I’m friends with Matt, but I think even he’d agree he hasn’t quite yet earned the #2 ranking spot yet. I’d put him at #3 at this point though! And I’m sure that’s where he’ll be next time rankings are updated. I am shocked at the speed of Matt’s improvement.

Two contests is just a snapshot. Eight of nine is a panorama. Plus Pat killed him at Nathan’s, and that is the true gauge. It’s worth at least a dozen victories elsewhere.

I agree with everything Kevin said. From talking to the guys at the gyoza contest, there’s a chance that Pat’s not totally focused on the game right now. But he knows very well what Stonie’s capable of, and the next time they clash I think all bets are off. The way that Matt just keeps improving is almost frightening.

Matt hasn’t earned #3 rank since he has never beat Tim, yet.!

The #2 ranked eater in the world cannot be someone who eats 46 hot dogs. Period. Especially when three eaters are routinely able to eat more than 50.

Just wondering why everyone uses Nathan’s as a gauge for how good an eater is? I understand that it has the biggest purse and requires great capacity, but there are soo many other contests during the season. Contests that involve technique foods, capacity foods etc.

Agree with Ben Do. Nathans and hotdogs has become a speciality in and of itself. Think it should not be used differently from other foods and contests as the (almost) sole indicator of ranking.

Nathan’s is the contest that everybody wants to participate in. It’s the reason, directly or in a roundabout way, that every eater started eating competitively. It’s the reason all other contests exist. Ask a good competitive eater, “Which contest would you most like to win?” and the truthful answer will be Nathan’s. Why does Joey Chestnut make $200,000 per year? Because sponsors want him at their events. Why do they want him at their events? Because he wins Nathan’s. If he didn’t win Nathan’s, the wouldn’t give a s—.
Ben Do, those are the facts.

Issuing a retraction. I no longer agree with Ben Do. Thanks anonymous from 2:17 am, from one to another, the message is clear.

I understand he gets great publicity and has a huge name because of that…but if it wasn’t on July 4th would it be the same? I’m not talking about how big of a name they get from it. I’m asking when you judge eaters on their skills. We’re on an eating forum, we keep up with eaters contests frequently so we know the skills they have, and the skills that are required to win them. So why always use Nathan’s as a measure of how good an eater is?

Who is usually considered the better quarterback, Elway or Marino? Usually Elway because he won the big show. Nathan’s is CE’s Super Bowl (it’s on ESPN and the only contest most know of) and will ALWAYS be worth more in the rankings and perception.
Only the best get in and it tests EVERYTHING (speed, stamina, technique, capacity, taste tolerance, weather, pressure, prize money, etc.), so it pretty much is the playoffs.

That being said, Matt’s done well and deserves to be mentioned with Pat, but 38-1 WR’s speaks for itself. If he pushes Joey next year at Nathan’s he’ll earn it.

I’ve never done hot dogs so I never really thought about it like that, but that makes sense.
