New Poll: # of top 10 sitting out Nathan’s

The new poll asks how many members of the current IFOCE top 10 will not participate in this year’s Nathan’s hot dog eating contest. The participation of several members in that list is in doubt. Sonya Thomas has stated that she will no longer participate in contests allowing dunking, which will result in her missing Nathan’s if she adheres to that restriction. Joey Chestnut has stated he is not sure if he will defend his title, and an item in Beautiful Brian’s Bits & Pieces said that Chip Simpson will miss all IFOCE contests in 2008. Kobayashi claims to still be suffering the effects of “jawthritis”.

The 2008 Nathan’s qualifier schedule will hopefully be released soon; last year’s slate was made public on March 1.

    Sonya said she is going to limit not completely abandon her participation in dunking contests, Joey is just bluffing, and something got lost in translation between Beautiful Brian and Chip Simpson. Everybody will be there.

    I think that’s right, and I voted that zero will sit out. I think Sonya may well make an exception here, and I also remember her leaving open the possibility of competing in some dunking events, and Nathan’s is the grandaddy of them all. I too believe that the rest are bluffing.

    Could you imagine, however, if Joey, Koby, Sonya, and Chip really did pass on the event? (I realize this is pure conjecture.) Pat would win eating just over 50, X would finish second with about 44, Humble Bob would finish third (@35) and Rich would finish 4th with around 32..

    This is what was in last month’s Bits & Pieces about the possible absences:

    Reliable sources have informed me that there is a very strong chance Joey Chestnut will not compete in Nathans this year.His breakup with his girlfriend was certainly a contributing factor in the decision. . Chestnut has five microwave ovens in his apartment which were used for his Krystal training and other aspects of CE. Sources have also informed me that Chip Simpson might not be competing at all this year.

    Being the competitor that Joey is, there is no way in this lifetime that he will not defend the title. To do so would give the appearance that he is running scared (from Koby or/and Pat), and Joey would be one of the last people in CE to run from anyone, I do believe.

    If Joey sits Nathan’s out Pat will win for sure. Joey is probably looking for an appearance fee to appear at Nathan’s.
