from that blog:
They held the world gyoza eating championship. Steamed dumplings. The winner got $2500. I guess there’s this whole league of professional eaters. They all knew each other and fly around…eating. The people who came in 2nd and 3rd ate 10 percent of their body weight in 10 minutes!!! f***ing incredible. The winner was a bit larger though. You might think that chick wouldn’t do so well, but she came in 2nd. They had all these strategies like covering their mouth so air wouldn’t get in and dipping them in water to help them slide down, and they’d hop around a bit to settle it and get out any burps. Some amatuers competed along with the pros, I mean some fat ass dudes. They amatuers ate like 40 or so (I’ve eaten maybe 24 and I’m stuffed). The record they set was 162 if I remember correctly.

Don’t think the #s are correct. I believe both Joey and Sonya ate over 200 and Joey won by 2 or 3 dumplings. Not sure about any other totals. Previous record is dust.

I heard Joey ate 212 and Sonya did 210, LeFevre 3rd ?? and Hall Hunt 100??++ for 4th place. Unfortunetly, El Toro had to take on a different role, due to difficulty trying to get the horns up. I’m sure stories are to follow. I also heard from a spectator that if the contest lasted a minute or 2 longer, Sonya may have won it because she was making a fierce comeback. Once again, itd just what I heard, I was at home.

I cn’t seem to link to it properly. If you click on the link below, then in the Photo Galleris on the right, click on State Fair Saturday’s Events, there are several pictures from the Chowdown contest.

This is truly amazing . The numbers from Chestnut & Sonya are beyond belief. In June 2003 IFOCE held the last dumpling contest in NYC chinatown. Ed Jarvis introduced his new protege to the stage Allen Goldstein. The contest was 8 min and they gave us 10 to a plate. I ate about 61 and Jarvis won with 91. The dumplings appeared to be basically the same size as the ones in this contest. Chestnut & Sonya put the old dumpling record to shame . You are going to get people coming out of the woodwork that were in the 2003 contest claiming this contest was 10 instead of 8. Everyone in the 2003 contest was stuffed to the max. They couldnt put down another dumpling if they tried so i dont know if another 2 min would have meant anything. I was there so i know. Hall Hunt actually broke the 2003 record first with 107 yesterday if you want to get technical.

Results for top 5 and El Toro were:
1.Joey 212 $2500
2.Sonya 210 $1500
3.Rich 162 $750
4.Hall 106 $250
5.Erik(me) 94
?.El Toro 58
The IFOCE had quite an extensive writeup on their site (sorry Hall, don’t mean to take that one away that they gave you but 106 was your total, right?). Hopefully they add more because Joey, Sonya, and Rich all put huge numbers. The Gyoza was fast and I knew this would probably be a capacity contest. With each Gyoza weighing about .9 oz both Joey and Sonya ate close to 12 lbs. in 10 minutes and Rich ate about 10 lbs.
I think the prize money breakout was lame, with $5000 on the line they should payout the top 5 at least in my opinion and I don’t say that because I finished 5th. In fact I am happy that Hall got at least something for travelling all the way across the country and driving 6 hours to get to the competition.

Is that Gatorade/sports drink in the two cups of coloured liquid between Erik and Joey. Since I do not know who is left or right handed I do not know who they belong to. Note: A clear liquid could still have sugar added. An eater could eaten sugar cubes/”Starbucks” packets or candy just before coming onto the stage.
In an earlier thread at
http://eatfeats.com/waffle-house-championship-in-atlanta-sept-3.html
No eater responded about raised body blood-sugar levels which open up the small circular opening between stomach and the small intestine to allow more food to be eaten. Food would enter the small intestine clearing the stomach above. I am guessing this trojan horse is true and no one wants to reveal one of their trade/unmentionable secrets to amateurs.

The totals tallied by both Joey and Sonya are mind-boggling! And Rich’s total was absolutely amazing! The Locust deserves TONS of credit! If anyone had told me tbefore the contest that Rich was going to eat 162 dumplings, I wouldn’t have believed that person.
If there are still any doubters of Sonya Thomas’ current level of talent … they need professional help –and FAST! Sonya has shifted her game into overdrive and isn’t bullshittin’ around. It looks as if she’s on a mission.
And Joey deserves all the credit in the world. He certainly deserves to be ranked # 1 in the USA. And both Joey and Sonya are closer to Koby than any other pair of eaters in history.

Sonya really did put up some Gal Sone-like numbers. She’s one of the best female eaters today.
