Austinist has an interview with "Hungry" Todd Rungy about his television project which received funding through Kickstarter. Rungy describes Joey Chestnut as "not really like, a patriot, you know" who lacks personality. (Joey Chestnut did a tour of Pacific military bases with Adrian Morgan and Crazy Legs Conti last year and his brother served in the National Guard in Iraq.)

When he finally steps up to the table at a Nathan’s qualifier, and Bickels it, then we’ll know what kind of eater this poseur really is. Suzanne French, anyone? (crickets chirping) Anyone?
He just needs to go away.

I have worked with quite a few military people, virtually all of whom I’ve considered as patriots, and I’m not aware of a common denominator, personality-wise, except love of country.
Mr. Rungy may be hungry, but I doubt he has the appetite to digest even the bad taste in his mouth, let alone any amount of food worth mentioning.
If he keeps it up, his funding might be through Asskicker, instead of Kickstarter.

This guy needs to talk to Dale Boone. Since Suzy “Suzilla” doesn’t seem to be working out he can give Rungy the number four in the world ranking in his phoney league.

Oh Dear, this is really really…….no Will, this is not a gimmick, it is a gimme and seems as if the guy has been eating dumb and dumber food. He is quoted as saying that he thinks he can pick up where Joey Chestnut left off, Joey not being a patriot and all that? This is a big free country, anyone can blog, write articles, sometimes it looks the same but it absolutely is not. In saying what he said, he is dumping heavily on real patriots from people who risk their lives to their families and friends……well, it isn’t worth going on and on if you do not understand this. People gave money for this guy to make a film and a television series? Okay, it is a free country. Just boggles the mind.

@Hmmm – I’m saying the whole thing is a gimmick. It’s a work. The guy is playing a character and you’re all getting trolled by believing it.

@BigWill
The problem is competitve eating is such a small crowd that it’s hard to tell who’s being real and who’s playing a character/gimmick sometimes.

People have a choice in the gimmicks they choose, and most of the time reactions to them are fairly predictable. I don’t appreciate his “gimmick.” Even if he doesn’t really mean what he says I think he’s demonstrating poor judgement by saying what he does.
But in the scheme of things, it’s really small potatoes.
