I’ve got some sorrow with Kate leaving the IFOCE. She was professional, intellegent and kind and will be very hard to replace. The position requires the patience of Job, considering that she had to deal with all of us lunatics and Kate was always graceful.

    Good Luck in Italy Kate!

    Pro conquers 3-lb. burger

Dale Boone poses in front of Doughboys after successfully eating the 3-lb burger in less than 30 minutes. He chose to name the burger Dale’s Daniel Boone Burger after his ancestor

MORGANTON – Unbuckle your belts, burger fans. Doughboys Pizzeria Café has thrown down the gauntlet and issued another challenge: eat its three-pound burger in less than 27 minutes and you can rename it.

Why 27 minutes? Because on Oct. 18, Dale Boone of Atlanta, Ga., finished the massive burger and a side of fries three minutes under the 30-minute time limit and earned the right to dub the previously unnamed sandwich “Dale’s Daniel Boone Burger.”

Dale is a ninth-generation grandson of frontiersman Daniel Boone. He also is a professional in the World League of Competitive Eating and holds 23 world eating records. He learned about Doughboy’s challenge through the WLOCE.

Beating the clock was the toughest part, Boone said. While eating the burger, he thought at times he wouldn’t finish under the time limit, but he kept on going.

Boone ate the meat patty and fries first, alternating the two because the fries were greasy.

He said the key to finishing the burger in record time is saving the sourdough-bread bun for last. Unlike regular bread, sourdough bread expands, so soaking it in water doesn’t help get it down. Boone moistened the bread by sopping up the fries’ grease.

Doughboys owner Daniel Dolinger said at least 248 people attempted the challenge, but Boone was the first who accomplished the feat in less than 30 minutes.

There is at least one serious contender for the new naming rights. One local man finished eating in 32 minutes.

Dolinger said Doughboys also awards a $50 gift card each month to the person who eats the burger in the fastest time.

Diners at the restaurant, 410 E. Fleming Drive, can still earn a free meal by finishing the burger and fries in less than 30 minutes, Dolinger added.
