When you are the best competitive eater the world has seen, the demand for your time is higher than others. Therefore maybe an appearance fee is warranted. Except maybe when charity is involved. The guy puts a lot of heart and effort into every contest he does, it appears that he deserves these rewards.

Yeah- he’s putting more heart & effort in than all of us? The greatest eater in the world? You been dippin in the Shea’s stash again?

Absolutely he deserves it. He is the best, as will all professions, sports etc, the best get paid the most. You arn’t going to make a trip to see rank No 40+ etc, you may well make a trip to see someone who is no#1 at anything.

The only eater who can even come close to rivaling Joey is Koby. The fact that people get tired of hearing about Joey is a tribute to how good the man is.

DAVE UK, there is a difference in life in being able to demand something and in actually deserving it, and in the last few decades people have lost sight of that difference. Just because you can demand something, doesn’t mean that you should. This ice cream contest…who cares? It’s just a media thing. But keep that difference in mind down the road.

If it is basically an appearance, I thought Pat was the ice-cream King, he is far more entertaining than Joey. He is certainly high enough ranked to warrant an appearance fee. Do you think people want or are drawn to such an event if it has the number 1 ranked eater no matter who that may be or doesn’t the personality play a part. Oh…..of course…..I forgot. The practical Sheas do not have to pay to send Pat from Chicago. But actually, I, like so many on here are only spinning our own yarns. We know nothing about who was asked, who is paid what etc. Perhaps Pat was asked and couldn’t go at that time. Too many assumptions made here.

As great as Pat is in ice cream and other sweets, no doubt he is the sweets king, it is easier for people to identify with the number 1-ranked eater in the world, and 5-time mustard yellow belt holder, than it is any other current IFOCE eater.

Its not about morals, its market forces. If he demanded a figure that a provider didn’t want to pay then it wouldn’t suit either party therefore no agreement. The host does think he is worth the cash, due to his reputation and ability. Its the hosts judgement.
Does anybody deserve anything for eating anything? probably not.

For those of you sports historians that live in NY NJ area Pat is like the Buck and Bernie Williams of competitive eating . Buck always put up huge numbers with the NJ Nets and so did Bernie with the Yankees. But both always lived in the shadow of a bigger more marketable name on they respective teams. Same with Pat for as long as Joey and Kobi are around Pat will never be truly recognized for his accomplishments

Sports historians? Not necessary to make such an obvious analogy for any athletes. It is pretty simple, isn’t it? Kobi is in a category by himself. Joey overall is a close second. Pat is a third to both, a second to Joey but only inches closer in Nathans. He is certainly far more entertaining than Joey by leaps. Kobayashi doesn’t entertain, he just eats in an amazing way. And what buffoon wrote saying why didn’t Kobi compete in other contests in the past and only in Nathans? Duh……he was living in Japan. Unless IFOCE paid his way to compete, would you? Except for Nathans and Krystals once they had bigger purses, it made no sense for anyone living outside of the US to compete in contests here.

Joey won$34,000 so far eating in 2011. In addition to whatever he makes as an engineer. He doesn’t have enough money still to have his teeth fixed?

If anyone has an interest in making competitive eating a real sport they have to focus more on the other “players”. They can’t just be known as those guys who eat the hot dogs on July 4th at Coney Island. What ranks him #1 in the world? Money earned? Where has he traveled outside the US to compete? During Nathan’s there was a poll that said 18.2% of the population consider this a sport. I don’t doubt that if competitive eating is only on espn twice a year & the focus is always on Chestnut & Kobiashi mo matter who is there. Some of these esters are amazing! Better to watch than Joey dry heaving in his mouth & jumping up & down like he’s having a sesiure. Kobi always whining about Nathan’s & more famous for his protests than his eating. Put the focus on someone else for five minutes & you may just grab sports fans attention.
