Ok… somebody on the IFOCE website got screwed up majorly on this one. Rich was there yesterday and he did quite well. He finished 3rd with 6 lbs and change. Rich is one of the best competitiors out there today. Joey, Rich, and myself all enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and I would like to thank the people at Harrah’s for putting on a first class show. Eddie was the MC and his mic skills have improved tremendously since the crabcake contest which was the first contest I met him at. A big congrats out to Joey for once again proving he is the best in America.

It’s almost as if the IFOCE doesn’t give a shit about events and results after they happen, as long as the sponsor is happy and no one chokes to death.

See how the folks at Krystal have taken control of the Square Off and provided a top notch series of events? Web video, text results, a kick ass dedicated website…now that’s the way it’s supposed to be run.

Chip is right because if you cut and paste this link, you can see that Rich was at the contest in the picture.

Yo i agree with anony, IFROCE never really gave a damn about anything or anyone if you want to get technical. Once they get the money from the sponsor everything is ok.The food most of the time in contests taste like shit but noone has ever really complained to the point of making it better. You have people eating right on top of each other at the table which is sickening and extremely uncomfortable . 2007 IFOCE future will take the form of alot more people retiring or the correct word is quitting. You will have six or seven of the same top names going against each other day in and day out for the big prize money and if they can get a couple of starstruck fools or locals from the audience to fill up the table thats about all they need to make this work. Anyone that disputes what i just wrote is either new , or has made a ton of money eating which gives you every reason to be an ass kiss. where is the love bro?

Agree with Anony and Grim. I hope IFOCE reads this. It’s sad that with 15 competitors in Council Bluffs they only care about the top 3 (maybe 4) spots. If they continue to do that, how will they maintain the IFOCE rankings of the top 50 eaters? And if they lose that, how will they maintain interest? Grim is right that this would devolve into an event for the top 6 or so eaters to just go get a paycheck at. The adventure and interest would vanish. They’ve already fixed their booboos, almost all the way (they’ve now omitted Jim The Hammer altogether and still show Richard as placing 4th. Hoping they attempt to fix it again and add more names.

And I agree with “AnotherAnony.” How many people who were totally unrecognized in the results travelled great distances to get to desolate Council Bluffs? Will they do it again? With just a few more minutes of work, info on all eaters can be captured and displayed on the IFOCE website. It’s not rocket science.

More eaters would show up and there would be better events (people battling it out for the higher places). The eaters already have to try to divy up which events they show up to versus which events their close eater friends will show up to. The Sheas might figure it out soon and fix it or they still just dont care and know that since the sport is becoming popular, they might figure they have a few more years on them before higher payouts and payouts for more places will be available. I also agree that their reporting has been entirely shitty, but more often now I believe they’ve been sending two IFOCE reps out to events, which would make me think they could get the PR going along with these “road reports” postings.

They won’t even give retirement xmas or new years parties for their eaters . Oh yeah they will promise it but will it ever come true? How much was made with golden palace? with alka seltzer? with krytstals? Nathans ???? . Remember the ones that tell you they never made any money on the deal , plead poverty or cry that they don’t have a pot to piss on are the ones with the fattest bank accounts known to mankind

Mr Rifkin i believe that after reading these last few negative ifoce posts you have a topic of debate that sparks a world of interest. This is far better than reading some of these idiots with comments such as “wow joey ate that much? Congrag”? Or “does anyone know exactly how many so and so ate”? Honestly who gives a shit ? Or the earth shattering news that Lefevre was mistaken left out of the contest on the ifoce site. Let them start addressing the issues and needs of the members Forgettting to mention that Rich Lefevre competed in an event is not only trivial but should be the least of the problems they never bother to correct.

If a paint contractor is paid in full for a job before he starts ,he or she loses the incentive and the eventual outcome might be a shitty job when its finished . Same applies to the ifoce contests and the sponsors. Now you know why they could care less about the quality of the food on the table or reporting the results on their site.

I like the idea that the top three finishers in a contest should be rewarded handsomely, but maybe the IFOCE should consider payouts down to 6th place. (And I’m not just saying that because it’s the only chance I have at making any money in this game!)

It’d be a nice way to reward some of the anonymous eaters who traveled for the event and maybe have a little bit of talent but can’t compete with the top three eaters because, lets face it, not many people on this earth can.

I know I’m going to get shit on for suggesting this “loser payout” system, but I don’t care. It doesn’t have to be much money and they don’t even have to be recognized on stage. Something like this would be cool (take note, the “loser payout” system costs only $175):

    1st – $2,000
    2nd – $1,000
    3rd – $500
    4th – $100
    5th – $50
    6th – $25

I think it is MUCH more meaningful and plausible to have congratulatory comments than mean-spirited, hurtful, negative comments that do nothing but undermine the growth potential of both the sport of CE and its competitors. Nothing is gained by that, unless its done in an objective, respectful way to help that person / organization improve.

I’m not saying that this is a perfect world and all is well all the time, because that’s not true. But sometimes the way a message is delivered is as important as the message itself. And it’s not right to attack eaters just because of their affilliation. And I say that as one who has been pretty much a staunch IFOCE follower for years.

I think its no coincidence that 90 % or more of the successful eaters in the two organizations refrain from these negative tactics. I think at least part of the reason for their success can be attributed to respect for their fellow competitors.

The other 10 % are what I call “shit in the punchbowl” type folks, whose happiness is achieved by putting others down. That’s sad because the only purpose is to harm, not help.

Mega, I think you have a valid point. A percentage scale that I think has merit goes like this, based on a $10,000 total prize purse:

    1st: 40 % = $4,000
    2nd: 25 % = 2,500
    3rd: 15 % = 1,500
    4th: 10 % = 1,000
    5th: 6 % = 600
    6th: 4 % = 400

The philosophy goes like this: The first place amount is 40 % of the total purse, with each successive lower place finish being approximately 5/8 (62.5 %, but with some rounding) of the amount of the higher place finish total.

Many strategies can work. I just like this one. Paying down to 6th place also will increase interest in the competitions and is more equitable, in my opiniion. Otherwise, it’s always either Joey, Sonya, Pat, Chip, X, or Rich winning. Same ol’ people all the time and ONLY those receiving money. As much as I like the eaters I just mentioned (especially Sonya). that does get old.

The scale above will amply reward the top 3 finishers and yet pay out enough money to the lower placing finishers (they’re ALL winners!) to stimulate interest from and amply reward folks not ranked in the top 20 or so.

The pay out should be determined by the amount of the total purse. The only contest recently that I thought the payout didn’t go down far enough was Waffles the payouts were really top heavy.

There’s one problem with the 4th-6th payout system: ties. Speaking from my (VERY limited) personal experience, how would that have worked at the Kolache Contest when there was a four-way tie for fourth place? Roll 4th through 6th place payouts into one and divide by four?

  16. Rhonda Evans said

    September 18, 2006 @ 1:13 pm

Zero you’re correct. For instance, if there’s a 3-way tie for third, add the third, 4th, and 5th place money and divide by three and distribute that amount to the 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finishers. If there are four people tied for 4th place, such as Kolache, as you say, then 4th, 5th, and 6th place money would be added together, divide by four and split it up evenly. That’s standard procedure.

I felt particularly bad for Jim Hamrich who put forth a great effort eating four pounds of pulled pork but left empty handed. It would have been nice if he got $250 for his efforts (that would have made the total purse exactly $5,000 which sounds a lot better than $4,750). I personally think prize money should always be awarded down to at least fifth place regardless of the total purse and that everyone should be recognized for what they did instead of just the top eaters. If enough people agree and let the Sheas know how they feel, perhaps this can be remedied someday.

Enough of this splitting prize money bullshit. Its stupid conversation. Why dont you email the sheas with these ideas. Doubt you will get a reply. You are basically talking nickels and dimes splitting 25 dollars . How much are you shelling out to attend these contests. 2 3 hundred dollars and you want split 100 here and 50 there. Get them to pay your damn airfare or hotel and cut the bullshit . You really amaze me with this stupidity

Personally, I go to contests that are within driving distance only. I cannot afford to fly anywhere to compete especially knowing that more than likely I will not place in prize money. When they payout the top 3 only and you have 3 of the top 10 eaters there, I know I am just competing for fun more than anything. If I didn’t like doing the competitions, I wouldn’t go. The money is obviously nice to win but I think anyone who goes to these contests doesn’t just do it for the money. You have to have a passion for what you are doing and mostly you need to have fun. I have been in 2 tamale contests and got my ass kicked in both. But I can say that I have eaten with Rich, Tim, Pat, El Toro, Seaver, The Legend, Chip, and several amateurs. Just being able to say that I competed with those guys is pretty awesome to me and every one of them were as friendly as could be. So I say quit bitchin about prize money and do it because you want to.

Jason you are a classy individual. That’s a refreshing, much-needed attitude. You and your eating brethren deserve much more, yet you have learned to appreciate what you have, yet you keep pushing forward. You’ll go far in life. Those that spend an excessive amount of time bitching and moaning have yet to learn that. Good on you!!

Rhonda you are a wonderful individual. You bring a breath of fresh air into this room along with your vast knowledge of competitive eating. These miserable individuals that frequent this site day in and day out with their horrible and vicious comments about the Shea’s and competitive eating basically have no friends, no social life no nothing. They more than likely smell like shit never get layed and get their kicks making wiseass remarks while hiding behind a computer . Do people realize how hard these two young men have worked in putting together a striving organization that people can enjoy and have fun with? No. All that concerns them is the money and expenses they will have to endure. Too bad! Everyone has money problems. If you want to bitch then dont go to the contests. Noone is forcing you to do anything. I get sick reading some of this stuff.

Thanks Becky. That’s right. The Sheas are the entrepreneurs, and should of course be rewarded for their risks. It’s supply and demand. If the eaters don’t like the prize structure, etc, they don’t have to attend the contests, because there’s strength in numbers.

Evidently, based on the participation at various events, eaters are at least fairly well satisfied. Any dissatisfaction will be expressed by participatation (or lack of) and the market will correct. It’s not as one might lead you to believe.

Likewise, I don’t dislike the AICE, simply because their eaters are in a different league. That’s their choice. And if they are happy then so be it. The more prize money (offered at IFOCE events) doesn’t always equate to increased happiness or satisfaction. And that’s okay.
