Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef

Joey Chestnut has defeated Kobayashi 83 hot dogs to 67 to set a world record for a 10 minute hot dog contest.

In the first undercard, Matt Stonie defeated three aquatic Olympians (Ryan Lochte, Ryan Murphy and Max Irving) in a 3 minute wing eating contest, 53 wings to 36.

Netflix has an instagram post about the Chestnut / Kobayashi rivalry with two major errors: Kobayashi did not reverse in the 2007 Krystal Square Off, he missed it due to “jawthritis” and Kobayashi did not compete in the 2010 Nathan’s finals, he attended as a spectator and was arrested afterwards.

Let’s see how far the Nathan’s competitor would do if they banned dunking .Not very far

Koby made Chestnut… but Joey has broken the sport.
Really… they should just quit hotdogs contests at this point.
That is beyond incredible – for both of them!

Congrats to Matt, Leah, Kobi, and especially Joey. Incredible performances from everyone involved. I couldn’t believe how fast Joey was able to go despite the no dunking rules. The has to cement him once and for all as the GOAT.

Who says they were skinless dogs?If so that would make a huge difference I was just about to say dunking the dogs is for sissies but now that they ate skinless dogs well that’s a horse of a different color f

This was pretty awesome to watch. Joey was absurd, literally never slowed down, and Kobayashi absolutely crushed it coming out of retirement for this event. It was a hell of a send off for Takeru, I still have him as the goat, especially after this “no dunking”, “no removal of meat from bun” rule, He pioneered that… Great to watch all around.

    Dogs were smaller than Coney.

@7:01 it was explained during the commentary before the contest started. These dogs were similar in size and weight to Nathan’s but skinless and with steamed buns making them much faster and easier to get down.

6:32 you are wrong, it most definitely is a world record. just because Nathan’s hotdogs are natural casing, doesn’t mean that this can’t be a world record. Nathan’s isn’t the authority that gets to decide on “world records”.

so while true it may not be a “Nathan’s July 4th” record, it 100% is a world record. no asterisks either. Joey ate 83 hotdogs in 10 minutes without dunking. nobody else in the world can do that, and no one will do it again (other than Joey maybe) in our lifetime. get off the MLE / nathan’s bandwagon, and just appreciate the de facto greatest verified eating accomplishment in history.

    congrats Joey.

Well done to both Joey and Kobayashi, and also to Tim Janus “Eater X.” Never communicated with him or met him, but I was very impressed by his role as the “expert” and commentator. The whole thing was awesome and well done. I was only disappointed that Netflix kept in the part about drinking 3 gallons of water to train, without adding in what happens next. If somebody randomly watches that and tries drinking even 2 gallons of water to train for an eating event, they are gonna die, and it will be Netflix at well-deserved fault. They should have just kept that part out, or at least restructured it.

Fortunately the stomach has a pretty good defense system and forces people to stop and/or vomit. That is why we have not heard about training hospitalizations and deaths left and right by aspiring eaters and chuggers.

very true. someone that hasn’t done any real eating/food challenges/contests probably wouldn’t be able to drink more than 0.75 gallons of water before getting sick or stopping because of discomfort. but i guess it’s possible for a dummy to keep drinking water slowly over a longer period, say 30
to 45 minutes, without vomiting and thus possibly leading to intoxication.

but do you really think that the Netflix producers even really knew that joey and Koby were chugging gallons within 30 minutes before the contest start time? and then throwing it up? probably not…

As soon as I saw and heard this, I was like “Lawsuit! Stupidity!” by Netflix.

I forgot to include that Randy’s easily accessible training tips have likely kept a few of us safer in regards to water training over the past 10+ years.

Brian Dudzinaki a former competitive eater tried more than 2 gallons of water rushed to the hospital and almost died due to water on the brain It not only ended his career but his marriage as well

7:17 – there have been a few hospitalizations among ranked eaters due to water training. Not talked about.

I’m kind of a nerd, so I did some calculations based on what i presume to be the weights of the buns and hot dogs.

    Buns= Great Value (Walmart brand)
These weigh 11 oz per 8 buns, or 38.97g each

    Dogs = Ballpark Beef
I know these are 15 oz per 8 at my local grocery store, so I’m assuming this is what they used for Joey vs. Koby
    which equals 53.14g each

Total HDB weight = 92.12 grams
    Total eaten = 83
    Total weight consumer = 83 * 92.12 = 7,645.7 grams (16.86 lbs.)

    Joey’s Nathans Record (100g HDBs):
    Total eaten = 76
Total weight for Nathan’s record = 7,600 grams (16.76 lbs)

I am amused about how close the total weights are for both of these records. Again, just my own assumptions about the bun and dog weights for Netflix contest. If anyone has actual details on the dogs and buns used that differ from what I assumed, please let me know

So that’s how they do it. Stretch with water and throw up water and acid to make room. It’s a science to the extreme. Short life expectancy I bet too

The “well-deserved” might have been a bit harsh, since I agree that Netflix producers wouldn’t exactly think about that, since it is not in their realm. Does not clear them of responsibility though. It’s been so long that I had to look up his name, and I hope his family is doing okay, this many years later, but if anyone remembers Scott Bickel from Ohio (RIP) – I don’t remember details, but I know he had at least one issue stemming from water training, involving him passing out or something like that. Not sure if he needed medical treatment.

Rhonda Evans is still posting at https://x.com/rhondaleeindc

She has completely moved away from competitive eating.

My last interaction with the account was in 2015

    https://x.com/eatfeats/status/617391650181091328

Scott Bickel was bipolar. I am not aware of any training injuries he had.
