Carnegie Deli pickle contest videos & results
BTrauman has uploaded videos of today’s pickle eating contest at the Carnegie Deli in its entirety. The results from that event:
1. Arnie Chapman
2. Mike Hoffman
3. Richard Leavy
4. Jill Stoler
update NY1 has a brief article about the contest
update #2 Jill Stoler has a blog entry about the contest. Jill emailed the original results and a picture of the scoresheet which can be viewed after the jump:
From Jill Stoler email:
Arnie Chapman 1.725 lbs
Mike Hoffman 1.435 lbs
Richard Levy 1.250 lbs
Jill Stoler 1.150 lbs
Mike Leyden 0.895 lbs
Craig Presto 0.815 lbs
Apolenar (spelling?) 0.720 lbs
Zachary Sporn 0.610 lbs
Larry “Special Delivery” Hou 0.120 lbsI attached a picture I took of the official sheet recorded by Sandy Levine of Carnegie Deli, one of the organizers of the event. Please note: These were the weights of each contestants bowl+pickles after the event. To find the weights they announced (what I listed, above) and to check my math, subtract the weights written on the sheet from 5 lbs. The bowl weight 1.4 lbs, so to find the actual results — which we got phoned later in the day, add 1.4 lbs to the weights I listed above.

You’re doing the RIGHT thing for hyping this on your site O.J. It’s easy to follow the lead of others who run a negative, mud-slinging web site, but it takes courage to do the right thing and set the example. Maybe one day all interorganizational mud-slinging will stop.
Call me an idealist, I don’t care.

I believe Sandy got confused, or was inaccurate with his math. 1.25 was probably what was left not what was eaten.
That would mean he ate 3.75lbs, though that seems a little high.
I don’t know for sure, I didn’t arrive until the winner’s were being announced.
Correct totals or not, it seems that the places were correct.
It was nice to eat a #13 & enjoy it, without having eaten a bunch of pickles first, & running to the bathroom a bunch of times.

The paper said he ate 1.25lbs which is 11 pickles. After the whole Pizza incident in China, where Chappy reported he ate 6 Large Pies and we found out it was 6 mini pizzas, I think we can believe the reporters who saw it with their own eyes.

That was a hard contest; the hardest one I’ve been in! Those pickles were S-O-U-R!!! It tasted like I was eating pure vinegar and garlic. I’m happy with how I did, but I’m a bit upset that the 3rd place finisher beat me by only 0.09lbs. That’s hard to swallow (no pun intended)

Didnt seem like much of a contest with those people leisurely eating, laughing and talking at the table. Who was the guy in the middle that kept convulsing? I guess he was the winner? Are all the contests like this?

You never realize how boring eating contests are to watch until you watch one without an announcer. Give the Shea’s credit for one thing, they understood early on that the eaters might be focus of the event, but the man with the microphone is the entertainment. (Although the pickle announcer did give us the pleasure of counting down from THIRTY.)

Why can’t everyone just enjoy the event rather than rag on it. It is truly sad when people feel the need to comment and critique on something that they did not attend or participate in. Get involved then post your comments. Kudos to everyone that posted constructive comments. The participants should be commended for attempting, rather than torn down for not achieving some arbitrary standard. Finally, Carnegie Deli should be appreciated for hosting the event, rather than criticize for their technique. The only thing the Shea Brothers can be commended for is their ability to discriminate people from participating. The Sheas are all about the money. The showmanship is to make a buck, not to benefit the event. Let’s try to act like brothers and sisters in competitive eating, instead of divide ourselves based on our association. All have their right to exist and participate.

Jill your are a good head and your enthusiasm for CE is refreshing. You are a real up-and-comer.
These pickles might have been hard to swallow, but I’m certain most things you’ll devour in the future will go down much easier.
Best of luck!

Anon 9:44, I agree with what you are saying. Maybe you could have left the comments about the Sheas out, seemed to go against what you were trying to say about everyone getting along. The participants, the host of the events, and the spectators should all be commeneded because it takes all three to truely make a great event.

Hi Arnie,
Congratulations on a job well done, I know how hard it is to win this contest, as a past champ who dethroned Curtis Sliwa back in 2000 and sent him into competitive eating retirement. United Pickles makes the best pickles around and Steve and Sandy are a class act. They always treated my family and I very nicely.
Your numbers this time were great, Arnie. You still have it. Congratulations also go out to all the others who placed, you all did a really nice job also.
Sincerely,
Kevin “Krazy Kevin” Lipsitz, former United – Carnegie Deli pickle champ, retired IFOCE eater
