AICE Reuben sandwich preview
The Battle Creek Enquirer has a preview of Saturday’s Reuben sandwich eating contest. Some of the expected entrants are:
Among those who will be competing are “Gentleman” Joe Menchetti of Wallingford, Connecticut, Pat “Dr. Delicious” Bruss of Cincinnati, Ohio and Chris “The American” Schlesinger from Bohemia, New York. “Gentleman” Joe Menchetti is considered by some to be the best money eater in the country.

Boy do I wish I had the luxury of being a ranked IFOCE eater while doing AICE events. Could the Sheas be easing the rules or just applying them to whomever might hurt them? Maybe the Sheas and Chapman have kissed and made up? Nevermind, that won’t happen.

Pat Bruss is that guy in college who somehow dated two or three girls at the same time. I could never figure out how he pulled that off.

I believe that he qualified before his comeback to the IFOCE and this is just saying that he’s scheduled to attend being he qualified. This doesn’t mean that he’ll be in attendance.

nathan, I think your status in the IFOCE, along with your performances, would go against the amatuer requirement for the BYB competitions. But hey, put on some sunglasses, and call yourself Ethan Biller, and nobody would figure it out!

Maybe this will lead to an easing of the “restaurant challenges” ban. Soon ranked eaters will be able to eat oversized menu items like Denny’s Ye Old 96er, 20-piece chicken nuggets, and triple Whoppers with cheese.

Well we would have to think about why there is a ban on such events, before speculating whether or not they might go away. Mainly, it gives the restaurant publicity without paying for it. If eaters were allowed to do this on a regular basis, instead of financing the eating competitions, restaurants will simply put a big burger on the menu and still get the same publicity. This means no money for the Sheas, which means no food challenges for the eaters.

It’s a catch 22, Carey.
Most of the restaurants with these banned oversized menu items could never afford to host an officially sanctioned MLE event. Even if they could afford it, from a marketing perspective it wouldn’t do them much good because the restaurants (say Denny’s or Clinton Station Diner) have a relatively focused customer bases and don’t always need the wide publicity that an MLE event brings (they’re not chain restaurants like Krystal or Nathan’s).
To be honest, I don’t think the restaurants care if Tim Brown or Jason Erb are banned from eating their big menu items. Even without the occasional “professional” eater appearance, the small restarants will still net some word of mouth buzz (the most important kind of publicity) simply by having the giant burger or pizza. Amateurs or groups of amatuers will still attempt the challenge or complete the challenge and that will get the restuarant some publicity. The only real losers in this scenario of the handful of our nation’s most dedicated eaters who are forbidden to make the attempt in the first place.

ILKRAPB, this is the section of the IFOCE contract that deals with it.
[performer agrees to participate solely and exclusively in organized competitive eating events, exhibitions and appearances of any kind in the media related to eating (collectively “Eating Eventsâ€) Which are sanctioned and approved by the IFOCE]
however, there is a clause allowing performance with prior consent from the IFOCE
[Performer shall notify IFOCE in advance of competing or appearing in any eating events not sanctioned by the IFOCE and must obtain IFOCE’s permission prior in order to participate or appear]

Dave, you are thinking about the restaurant’s side of this. The problem isn’t with what they gain or lose, it is what the Federation will lose if it allows eaters to compete. Jim’s got alot of publicity, I mean weeks of tv news coverage when Bob beat that kid’s steak record. Jim’s steaks could easily fund a competition, given the profits gained after the publicity. They don’t need to now. They got what they were looking for.
This argument may not hold much water, but it doesn’t have to prove out, it is still a possibility, which is enough to make someone with a vested interest go to great lengths not to find out if it is valid or not.
