ouch. Eric, what is the MLE record for Habaneros? I never tried to eat one before. When chili recipes call for a teaspoon of them, I stay away. Good luck.

There is no established record for habaneros, I will be setting it. The key to that reocrd is that I will not use liquids at all during the one minute and for at least 5 minutes (depending on how long the radio station wants to wait) after the one minute is up. That one will hurt, not going to lie.

Good luck. Have you eaten one before?

Erik, you are one bold dude. One summer in college I ate one on a dare from my buddies. They told me they had to eat some when they were pledging at their frat. I told them that it didn’t sound that rough and I could eat one no problem. Anyways, going down was bad, but it was the aftermath when I digested it that caused me to miss a day of summer classes. I could never imagine eating more than 1 at one time and I definitely couldn’t imagine not having a gallon of milk next to me while doing it.

Carey, yes I have eaten many habaneros before but usually never more than two or three at a time.

Steak, I will use fresh (not pickled) organic orange habanero’s (chinense species). They are about 1-1.5 inches in length and range between 300,000 – 400,000 Scoville (jalapenos are around 3,500 – 5,000 Scoville).

yeah, I’m familiar with those. I once drank a bottle of pure habanero sauce on a bar bet and wound up halucinating abit an hour later….good luck..hehe…

I look forward to listening to the stunt if you can post it afterwards!

You must promise to blog while hallucinating afterwards.

I will be very happy if halucinations are the biggest side effect. Maybe I can get the EMT to take my blood pressure before and after the habaneros and I will post that. BTW, anyone who is interested will be able to listen to the event live at http://www.950kjr.com on Sept. 14.

I grew some habeneros in my yard last year. I would take them to parties and encourage drunk people to eat them. It made for a good show. I only have taken small bites of them and it hurt like a mutha. And I made the mistake of rubbing my eyes after sampling one – not the brightest idea. Good luck Erik!

I thought Guiness severely frowns on CE & stopped putting new records in the book.

Erik, I hope you either are getting well paid, or know for sure you’re getting in the book, &/or are helping out a very favorite charity.

As someone who has competed in a fresh Jalapeno eating contest before, the heat is much worse than pickled ones & I understand habaneros are much worse.

I most sincerely wish you & your insides a safe & successful journey.

Side issue, I didn’t sign any confidentiality agreement w/the japanese

Erik, which Krystal qualifiers did you enter?? Can I have your spot after the peppers kill you? Be careful, “Erik the Dead” just doesn’t sound so good…..

And wear gloves! Getting oil in your eyes is bad news, KR, but I have a guy friend who made the mistake of chopping some habaneros before heading to the bathroom. His brother made a comic about it: http://www.westword.com/php/comics/earplugs/2006-11-09.html

Let’s just say there was some emergency sour cream applied.

Thanks for the concern Bone Breaker but I have to disagree, Erik the Dead does have a nice ring to it.

Joe, I actually submitted the habanero record idea to Guinness and they responded requesting that I attempt to break the jalapeno record of 16 set last year by Alfredo Hernandes. So, they will recognize the jalapeno record as long as all of the right documentation is provided. And as far as getting paid, the record attempts and the whole one-day event is all for local charities so this one is not about me getting paid. I am, however seeking sponsors who are willing to put up money for the charities.

Might I suggest you attempt to break the ice cream record for most eaten in 30 seconds right after the jalapeno’s. I think you can take it, you will be more motivated than I was.

    Erik

Will the IFOCE be there to make this an official Record or will Guiness send out a Judge of some sort?

    Thank You

Don Moses Lerman —- just about the greatest competitive eater in history!

  25. anonymous said

    August 25, 2007 @ 12:40 pm

Yes Don this is a i minute BUT its not featuring an unknown food named JALAPEMO. Your event was held for an unknown people, the MEXIACN in the lost city of MILWAKEE. This one features Habaneros. The difference between jalapenos & habaneros is greater than the difference between YOU & Kobayashi. Also, what Erik is eating is fresh as opposed to the wimpy pickled version you ate. Again, more than the difference between you & Kobayashi. So, what Erik is attempting, is like if you ate some baby food applesauce & he ate habaf&ck*ngneros!

Don, you competed in laredo and milwaukee against a breed of people that more than likely dont even have existing birth records or might not even exist on this planet any longer. I think you would be more than satisfied to compete against yourself rather than have any competiton coming your way. Who have you ever beaten in the top ten or twenty for that matter to claim a title ?

I included the possibillity of his favorite charity! That said, while most of the eaters may not care about the $$$, there OWNERS certainly do.

If I didn’t care about the $$$ , & the freedom I would still be in the ifoce. If you want to call me a mercenery or the like so be it, but I don’t do this SOLELY for the fun of it. If there wasn’t some form of profit motive, I wouldn’t do it!
