Regis Philbin refereed 1963 eating contest featuring Ernie Ladd
The MLE facebook announces that Pat Bertoletti, Tim Janus and Crazy Legs Conti will attempt to break the record for banana eating on tomorrow’s episode of Live with Regis & Kelly.
Regis Philbin had previous involvement with competitive eating before the debut of Live with Regis & Kelly. In 1963, he served as a referee for an eating contest between San Diego Charger defensive lineman / pro wrestler Ernie “Big Cat” Ladd and Nick Cordileone. Pat Bertoletti will stay in New York City and compete in Thursday’s cannoli contest in an attempt to obtain his 36th record. Eric “Badlands” Booker and Maria “Edible” have also been announced as entrants.

After that 1963 contest, Brian Seiken sent a letter to the editor of the San Diego Tribune, Orenthal J. Rifkin, that he reported it first and told him to quit stealing his stuff without giving him any credit.

Tim and Pat both tied it. Of course Seiken wouldn’t give Tim credit. If Crazy Legs had tied it, he wouldn’t have given Crazy Legs credit either. Probably some day Seiken will turn on Pat and not give him credit for anything either.
