he could’ve definitely placed higher. And I have yet to see a comment from Rhonda. First she doesn’t think Joey can push 40 HDBs. Then when he hits 50, she says he can only improve on one thing at a time and talks about how he still gets beaten by Sonya. What do you have to say for yourself now? You’ve been wrapped up in the sugar business for so long, you’ve forgotten the taste of real honey! Sonya’s got sugar, but nothin’ beats honey.

For Lucky Luciano and Paul Chestnut,

Hey Lucky, I’m sure that’s an appropriate name somehow, apparently you’ve missed some of my posts. No doubt, Joey has it going on when it comes to sandwich-type foods like hot dogs, hamburgers (except for really large ones like the Barrick Burger), etc. But he is not yet even in the same league as proven performers like Ed “Cookie” Jarvis, Eric “Badlands” Booker, or Sonya Thomas. Just look at all the different kinds of foods these folks have records in. Especially Sonya!. (The last big event I saw on national television was Joey getting his ass kicked by one Sam Vise!) Time will test the youngster’s mettle. You don’t prove yourself in this sport in a year or so, or by excelling in a couple of different types of foods.

And as good as Joey is in these sandwich type foods, there is no way in hell that Koby will lose to him. Again, I’m as American as the next person, but Koby will toy with Joey for the first 9 minutes or so, and then Koby’s much greater stomach capacity will spell Jaws’ demise. I’m more worried for Joey reversing on National television, which would likely spell doom for this “sport” as we know it. That would screw it up for everybody, and the sport would wallow in his vomitus for years to come. The kid’s already had one reversal, from what I read on BB’s site a few months ago. Kobayashi’s presence may exacerbate that situation, especially in a 12-minute contest

And Paul (Chestnut) and Lucky: who in the hell do you two think you are accusing people of cheating and making ridiculous accusations towards truly great eaters when you haven’t a damned clue about what the hell you’re talking about? (That turnip truck you two just fell off of is not far down the road. I hope it doesn’t hit you both on its return trip!)

Paul, I’ve been watching competitive eating for half as many years as you’ve been alive. Yet you seem to be a self-proclaimed authority on rules of the sport, trying to take advantage of your brother’s recent success. I’ve much respect for Joey; you’re doing him no favors when you open your mouth. Save it for eating, as you need all the help you can get.

Will you be talking the same shit during Joey’s down times? You should feel lucky just to be present at the same table as some of the sport’s longtime greats. You’re in no position to be condescending towards any eater, let alone the great ones! Do your brother a favor and keep your mouth shut.

I will stand by my prediction that Joey Chestnut will not be able to take Kobe this year. Maybe next year or the year after but not this year. Kobe knows how to handle his fiercest competition no matter who it may be. Japanese refuse to lose. I would love to see an american take back the title and i hope i am proven wrong. Rufus, fortunately, the idiots on this site who are badmouthing Sonya and others, do not reflect the comraderie inherent throughout the IFOCE. You have to remember, this site is a haven for those who talk shit and can’t back it up. Yeah I’m being blunt today. Those who can and do back it up don’t come here.

There’s a reason why you don’t routinely see comments by any of the top eaters. Just as Andrew has pointed out, they do their talking at the table. They realize that when you respond to shallow comments like some of the ones on this particular thread, you lower yourself to the level of the person making those remarks.

However, I do believe that most of the top eaters visit this site occasionally and read some of the posts. I surely don’t think that Sonya would take to heart anything said here that sounds ridiculous. She and other top eaters are well above that, and are smart enough to consider the source.

I sure would like to see folks move on from here. I agree with Anonymous. Enough is enough.

    To anonymous,

I agree that chipmunking can be important.

But, Chipmunking is in the mouth, not outside of it.

I can comment, i’ve competed in ifoce contests, aice events, many independent events & helped to run &/or judge a few. I can tell you how Rich Shea invented rules as he went along in a Nathan’s qualifier in L.A. a few yrs back. I’ve been in other events that you had to spit out the contents in your mouth at the buzzer (weighed) frankly that makes the most sense to me. That way, you’re not waiting forever for the eaters to down whats left, less chance of reversal, & you can speak w/ the press immeadiately.

Btw – Mega & P. Chestnut may have gone out of their way to not actually say cheating, their implication seems similar to the claim that a hummer or a hand job isn’t cheating either.

While there may not be a rule regarding it, outside the mouth “chipmunking” is wrong. No matter who does it.

Wow, I had no idea that my post would generate so many responses. Once again, I have not accused anyone of cheating. I apologize to anyone who I might have offended through my concerns about “chipmunking”, but I feel they are valid concerns. I know that I am very new to this activity, nor do I claim to be an authority on it. But I am not the only person who believes that the food should at least be close to inside the mouth, and not plainly hanging out of it.

Rhonda, and anyone else who I offended, I have nothing but the utmost respect for Sonya Thomas. WHAT SHE DOES IS AMAZING!!! And the fact that she does this all while being less than half the size of the other eaters makes it even more amazing. If you had any idea about the amount of respect my family and I have for Sonya and the other eaters, you might have never said what you did. I know that Joey doesn’t have nearly as many records as Booker, Jarvis, Thomas, or Kobayashi. But that might have something to do with the fact that he has only been competing for just over a year, and is significantly younger than them.

Rhonda, to answer your question, YES!!! I will always be there for my brother during the down times. What the hell kind of question is that? If you had any idea how close we are, you would pull your head out of your ass, clean off the shit, and realize that you had no right to ask such a question!!! I have witnessed Joey lose on many occasions, and each time he showed nothing but class and respect for those who beat him.(This is more than I can say for you!!!)

To everyone, I am truly sorry if I offended anyone, it was not my intent. I dont think Sonya should retire or join the AICE. She is a great asset to the sport and perhaps the biggest drawing card in the country. If anyone feels need to debate over this matter any further, I will be happy to do so in person at Coney Island. I will be easy to find, as I will not be hiding under some goofy alias.

Oh, sorry Phil, I could’ve sworn we were having a heated discussion about Sonya’s questionable post-buzzer eating practices.

Look, I stand by that statement too. Like baseball, competitive eating is a sport of statistics, which means if you ain’t got ’em, you ain’t gettin’ headlines. Or, if you don’t have stats, you at least have to be making some waves. Does Sports Illustrated put the rookie, bench-riding catcher from San Diego Padres on its cover and devote a 3,000 word feature story to him? No.

So tell whoever it is your trying to get attention for to keep practicing and working hard and one day, when they REDEFINE THE PHYSICAL BOUNDARIES OF THE HUMAN BODY like Joey and Sonya and Koby do on a regular basis…we’ll give ’em some lip service.

Whoa whoa! What is up with all the hostility? Nobody ever used the word CHEAT!!! and might I add, Paul never mentioned Sonya’s name in his entry, but somehow, everyone knew thats who he was talking about. Coincidence? I think not. Everyone has witnessed this technique in almost every event, and not just from Sonya. All I was asking for was for clearer rules on shoving food into your face after the contest is over. As i think most people would agree with me, that is not fair. I too, along with everybody else on this site, believe Sonya is incredible, but in a situation where “chipmunking” might cost someone else their rightful spot, like, i don’t know, PAT BERTOLETTI!! something needs to be done. Second place was Pat’s all the way, no matter how you put it, the video won’t lie. Pork ribs, jalepeno poppers, chicken wings, and waffles: these are all foods that Joey holds records in, none of those foods are “sandwich type” And of course Badlands, Jarvis, and Sonya have more records, they go to more events than he does. Events sanctioned mostly on the east coast, far from Joey’s California residence. You can’t critisize Joey for not having records in foods that he hasn’t even eaten in before. However, if Joey was to eat in those competitions, there is no doubt in my mind that he would erase all the records from the board and set new ones. Rhonda, take your face out of the carpet it’s stuck in, and don’t put words in other people’s mouths.

One should note that using correct spelling and grammar in posts makes one’s points more relevant. Otherwise, misspelled words and poor grammar make one look ignorant and discount any point being made. We have spell check on all computers, use it.

Mrs. Jones, I couldn’t agree with you more. However, I think perhaps you may need to loosen a bra strap. I’d be glad to help you with that, because those things can be so difficult at times.

By the way, do you remember that song from 1973 by Billy Paul called “Me and Mrs. Jones?” Takes me back. I mean it takes me back (complete sentence).

I just hope Miss Manners doesn’t see this post. Then again, three may not be a crowd after all.

Mrs. Jones does not wear a bra. However, I have seen her reading some torn out pages from an old Miss Manner’s book hidden in her manga. She wants me to get a perm, but I think the chlorine from the pool would ruin the the ‘do.
