Miki Sudo ate 52 ears of corn in 12 minutes to win this afternoon’s corn eating contest at the Sweet Corn Fiesta in West Palm Beach, FL, ending Gideon Oji’s three contest winning streak.

    The fact that MLE would let someone compete who had a stroke from overeating shows they only care about money with no regard for their eater’s well-being.

    I just don’t understand why there is a need to be so pessimistic to newer eaters, just starting out. The sport of competitive eating and food challenges is spiraling downward lol, and there are hardly any new people starting out new. What is MLE going to be when Joey finally retires? It’s next to impossible to start a successful YouTube channel these days because of how much competition there is, amongst a variety of other reasons. Any negative habits that newer people might be practicing, are just things they learned from veterans still doing well these days. There is no point in being negative towards most newer people who are just trying to improve and grow, and I do say just most. Some people earn it haha.

    People considering getting into competitive eating need to be aware that the health risks are probably higher and the rewards lower than what they might expect. For the foreseeable future, there will be less contests, prizes and media coverage and I am not sure what will reverse the negative trend.

    Randy – Joeys replacement is already in place. “The Hungry Couple”. It’s a great story as long as you don’t dig
    into past relationships. Shinning a light on “backstory” has been a marketing tactic for years.

    When Joey, and Geoff go, which I imagine is really soon, there will be almost no one, frequently eating, other than “The Hungry Couple” ranked in the top 20…..

    MLE has a problem with it’s immediate future, if it wants to stay around.

    Here are a few solutions…

    – either help pay eaters travel costs or spread out the prize money better
    – prevent the top tier eaters from going to everything, to incentive mid level eaters to fly out
    – up the “showmanship”. Barclay is great, but that is not much by itself

    Pro wrestling is scripted, but it’s entertaining…. People want to be entertained

    -Need more incentive. Covering travel would be a huge game-changer. MLE is too scared to invest in its talent though. They want to gain the crowds / revenue from hosting or selling broadcast rights to big events before they are willing to dish out to eaters ranked #2 to # 50.
    -I like the idea of limiting the number of contests any eater can go to. If there’s, say, 25 events in a year, maybe only allow any eater to attend a total of 15. It would introduce some need for “tactical” planning/thinking by eaters as well–as eaters would need to try to guess who will attend which events, to improve their shots of winning.
    -I don’t think spreading out prize money would make much of a difference. Most MLE contests pay out to at least 5th place. If 1st and 2nd place have smaller purses, then the best eaters are unlikely to waste a whole day traveling for an event. Now, upping overall prize $ for each place, first through fifth or sixth, would absolutely help. But MLE won’t push for this change until they start making more income.
    -MLE eaters need to almost unionize / band together. If the top 5 – 7 eaters all threaten to leave and go independent, and approach MLE with some actual demands, you bet the Shea brothers would be willing to have a talk with them.

    That is ten places paid. With 10th place being enough for dinner and a little
    gas money… That prize structure is very easy to implement and still
    pays the top 3 a nice days work

    Paying out to 10 places is a joke. Pretty much a “Participation Trophy”. If you have room for dinner and an appetite after a pro eating contest, you don’t deserve “enough for dinner”.

    Really any payout under $100 for placing at a Pro event is laughable. I think paying out top 5 to 7 places is fair and sensible. Anything past that is kind of a joke.

    Comment @1230 nailed it regarding retaining eating talent. Increasing pay out and covering travel costs would lead to more competition outside of the regular top tier ranked talent seen at most events as of late. As far as spreading out the prize money to let’s say 7th-10th, $100-75-50-25 this isn’t going to be much of a game changer of attending an event unless the location for the eater is relatively inexpensive to attend. Location definitely plays a role in determining the field (eaters looking to make money) for some events as small cities that are expensive to get to are only going to have the best eaters as travel costs quickly add up.

    Another suggestion may be to cover travel costs for all eaters confirmed (limit 8 or 9 eaters ) and reduce the prize fund (~80%) though only pay out the top 4 or 5 spots

    For a 6100 prize purse reduced to 4880 (may look like this):

    1st 2400
    2nd 1500
    3rd 500
    4th 300
    5th 180

    With a reduced prize fund, there may be more opportunities to bring more events on board (2023 MLE event calendar currently only lists 9 events on the website) so then that would equate to more competitions bringing in revenue for MLE and also eaters as they know that travel is being accounted for.

    The hate to those folks is well warranted and I’m betting it’s not just one person. Just look at the main people talked about on this forum (Raina, Joel, Josh, Eli). They’re all people users. People hate being back stabbed and used by others for their own personal gain. Have you met an eater who hasn’t had a bad experience with Joel?

    I just saw on Facebook that someone that took part in a local bacon eating contest in Florida is complaining about Wayne Algenio entering the contest, which was for charity, and the rules stated “No Professionals”. It seems like the other competitor, (Jt Posada is the name he posted under on Facebook), is upset and trying to get the contest organizer to “do something about it”.

    I wonder if anything will happen…Wayne cant really argue he’s an amateur since he did the MLE corn contest…

    I dont see anywhere that says the CONTEST itself is for charity, but the whole festival is for charity / non-profit purposes. Here is some info:

    One of the aspects of this Festival that makes it so unusual is its mission. The City of Deltona has partnered this year to raise money for a local 501c-3 non-profit organization, Backpack Buddies, who supports alleviating hunger for children and families in Volusia County. This festival was brought to Deltona to build Economic Development, Community Engagement with Deltona residents and to have one of the largest, fun-filled festivals in one of Deltona’s largest parks, Dewey O. Boster.
