Analysis of opting out of Nathan’s women’s division for men’s
Don Sturdy mentions the possibility of Stephanie Torres opting out of the women’s division of the Nathan’s finals for the more lucrative men’s division. (It is not clear if the rules allow this.) Here are the average amounts eaten and corresponding prizes for the top 8 places in the past three years when the contest duration has been ten minutes.
$10000 | 60.33 | 1st |
$5000 | 56.17 | 2nd |
$2500 | 44.67 | 3rd |
$1500 | 42.33 | 4th |
$1000 | 36.58 | 5th |
34.33 | 6th | |
33.17 | 7th | |
31.67 | 8th |
If the women’s purse of $5000 is distributed in the same manner as the men’s purse, the following prizes will be awarded: $2500/$1250/$625/$375/$250.
The absences of Takeru Kobayashi and Sonya Thomas from this year’s men’s contest could lower the average amount eaten for some of the places, but it is probable that all male moneywinners will eat at least 33 hot dogs which is the average amount for seventh place in the previous three years.
If a rookie woman eats 31-36, that would be between the average amount of Sonya Thomas, 37 (34, 41, 36) and Juliet Lee 30 (29, 34, 27), which would be good for second place and a prize of $1250, which exceeds the men’s fifth place prize of $1000.
For the top woman to earn more money in the men’s contest she would have to come in at least second place, since the women’s first prize of $2,500 equals the men’s third place prize. The average top male performance excluding Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi over the past three years has been 47.33 (42 55 45), which exceeds Sonya Thomas’ personal best of 41 hot dogs by six.
A list of all the top 8 amounts for the past 3 years is available after the jump.

In order for to even compete in the men’s, she would have to win her qualifier outright or at least the wild card for the men’s. Let’s see her do that before we can even discuss the possibility of her competing in the men’s division.
Secondly, if this is the first year of a women’s finals and the chances of a lack of women at the table (Women’s table) my guess she won’t have the choice. Actually her choice will be either compete in the women’s finals or not at all.
At least that’s my opinion on the matter.

Just curious but what makes Steph Torres feel like she can go against what Nathen’s wants to do? I’m not saying she couldn’t cuz she definitly has potential, but especially being her MLE debut, she hasn’t proven to much as far has head-to-head competion.
I really doubt the MLE will allow this, it kinda undermines the whole purpose of creating a womens devision in the first place. It seems that all Torres is interested in is $$ prizes, not for the fun of competeing. And also, if she does persue it, I think thats pretty disrespectful towards all the other women eaters (Sonya, Juliet) because that basically is undermineing them and saying “I’m better then you and the womens leauge.”
Steph is no doubt a great eater, but I think she’s jumping the gun WAY to much. Beat some big names first.

PA, is well represented by a lot of good IFOCE/MLE eaters… Actually I would say if competitive eaters were ranked by state it would be second.
1st – CA
2nd – PA
3rd – IL

I am just now taking a look at this… and would like to say. I never said I was better than anyone. All I mentioned was that it would be fun to be at the same table as the guys just once. Nothing for the money. All that know me have realized I’m a free spirit and enjoy the adventure. I don’t even think I can reach Sonya’s or Juliet’s numbers at the moment. It would just be awesome eating at the same table with them. (It would be pretty cool to come close to them, but I don’t see that happening this soon). I see nothing wrong with a women’s division. If anything I believe more women will not be intimidated going against men now, thus, have more women competing. There are pros and cons to every situation or idea. (honestly, I didn’t even expect to make it to CI this time around, hopefully one day, but was just taking sight of being able to attend a fun event since it worked out in my schedule)

i am not calling you out but this is what i find on the MLE site.
” The male and female champions from each qualifier will earn a trip to compete in the ESPN televised finals at the original Nathan’s Famous in Coney Island on July Fourth, provided they eat no fewer than 10 hot dogs in competition. ”
That would seem to me when i read it as long as a woman eats more than all the other women at the qualifier and more than 10 she has a spot. I also know rules can be bent or changed at any time.
Go get’em Stephanie. Good luck.

I dunno who’s doubting stephanie, or is nay-saying, but i really dont think anyone who knows Stephanie would say all she cares about is money, or that she’s egotistical by any means.
She didn’t make any claims shes better then anyone or anything, and honestly, i dont even think these claims of attempting to compete with the men are ever her own doing….
Either way, tomarrow Torres will be eatin more HDB’s then any of these neg. commet low-lifes’ could ever eat. Period. Exclamation Mark.

I personally think Steph Torres is one phenomenal eater judging by the videos I’ve seen and what she can put down , so it wouldn’t surprise me to see her win tomorrow’s Vegas Qualifier and move on to NY .. I hope I can make it past the Calgary Qualifier , who else in Canada is joining me in this one?

I don’t blame.Stephanii for wanting to compete with the men how many women beside Juliet sonya and larell are going to fill the table? Not many. Requirement should be 5 hot dogs and.buns instead of 10

Stephanie you come across as though you think you are better than you are. You are right about one thing, it is not about money. Choosing to not go against the IFOCE women is a convenient way to stay undefeated .

According to the prize breakdown the Shea’s think all women are worthless & don’t deserve more than 1/4 of the men’s prize. I’m protesting the hell out of Nathans Kobi style!!!!! F U Shea brothers – self rightous sons a bitches!!!!

You people are jumping the gun before it goes off. Lets see how she does today unless she has last minute cold feet. If she eats between 20& 25 and wins then it makes no sense for her to give up the winning spot in the womans division and go against the male competition in the finals. She would get her butt kicked by shoudt chestnut bertoletti janus and maybe a few others. I think she cares more about the pride of beating male competition than anything else. If she comes close to sonya totals then its quite clear that she would compete in the womans diviision and try to win first prize. This is a win win for Sonya .She cannot catch Joey Shout or Pat so whats the point of her competing against the men for the umpteenth time. . Better off taking the easy 5grand . If you look at the overall picture in the newly formed womans division it boils down to this. Sonya in a blowout Juliet Stephanie Torrez fighting for second place. Larell Marie 4th Stephanie Wu if she decides to compete 5th . Forget about finding female eaters that can eat 10 hot dogs. You might find one out of all the qualifiers There it is in a nutshell . . Good luck

Stephanie Torres has a life outside of competitive eating. Eating stuff is just a passing interest to her whereas to certain other female eaters Nathans and eating is their life. I think you know who i am referring to

I think ya’ll are reading Stephanie wrong! She is not egotistical at all and not about the $. Her views are to have as much fun doing what she’s good at and ALWAYS have a good time. Hey, if I had the ability to eat like her, I’d prob wanna give the men’s division a try as well
But, since I don’t, I will more than happily compete for a seat at the women’s table! Go Steph and lotsa luck 2day

On the MLE site, it says this about Pat Bertoletti:
http://www.ifoce.com/rankings.php?action=detail&sn=105
” Most recently, Pat ate 67 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes ”
Not sure if this was for Nathans though.
