I can confirm Pat had 46. The rest look right.

I don’t know what happened, but I was going okay, about 12 the first half. Then, I got really grossed out about halfway through and came to a near total stop. Just couldn’t get myself to swallow and felt pretty nauseous, even though I wasn’t near full. So I’m a little perplexed as to what exactly happened, but thems the breaks. Those hot dogs defintely fought back. On the plus side, a random drunk girl came up and started trying to kiss me afterwards. That was kinda fun, heh heh.

Kevin, I’ve been there several times and I know what happened. The fat, grease and salt from the dogs told your brain to stop and your rhythm came to a halt way before you were feeling full. It’s so true that hotdog eating is all mind over stomach matter.

Pat channeled the Hooligan Pride and TURNED IT OUT! 46! He’s right there with Joey and Koby. This is going to be an exciting July 4. Congrats to him and congrats to KRoss for experiencing what sounds like a massive brick wall. Weird. (Not sure if congrats are the right thing to offer there.) What do you mean “trying to kiss you”…you resisted her efforts?

Yeah Allen, the more people I talk to the more tell me what you’re saying here – that you have to build up a tolerance to the dogs moreso than most foods.

Allen’s right. You’ve had the Meatsweats.

I have a feeling 46 will NOT sit well with Pat and he will train even harder for the big contest. Trust me when I say Pat is definitely not out of the running from stealing the title on the 4th

If you cannot eat 20 more dogs and buns you dont belong at the table. Anyone that can eat 20 or more are considered elite eaters. 12-14 hot dog eaters are the bottom of the barrel and they come a dime a dozen. Don’t tell me about how much asparagus , corn french fries or any other bullshit food you came in third or fourth. Deuce or more production in dogs will distinguish you from a shitty eater to a great eater. Aside from Joe Menchetti and maybe Ian Hickman i do not believe there is one other AICE member that can eat 20 or more dogs and buns in 12 min. If you are not able to put up the big numbers in dogs , do everyone a favor and stay the hell home. Wastin yer time.

Enough of Pat. What about The Locust, who ate the tre and three! And in his home town even. Yet, he still has to travel to try to qualify? That rule needs to be changed, because it’s costly and totally unfair for eaters. I think that if a person can cross the 30-Dog barrier he should automatically qualify for pity sake!

Terrific job Rich! I respect your talent more than that of 95 % of the other eaters. You are head and shoulders above most of your younger peers! May you keep going another dozen years!

    Rhonda!

More than any other food, by far and away, HDBs are the truest single indicator of competitive eating talent. Firstly, you’re dealing with two substances, the bun and the dog. Secondly, it rewards eaters who best display multiple attributes of CE talent, which are speed, stomach capacity, and jaw strength.

That’s why if you want to use a single contest to rank competitive eaters, Nathan’s is the one. For the most part, with few exceptions, just look at the 10 finishers, and if you rank eaters in their order of finish at that event, you’ll usually be fairly accurate. You can go back 10 years and that logic holds up quite well.

I believe this is the second year that the Locust has eaten over 30 at a qualifier and not won. Perhaps the MLE should reconsider the Qualifier Structure to take into account certain benchmarks. (Rhonda’s Idea) Maybe 30 or more auto-qualifies you? There’s only a handful of people that can eat that much anyway, why run them through the wringer and have them put the extra time & expense out? Rich deserves to be in Coney for that performance, but will have to shclep to another contest to make it.

Nathans and Krystals are the benchmarks for all. I enjoy Krystals much more, but I think HBD’s have such a Physiological Effect that they test the soul.

As good as Pat is, Koby and Joey both will eat AT least a half dozen dogs more than Pat on the 4th. I expect both Koby and Joey to eat more than 55. Pat might be good for a dog or two more than he ate in the qualifier and that is still outstanding. So I only mean that in a most positive, but realistic way.

Chapman, Menchetti, Coondog, Gilbert, Lyle, and Kuhns could all eat close to 40 dogs and would have no problem outeating everyone at Nathans except for Joey Koby and Pat. S and maybe Chip. Thomas, Janus, Rich and others would be no problem whatsoever, unless they can somehow learn to eat 40 plus dogs.

Thanks so much for your support, Rhonda. In all honesty I should have been deducted for at least one bun due to excess debris. I did eat 33 hot dogs but no more than 32 buns as I couldn’t shove the mess on my plate in before time expired. My number should have been 32 1/2 instead of 33.

I agree it does suck that locust has to go way out of his way to get to the finals with a 30+ dog performance. Getting 20+ and not qualifying is one thing, but 30? That doesn’t seem right to me.

And of course anonymous is right that 20 is the benchmark, but also seems to forget how many eaters started out with numbers in the teens and now are doing 20+. People do improve! Though I disagree that hot dogs are the only benchmark of a good eater. There is some eaters out there that perform very well at hot dogs, but only average at other contests. So it works both ways. Though I can’t imagine grounds to say someone who can do the deuce is a bad eater – so I get your point.

I’m pretty sure those dogs hit me so hard because I don’t eat beef in actual life. Give me a seafood contest and I won’t hit a wall.

Oh, and megamunch, I just meant that the chick grabbed me unexpectedly. . .I wasn’t resisting 🙂

I will ignore those idiots ? said and aice farm talent. None of those names with the exception of Menchetti have ever come close to 20 hot dogs.Maybe they could eat 30 hot dogs with no bun.. That is why they are minor league and MLE is major league

  21. Rhonda Evans said

    May 4, 2007 @ 3:57 pm

Menchetti could eat over 20 for sure, maybe as many as 25 or 26. I just don’t know about the others. It’s hard to speculate either way, but I would be shocked if anyone, besides Joe, outside of Hickman and Goose could do the deuce.

If everyone who couldn’t eat 20+ HDBs stayed home, there’d be only two or three people at the table and that would be, how do you say…F**KING LAME. That’s like saying every major league baseball player who can’t hit 40 home runs in a season should just retire.

Ten bucks says anonymous can’t eat 20 HDBs. Otherwise, they wouldn’t remain anonymous!

Seriously, this is amazing. Sweet job, Rich and Pat! I’m not sure if that 46 was enough to make Rhonda fall out of her chair, but she’s teetering there on the edge for sure.

Pat and Rich, congrats. Excellent new personal bests for both of you. People, Rich may not need to qualify again – remember the wild card berth? 33 or 32.5, judging from last year’s numbers, amd taking into account how many U.S. qualifiers there are this year, will easily put Rich in the finals as a wild card.

Qualifiers are based on totals from up to three contests so Rich still needs to compete again.
