Hall Hunt wins JAX qualifer, “Rubber Gut” 2nd

KrystalSquareOff.com has the top 5 of today’s qualifier:

jaxkrystalcaptures.jpg 1. Hall Hunt 49
2T. Elizabeth “Rubber Gut” Canady 38 (just 4 off Sonya’s female first time Krystal record of 42)
2T. Tim Brown, 38
4. Juliet Lee, 35
5T. Scott Schnipper, 23
5T. Geno “The Dominator” Duncan 23

I think this is the first time women have occupied half of the top 4 of an IFOCE contest.

Jacksonville.com has an article about the contest

FirstCoastNews.com also has an article with a video (click on the thumbnail above for some captures from it)

Backstage, after the event in Jacksonville, Juliet Lee announced that she is considering retirement. Time to look for a new profession she said.

My congrats to Super Paul on winning the Old Fart Hose Head Contest. Just glad to have been able to get away from the event before my reversal of fortune.

Congrats to all who braved and competed in the extreme heat and humidity. After driving 100 miles in an air conditioned car my shirt is still dripping wet.

Time for this Old Fart to take out his false teeth and relax back in his rocking chair. Tomorrow I go back undercover with the Police Department and as the “Arresting Officer”, go after some more law breakers.

Again, CONGRATS to Hall Hunt on your victory.

According to some reports from members of the audience they dispute the tie for second place. They all say they saw Rubber Gut stuff 5 hamburgers in her mouth at the last seconds and took at three out of her mouth after it was over. The members of the audience, many sitting in the front row, are only saying what they saw.

Just for historical accuracy, Juliet Lee holds the female 2-minute record- she ate 14 Sunday afternoon. Krystal should update their site.

I used to chat with Hall online way before he ever put up these type of numbers. He told me he was determined to become a great eater and i believed him. He is a devout Christian and a super athlete in other sports besides competitive eating. This man runs 40 miles or more per week which might consist of 20 miles in one day. . That alone is enough to give you an appetite of 50 people . You dont find many like Hall Hunt. he is a not only an asset to the sport but a great all around individual .

Maybe i should have made myself clearer. I dont mind praising someone on occasion for a job well done and this is the perfect forum for testimonials. What i will not do is engage in meaningless trivial bullshit with alias’s and anonmyous’s that have one goal in mind and that goal is “irritate” . I have other matters to tend to aside from becoming a Rhonda Evans or a Luther . Not a knock on Rhonda for she is well informed and shows great interest in the sport , but for me to argue back and forth in long text about who is a better eater Joey or Pat or how many sandwiches this one is going to eat or what the aice has accomplished blah blah, serves no purpose at all. I mean who gives a shit? Matter of fact it would defeat the entire purpose of my website . If you want to hear me bitch and moan go to bits and pieces. This is OJ’s site i dont want to rain on his parade.

I don’t want her to retire. I am sad to hear that such a thought even entered Juliet’s mind.

Back in 2004 eating Krystals in the mid-30s was good enough to win a qualifier. There’s no doubt that Juliet can eat 40 Krystals, and I think she still has a shot at being at the final table. It’s all based on who shows up where.

Juliet can’t retire…she’s got too many fans! Losing is never easy (I should know), especially when the stakes are so high and you travel so far to compete. She’ll bounce back.

Good job to Hall. And who is this Elizabeth Canady? Does anyone know anything about her? Does she intend to compete regularly in IFOCE events? That’s pretty exciting stuff to see a woman come out of nowhere like that to put some pressure on a top-ranked eater.

I know of at least 3 top 20 IFOCE eaters considering switching to the AICE due to the political bulls*** that goes on with IFOCE contests. those contests are staring to look more and more like WWE contests….where the winner is pre-determined

  17. Rhonda Evans said

    September 4, 2007 @ 10:17 am

I don’t think any IFOCE winners are predetermined. If people leave the IFOCE one of the likely reasons is that it’s so hard to finish in the money when the same people win/dominate over and over.

The IFOCE needs to prevent this from happening by offering payouts to at least the top seven or eight finishers in each event.

Talkin about politiical bullshit. Shitty or low ranked eaters or the eaters the ifoce dont like get more food in their trays then the ones they want to win. Of course the winner is pre determined . Wake up and smell the coffee. When they tell you i want you to sit in this specific chair it means the trays are marked. Everybody should quit then you see how fast they be beggin for people to come back.

I’m hoping it’s just the heat of the moment as far as Juliet is concerned. She’s come very far in a year, and it would be a shame to lose her.

As far as the same people always winning, it’s a function of them being THAT GOOD. The top IFOCE eaters dont need a lightened tray to win….I mean have you ever been to a contest? Bob & Sonya have proved them selves time and again.

My goal is not to get Tripled. If I pull that off than it was a good day. Hopefully by next year I’ll have improved enough to not get Lapped at all. Other people have fantasies soley of winning money, those people will likely leave after a year. It’s truly the big leagues, and you have to be content with reaching your own personal goals, otherwise you’re better off in a smaller pond.

I think you are completely right. The IFOCE plans it all out. They definitely give the person they want to win less food. The IFOCE even went so far as to have Krystal cook up smaller than usual buns and put them in little teeny boxes on minuture size trays for Hall Hunt so he could win in his hometown. I bet those special made boxes and trays are real collectors items and would sell for a ton of money on eBay.

The bottle of super-glue next to my tray also made me suspicious, along with the trace of Drain-O I seemed to taste in each bite. My tray was marked “Don’t give to Sonya”. I just chalked it all up to my usual incompetence, but the next day was tough in the bathroom. YOMP!!

As most know, I like most all the independent eaters. But the tone that is used on the site is ridiculous. I’ve cut-and-pasted this from the recent news involving the J-vill Krystal Qualifier.

“9/5/07- Rubber-Gut Canady sets new burger standard for two minute-Is Elizabeth “Rubber-gut” Canady the best female eater in America?

In only her second attempt at speed eating Elizabeth “Rubber Gut” Canady broke the two minute minute record for the consumption of hamburger appetizers/ Hors D’oeuvres by consuming 13 palm sized hamburgers in only 2 minutes on Saturday, September 2nd, 2007 in Jacksonville Florida. Rubber-Gut went on to the semifinals on Labor Day to take 2nd place among a group of well known “food drinkers” finishing with 38 appetizers in only eight minutes. It has been reported by the Food Drinking Association (also known as MLE) that Ms. Canady was only four Hors D’oeuvres from tying Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas’s record of 42 appetizers. The well credentialed South Korean National is regarded as the best female food drinker in the world by most. Juliet Lee, who was regarded as America’s best female Food Drinker was reported to have announced her retirement after the thrashing she took from Rubber Gut. Many folks in the competitive eating community have already crowned this sensational eater “Queen Gutress.”

    Is the author insane?

    Rhonda,

    I don’t see ANYTHING that’s untrue.

Krystals themselves reported that the 13 was a female record.

The ifoce does essentially drink there food.

The burgers are so tiny, that they should be considered apps. I understand that Sonya has done more than 42, but that was recent (this year)wasn’t it?

Sonya is originally from South Korea.

There may be some slight exagerations, but nothing the $i$ters wouldn’t hype themselves.

I’m not saying that Rubber Gut is as good as Sonya. Time will tell on that, BUT she has made a big enough splash to be in the conversation, & she did beat Juliet, who’s already been in the conversation.

Besides Rhonda, am I the only person who sees what’s wrong with that AICE statement? Sonya’s Krystal record is not 42 but 62. Sonya Thomas ate 13 Krystals in the first minute of her most recent contest. Do any of you indepemdents think she could not eat at least 20 or more in 2 minutes? Was her Pizza contest from last month where she ate 20 slices of 18-inch pizza a dunking contest? Hell no! She and Bertoletti both broke Bertoletti’s record of 19 from last year. Are her Egg or Oyster records through dunking? I don’t think so. Not only is Sonya a laugher of an idea better than Canady, Hell no! Their names should not even be put in the same sentence.

As an exclamation point, ‘d like to see Sonya compete against Arnie, Menchetti, Invader, or any other Arnie butt kisser in any nondunking food in a contest of 8 minutes or more. Better yet, be thankful that you two don’t have to share the table with Kobayashi, Chestnut, or Bertoletti. Your totals would be doubled in virtually any contest you can name.

    Damn!

APE runs their website like an opinionated blog and not like a business. They should reduce the amount of misleading, defamitory and inflamitory material there and take this as seriously as their eaters do.

  34. Rhonda Evans said

    September 6, 2007 @ 8:16 am

Thanks for the comments Ian. I agree about there being nothing wrong with being creative. I totally agree with that — as long as those comments are accurate and not intended to be hurtful towards others and / or mixed with falsehoods. (i.e. Sonya’s LOWEST total is 42. Her RECORD is 62.)

What gets me is that Sonya has never uttered a bad word about the AICE or one of its eaters — ever, as far as I know. Conversely, I find the rhetoric and tone used on that site to not only be misleading, but presented in an inflammatory, mean-spirited, ill-intended tone.

Incidentally, I never see the IFOCE take aim at a single independent eater on any of its five sites. Regardless of my not liking some of their other actions, that one quality alone of not berating eaters in a rival organization sets them WAY above the organization that takes such an approach.

Joe, my asp-like blog aquaintenance, I do find it heartening that after one “dose” of eating with you, Elizabeth immediately bolted to an event run by the people that you despise. Frankly, I believe the IFOCE thanks Chapman for touting their newly aquired talent. Arnie, “Queen Guttress” is an OUTSTANDING suggestion for a moniker. Thanks! I hope she uses it. 🙂

I wish nothing but the best to Sonya, Juliet, and Elizabeth.

By some figment of his imagination he still believes that that the IFOCE and his whatever should unite or his posse should recieve praise and acclaim by the Shea’s .I keep making the same point time after time and it goes in one ear and out the other. If you try to step on the Shea’s territory you become the enemy or a non entity as far as they are concerned .

    Farooq, I don’t kiss anyone’s butt. If I did i’d still be w/ifoce.

I might be able to take her in some things 8 minutes or more, but she would likely beat me most of the time above 8 minutes.

Joe name a single food that you could whip Sonya in in 5 minutes. Perhaps 4 years ago a month or two after she started eating you might have had a chance of beating Sonya in a couple of contests of only four or five minutes, but since then you’ve remained at roughly the same talent level while her speed has improved greatly. She would probably be very insulted for someone to accuse her of being able to eat less than 60 eggs in 5 minutes. I doubt you could eat 44.

She, Humble Bob, and Chip Simpson would mop the floor up with you in most any contest involving different foods in four minutes. Forget the dunking too. It’s not needed. I wish the IFOCE would take off the harness so she could help further reveal just how much of an active imagination you have. I bet that even Rubbergut would beat you half the time.

I ask you, who else can pull off being introduced to the massive crowd by Mr. Shea before the contest begins and coming out cheers and applause while dressed in a Jamaican shirt, a Hangman Championship Wrestling Belt around his waist and wearing a chicken on his head. At least that should give me a couple votes for Super Paul’s Year End Best Dressed List. Maybe next time I’ll try a kilt with the chicken hat?

SB that’s a most thoughtful point and one I want to add to. The mudslinging tactics that are used at the APE (appropriate acronym) Web site have surely backfired the last several years, and I think part of the reason is that potential sponsors do exactly what you profess: they go to the MLE Web site(s) and compare the journalistic professionalism displayed in both organizations. MLE wins hands down, and would even if the eaters in the two orgs were swapped.

Most all of the independent eaters’ Web sites / Web pages could be used as examples for the keepers / editors of the APE site. The eaters’ sites very rarely engage in interorganizational pie throwing and you can even detect a degree of respect for other eaters’ accomplishments, regardless of organizational affiliation. Isn’t that the way it’s supposed to be.

IIt would also be nice to see more of the top IFOCE eaters follow suit by recognizing the accomplishments of some of their independent brethren, but unfortunately, they are likely pressured by the IFOCE Chairman and President to refrain from doing so, but with good reason.

As a matter of fact, if I remember correctly, I almost fell over a few years ago when Sonya displayed a link to both speedeat.com (run by viper-like “Gentleman” Joe — how in the hell did he get that nickname?), as well as competitiveeaters.com. But after only a week or two the link was removed, most assuredly as a result of pressure from the Sheas.

However, because of the outright lies and mudslinging that was printed on those two sites towards both the IFOCE and several of its eaters, by name, to include Sonya herself, one can hardly blame the IFOCE for imposing that pressure. (As BB has alluded to, once you get on their wrong side, it’s next to impossible to revert back to their good graces.)

I think there are several lessons from all this for both organizations, especially the APE.

Hey Joe, I like your statement regarding the prospect of you and Sonya eating together, “I would take her most of the time in 5 minutes or less.”

Joe, I hope and pray that something can be worked out, so that you and her can eat several 5 minute contests together. Remember, however, that she’s just a little frail girl with very limited talent in the shorter contests, so when you apply your incomprehensible eating prowess and win, please don’t run up your totals too much over hers, so that she can save face.

Would you do that for me buddy?

    Rhonda,
Like many of the new post-cessesion eaters, I dont have bad blood with the AICE roster. Most of us got involved in CE for similar reasons and just wound up with different Orgs.

Having heard the backstory and looking how the website is run, I am shocked that they can land any contracts with National Chains. As a presumably cheaper option to the IFOCE they have many opportunities and it’s frustrating to see that they would lace Front Page real estate with toxic jabs at their oppositions roster.

While a sponsor will just be confused, CE eaters know that Chapman is purposely designating Juliet Lee as ‘The Top American Female’ and Sonya as a ‘Korean National’. What purpose does that serve to be hurtful and personal? Do you see Coca Cola bashing the President of Pepsi on their site? No! and you wont even find a mention of Pepsi or their products there. Thats fodder for Boardroom planning.

Clearly this guy is obsessed with the IFOCE (‘All Pro Eaters suddenly after the IFOCE debuts ‘Major League Eaters’) and until he is removed or contained, he will be a speed bump to legitimacy. While I admire that he was able to spin off and launch an organization, I cant respect a person with that much willfull damage to this Community. I’ve given constructive criticism before on AICE and he logged in with some sort of Homo-Phobic-Erotic fantasy/accusation….not the kind of person I would want at the helm.

I think comedy and lightness are ok for the official site, but personal vendettas have no place.

It is my understanding that there wasn’t an opportunity for Joe in Nashville. One, because Joe had to sign a waiver against it, and two, because even though he won the prequals, he wasn’t listed as an eligble contestant in the qualifiers.
Rhonda, I am not going to argue that there may or may not be a slight spin in one or two of the news articles on AICE, but I think that the accusations of any of it being racist, or demeaning towards any other eaters is completely false, and is derived from anonymous posters on this site, just like other rumors going around that are also being dispelled. When Sonya was listed as a Korean national, that wasn’t a racist statement. It is obvious what the intent was, to establish Juliet Lee as the favorite american female eater. I didn’t see anything that should offend Sonya except the out of date record listed, and that isn’t offensive, just a mistake.

    Rhonda,

I was NOT given that opportunity. I was NOT included on the list of entrants on Krystal.com

I believe its still up, you can check it out yourself.

After Hbob put up 39 in 2 minutes, I fully expected him to beat me. Frankly, I thought he might break Kobe’s record in 8 minutes.

I was a bit surprised he “only” put up 69. If he gave his all (which I doubt, since he won by 30) I may have beaten him. That’s not important. What is imporant is, I much more than likely would have put up a # good enough to end up as a wildcard.

If my return flight was at 8:45pm instead of 6:45 out of Memphis, (a 3:30hr drive from Nashville) I would have shown up inspite of not being included.

Rhonda, didn’t Boone spank Sonya as well as Booker & Jarvis in short contests?! Didn’t I just spank that hillbilly b*st*rd?? Most of you think I spanked him twice. I also put up the 3rd highest # in 2 minute Krystals at the time, in my 1st attempt. [probably only attempt)

So, maybe you want to stop chuckling about my 5 minutes or less comments re: Sonya.

To answer some other commenter, if this was planned, it would have been planned alot better.

Thank you, Mike Landrich, Ian & whomever else has shown support.

Joe I knew you’d bring up Boone spanking Sonya that one time when he was the only competitor to “find” a jug of water to cool his beans, which was not available to any other competitor. Now list the times she spanked him — you’d need all 10 fingers and toes.

Also, remember that the 84 Lumber people had to change the 8.4 lbs to 84 ounces, because at the inaugural contest, Sonya was done with her beans in 2 minutes 47 seconds. No one else present could finish theirs in less than 10 minutes. So that should better put things in perspective.

I believe you would definitely be a wild card in Krystals Joe, I think you could eat about 40 – 44, which will be wild card territory for sure.

Joe, to be honest, I bet Sonya would quickly admit that events less than 5 minutes are not her forte, and that you would win your fair share of them against her. I just like giving you a hard time to make up for you doing that to her in the past.

If you didn’t visit this site, I’d be bored silly.

    Rhonda,
I am addressing this to you instead of Joe because I do not think he would understand the logic.
Is it not true that the only reason Joe may have a halfway decent # in the 2 minute qualifier, compared to the others who have competed, is because most all of the top eaters don’t attempt the 2 minute qualifier. Is he blind to the fact that his 2 min. # is mostly compared to locals or rookie eaters. I believe that every top 10 eater in the IFOCE could beat Joe in the 2 minute Krystal qualifier. This said, I also think he hits a wall at 2 minutes and is nearly at capacity where the top 10 IFOCE eaters could continue on well through the 8 minute mark and only extend their lead and could most likely continue past the 8 minute mark while Joe is left sick at the table after the 2 minutes.

Ban him, he called someone a bad name. Also Hill Billies every where are offended.

Joe P.S. your dillusional if you think you even had a small chance of beating “Humble” Bob shoudt. He could have stopped eating looked for a toilet took a pi$$ and came back and still won the contest.

    Rhonda,

If Boone was the only one who cooled there beans, why did Sonya come in 3RD!!

    Doesn’t anyone remember Randy Harrison??

Sorry to remind you of your selective historical viewpoint.

Were the beans too hot for Booker & Jarvis too? Did Boone hoarde the water in those contests too?

She did spank him in many other events. They were over 5 minutes.

There is no way Janus knows that much history off the top of his head. From prior recent comments, I know you’re not Rona, so are you Hank or Sonya herself?!

40-44??? Are you high? I would literally bet MY LIFE that i would do more than that.

So what’s the point? If you like it sign it. If you don’t don’t. Look at your organization and look at theirs. If AICE is so great, why does the organization not sell itself? You’ve been using the contract as an issue for years now. Look where your organization is. Look where MLE is? Case closed.

Do you know Chapman’s gripes? Have you ever asked him why he dislikes the IFOCE and it’s willing stoogies? Of course not. When you post info about his anger, resentment, etc.. it’s usually fair to know and understand why. The fact of the matter is that you are clueless. If you called the author of this posting (You know who I am) I would respectfully tell you why (and perhabs I would apoligize for some negative references I made) However, when I attempted to tell you on this website what they were you simply said you did not want to hear my complaints. I don’t particularly care that you know my complaints, but when you start writting the BS you just posted I need to check you on that.

Yeah I remember Randy Harrison too. He got a big head after his second place finish to Boone in beans. Did he drop off the face of the earth? The last time I remember seeing him was when he got smoked royally in another short contest in the first round of the US Open. Sonya got smoked too, but it wasn’t until the final round against Kobayashi.

Rhonda’s knowledge of history is gleaned from websites. When she first started posting, she wasn’t as knowledgable as she is now. She hasn’t been on the eating scene as long as you guys think she has. She just reads stuff that’s readily available everywhere. Don’t give her more credit than she deserves.

You’re right, I really know very little except for what I read on the more credible Websites — those maintained by MLE, its eaters, and the independent eaters themselves. They need new organizational leadership. APE is ripe for change.

Eric, I have to give Joe the benefit of the doubt in 2-minute contests. I think that in such short events, such as Krystals, the only people in the MLE top 10 that would eat more than him are Koby, Joey, Pat, and Bob. Joe would probably smoke the rest in 2 minutes, at least in Krystals.

However, I fail to even see how a 2-minute event could rate being called a contest. It would be like a 1/4-mile Kentucky Derby; it just doesn’t make sense. It’s just an exhibition for the kiddies who have a short attention span.

I do agree with you, however, that after 4 minutes Joe would have shot his proverbial Krystal-eating wad. That’s why Joe loves contests of only 3 or 4 minutes. He has no where near the stomach capacity of any eater in the MLE top 10. In a contest of 8 minutes or more, he’s dead meat.

Pat Bertoletti and Joey Chestnut are such great eaters that they could eat more Krystals in 5 minutes than Joe could in 12. I really don’t care if that’s true or not, however, I just want to screw with his head — but he knows I’m spot on if he’s honest with himself. 🙂
