Sonya Thomas will get the recognition she has long deserved and cheer for others to join her. She sets the standard as an eater and a person of good will.

    I second that SI!

On top of that, Sonya has been one of the biggest rock stars of CE since she first showed at Nathan’s. People are attracted to her winning, never-say-die attitude.

I see a lot of her competitive spirit in Alex Ovechkin (The Great 8!) and the recently retired mare, Zenyatta, both of whom give everything they have when competing.

Lots of people may (and do) want to see Sonya go down in defeat, but it’s out of respect for what she has accomplished; she’s been at the top for so long and people want to see new blood.

Even when people slam Sonya, either passively or overtly, which is done quite often, she takes the high road and avoids confrontation. That’s a great tactic, because addressing such comments only give them strength, and apparently Sonya knows that.

If there ever is a competitive eating hall of fame as MLE once proposed, this should be the inscription below Sonya’s tribute:

“The main thing I wanted to share was the belief that if ordinary people have extraordinary desire, they can accomplish virtually anything in life, regardless of the field of endeavor.” — Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas
