Joey Chestnut wins Waffle House contest

Joey Chestnut wins the Waffle House contest in suburban Atlanta with 18.5 waffles beating Sonya Thomas by half a waffle. This is the first victory for Joey Chestnut over Sonya Thomas after several close defeats. Joey Chestnut gave half his $5,000 first place prize to hurricane Katrina relief. Patrick Bertoletti finished 3rd with 11 waffles. Sonya Thomas will have the chance to obtain one victory this extended holiday weekend when she competes in the Krystal burger qualifier in Chattanooga on Labor Day.

In other contests this weekend, Cookie Jarvis won the Buffalo Wing Festival “Buffet Bowl” contest and Rich LeFevre won the Colorado Grilled Cheese qualifier with 21 sandwiches. Ron Koch finished second with 19 sandwiches.

I only managed 7 waffles, but I had a great time at the event and enjoyed seeing everyone that showed up. I thought everyone did pretty well. Congrats to Joey on his 2nd world title.

I have heard that Sonya did get her win this weekend in Krystals. I have heard from a fairly reliable source that Sonya ate 57 and Joey ate 56 Krystal Burgers. It looks as though the bar has been set much higher than last year when the totals from the finals were Takeru 69, Sonya 46, and Rich 41. Well, much higher except Takeru.

Aside from Mr Chestnut, has any other eater parted with a dime from their prize winnings to donate to the hurricane disaster? Brian Subich took money out of his own pocket according to his website donating 50 cents for each chicken wing he ate. That was a class act in my book!

    Mr. Negativity,

Your name is fitting. Perhaps some people donate to a central fund like the Combined Federal Campaign. Perhaps some people can’t afford to donate. Perhaps their donations are not monetary. Additionally, many people don’t publicize charity contributions … they shouldn’t have to. As such, I will not ask you how much you have given, because it is not a question that deserves an answer. It is private.

None of your damn business how much iv’e given. How much have you given? Hmm ? Hmm? If its not monetary its not a donation in my book. Combined federal campaigns go into the pockets of politicians and shady bueraucrats. I enjoy being negative and thats the way i go about living. If its upsetting to you then go take a course in the power of positive thinking .

    Mr. Negativity,

I believe I have you trumped in the education (courses taken) category–you don’t even want to go there. Anyway, we need to get back to addressing competitive eating, which is why most good folks visit this site. Be as negative as you want, if that’s what floats your boat. But if you don’t want to address competitive eating you are serving no purpose. Let’s not waste peoples’ time with side issues. Nothing further needs to be said on this.
