the liveblog of the program follows after the jump

2:30 The bowling match (from the Brewers stadium in Milwaukee) should not run over by very much.

2:35 The Krystal broadcast starts with a mention of Kobayashi’s jaw issues. Bertoletti is mentioned next. A list of 100+ sports performances is displayed on screen and the question is raised if that total will be reached.

2:38 Holly Rowe is the sideline reporter. She appears near Chestnut and Bertoletti without interviewing them. The record between them is claimed to be 19-7.

2:39 A flashback of Chestnut’s career highlights is then displayed. Bertoletti is interviewed briefly.

2:40 A commercial break and an ad for Krystal runs.

2:42 Back from commercial with a history of Krystal, which got its name from the china plates its burgers were originally served on.

2:43 The burgers are shown cooking. 120 burgers will be cooked for all competitors.

Unbelieveable push by Joey and an awesome job by Bob! Huge improvement for him over his past #’s.

While Humble Bob has obviously made himself into a great eater, while viewing the square off, it appeared as though he was eating 1/2 to 2/3rds of every burger.

I would PAY to see that debris pile.

This is NOT an accusation of cheating. If you can get away with eating 60% of a food item, more power to you!

If I thought I could pull that off in an aice event, I would.

Watching the up close shots on ESPN one can see plenty of debris falling out of many hands and mouths. By the looks of things so much debris came from some of the top eaters that if all picked up it would make enough debris to create at least 5 Krystals. But no deductions for some of the top because it would not look good for the TV.

The contest ended with Joey, Pat and Bob. When they came back from commercial it showed Joey with one more added, now 103 and the totals for Pat and Bob reversed now showing Bob with 95 and Pat with 94.

I noticed the Pat/Bob discrepancy too. Great job by all 3 of the top guys. At for the debris. I’d love to see a picnic rule competition, just as a basleine for comparison.

Crazy Legs got fourth? Watching him I’ll say that if he would wash his beard and dreadlocks tonight that he would find enough debris in there to have a large meal for his trip back to NY.

It’s bad when the camera is that close and shows the truth to the world.

Congrats to everyone who made it on the stage.

Sonya’s counter had posted a ridiculously large total of nearly 40 after 2 minutes, yet updated her total on a delayed basis minute by minute. I will never watch this shit again!

Until recently, i’ve given them the benefit of the doubt with the lack of attention to detail, but I now believe it’s just a “Dog & Pony Show” to them for the sponser ..if it benefits you i’m sure you have no problem with it, but it’s a disservice to the truely “Competitive” eaters!

I was there. I went onstage & looked at debris piles myself. They were all very comparable. Very little slop for those numbers. Joey stopped eating at 97, smiled at the crowd, & cruised to 103. If he ate full force, I bet he would’ve gotten 115. Pat’s 94 and Bob’s 95 are legit, altho for live TV, they mandated they clear within 30 seconds of end of contest. It took Humble Bob 20-30 sec longer to clear than Pat. Does that mean Pat could’ve shoved 1-2 more Krystals & cleared in same time? Either way, great contest. I will be in it next year.
Other totals (from stage & eaters themselves)
    Janus-75
    Lefevre-53
    Hunt-52
    Denmark-45
    Conti-45
    Lee-44
    Brown-38
    Goldstein-35
Didn’t get Sonya or Chips, but I think the were in the 50s.

I can’ take it anymore. Pat from Moonachie stop bitching about everything already!!! You’re not a contender. You’re 16th. When you’re top 10, you can start complaining. TV is GOOD for competitive eating. MLE has to deal with Krystal & ESPN. The only way competitive eating is going to gain popularity is by getting it in front of the masses. Sometimes, that is very difficult. Have u ever been on a TV set? I have, and there are about a billion things that go into it.
As for the Spike thing, that’s TV ENTERTAINMENT. There were no qualifiers. The top eaters got invited (contenders), then us (characters). I may not be that good yet, but I’m just getting started and I was there to get America talking about CE. THAT’S how CE is going to get big cash prizes, legitimacy, and media coverage. Not from your incessant whining.

I was also dumbfounded by Crazy Legs’ numbers and the absence of Eater X from the top five. However, from the looks of it, the counters were f’ed up. That’s too bad. Seriously, how hard is it to get that kind of stuff right?

Congrats to Joey. Crushing the record. A great end to a great CE season.

Dr. Bigtime, “Legitimacy” is what CE loses if they treat eaters ranked 10-20 differently then eaters ranked 1-10 the world already has a fake sport, it’s called “Professional Wrestling” and like I said, if you benefit from it (you’re ranked 23rd, right??) then I see why you have no problem with it ..and as for my “incessant whining” as you like to call it, i’ve been in the I.F.O.C.E. for over 3 years and i’ve never complained about anything so I don’t exactly have a reputation as a “Whiner” so if you don’t like my recent criticisms, that’s “Tough Shit” …how ya like them apples??

…P.S. Did you get America talking about CE yet?? …*cricket* *cricket*

  18. mike landrich said

    October 28, 2007 @ 5:59 pm

Legitimacy is lost whenever the “chosen few” benefit from what appears to be favoritism. Have you ever noticed that, despite a supposedly anonymous registration system, there is usually only 1 top eater at a qualifier for Nathan’s or Krystals. It looks like IFOCE wants them to get an easy qualification and then wait for the finals. Whining is different than observing and commenting upon.

  19. beautifulbrian said

Great contest . Everyone ate their hearts out . I commend them for a job well done. Pat if you think eaters ranked 10-20 get the shaft how do you think the bottom of the barrel ranked eaters feel. The sad part is that narrow minded people base one’s eating ablility on how the IFOCE ranks them. Kevin Carr is ranked 45 and Brian is ranked 43 and that means they cant eat for shit. That is not fair at all. If they let me compete and stop shutting me out of events i can still put up decent numbers. . Iv’e competed with the best and beat the best at one point in my career and they know damn well i dont deserve to be 41 or 42 or whatever the number is. Do you think i check? I will give them some credit because they have improved somewhat on who should be ranked ahead of who but there is much room for improvement. Dr Bigtime is a great inspiration and role model for any eater or anyone for that matter that is not in great physical shape. This man can operate on human beings, he lifts weights, he can pick up any chick he wants, and most important he takes pride in the way he looks. I think Pat has somewhat of a legit beef. Its obvious he’s been fucked over because of his weight or because they still hold a grudge over the eggnog bath video. Pat i dont like to use the term misery loves company but now you know what i go through and others that have been fucked over day in and day out.

So you’re been in the IFOCE for 3 years. I just looked at your contest history, about 20 contests. Let’s take hot dogs. From 2005 to 2007, you went from 20.5, to 23, to 24. Wow. I got 20.5 this year. I hope I can get to 24 in 2009. You’re really advancing the sport. They should definitely put you on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

In the same period, Chestnut went from 32 to 52 to 66, Bertoletti from nothing to 34 to 49, Janus from 22.5 to 34 to 43.5, Humble Bob from 18 to 30 to 35, and Hunt from 15 to 19 to 29.

You’re right, though. I shouldn’t have said anything. I just can’t stand all this negativity about trying to get CE to the masses. People not involved in CE have enough negative things to say about it. I would hope we could all stand together and push all the positives about our sport.

I’ll let my eating speak from now on.

I must say that as a new fan of competitive eating there seems to be a need for trickery in order to eat a lot. It is really weird that some of the top eaters who have no stomach capacity can up and devour big totals in Krystals. I was watching Joey and that Humble guy, in particular, and it seems to me that they were leaving most of the bun in the cup. Could that be the reason for the big improvement in total quantity eaten in the last few years? Maybe we should watch Humble what’s his name in his next few contests that don’t allow dunking.

  23. Dr. Bigtime said

    October 28, 2007 @ 6:32 pm

And as for IFOCE legitimacy, this year I was 2 short of a wildcard for Krystal, AGAIN! I’ll be honest. I BEGGED them for a spot (Koby’s not there, I’ll be good for TV, etc). They DID NOT give me a spot, because the Krystal contest is a REAL IFOCE CONTEST, and that would break the integrity of the sport. I’ll earn it next year, like me and everyone else should.

I’m more annoyed about people complaining about the Spike thing because that was FOR TV. I don’t even know if the placings there have any impact on legitimate rankings. There was definitely pride involved, and they did all the weighings and things properly, but I don’t think it has any impact on my rank or anyone else’s.

That’s great they followed the rules.

It takes a big set of balls to say you called them a beg for his spot. A spot you did not even deserve if they were going to give the spot away.

Why becuase they threw you a bone to be on Spike TV.

  32. Dr. Bigtime said

    October 28, 2007 @ 8:09 pm

“Begged” is probably not the correct term. After I choked at the Birmingham qualifier, I talked to some of the IFOCE and Krystal people there, and asked them to see if they could get me a spot. That was also when I thought Koby and Sonya were both not going to be there, hence 2 spots. I didn’t call anyone. When I found out Sonya was coming, I knew it wasn’t going to happen. It was more like wishful thinking on my part. It would’ve been great to be up there, but now I don’t want to just “be up there.” I want to be at least top 10. I didn’t feel that way until recently. Before, I was just a guy who could eat a lot. Now, it’s for real.

While you’re looking up stats Dr. Bigtime, look up Allen “Shredder” Goldstein & Crazy Leg Conti’s Nathan’s numbers, you’ll find it’s not quite as easy as you seem to think it is, to jump 10+ HDB’s in a year or two. FYI, I won the Molly Pitcher Nathan’s qualifier with 27 HDB’s … I hope you’re more thorough in your medical practice!

Crazy Legs is a well spoken “Character” and good for the sport too, but he’s busted his balls to get to the level he’s at and has earned what he’s gotten …i’m not suprised that you begged them for a spot in Krystals, saying “I’ll be good on TV!” (hey, it worked for Spike!) You seem to want the “BIGTIME” without quite earning it yet…. us “losers” can’t wait to see you on the cover on Sports Illustrated!

BTW, Congtats Joey! …and everyone else did a super job too!

It was a fun time….nice to see and meet Juris’s family, finally meeting Liz and Erik the Red, and If you’re reading this, special thanks to Juliet, Crazy Legs, and Gravy for my gifts!! I also enjoyed leisurely eating Krystals without dunking them, and getting almost all my predictions pretty close, except for the sensational Shoudt showing. Krystal people are the greatest, and the crowd was humongous, and the most vocal I’ve heard.

The only real downer was everyone had to leave quick (since it was Sunday), so no after-party!! That was ESPN making the call for a Sunday show, Krystal wanted it on a Saturday, but, network money trumps all….

Gravy Brown, Chip the Turtle, Mr. Conti, Eater X, Hall Hunt, all made strong fashion statements, and gained valuable points in the race for the second-half of 2007 Best Dressed Eaters list. Last but not least, 103……Joey, you are number 1, without question!!

Dr BT, I’m not sure if you were being fecious or not when you comment on ifoce/mle contests having integrity.

I’m not saying they are fixed, but the people who are supposed to win, usually do. There is an obvious slant to those at the top.

There have been too many “mistakes” for these occurances to truly be mistakes.

I’m sure if Moonachie or The Scum, ate in a similar fashion to those that were eating half their burger,(by no means was it just HB, he was just the most glaring example on tv in my ONE viewing) they would have been DQ’d.

If they followed things accurately, The Scum & I would have been allowed to compEAT in the regional finals for the square off.

I’m sorry if I missed it, I don’t follow CE nearly as much as I used to, but wasn’t Sonya given a spot?? Did she even attempt to qualify?

BB, love your site, BUT give it up already. You got lucky ONCE. Outside of 5 minutes i’m not sure you can beat my 11 yr old son. While you are ok as an announcer/commentator, you are not in the same league as C-legs & the sisters.

Congratulations to all the finalists in the Krystal contest. Looks like you all put on a great show and put up some fantastic numbers to boot.

and thanks to beautifulbrian for posting the contest so everyone can easily see it. I don’t know if everyone appreciates what he does for the community and what a loss it would be if he shut his site down. I think eatfeats serves a very different perspective than what Brian’s site provides and both are nice having around. When the day comes that Brian no longer enjoys doing it, he should stop. It is not worth it, unless you get pleasure out of it and enjoying putting the pages together.

Sure, he DOES have the ability to get under your skin sometimes, but that is part of Brian’s shtick, as I can surely attest to, from personal experience. 🙂

I think that there have been some mistakes made on all sides with Brian’s recent disputes with eaters and I think the best thing at this point is for all concerned to just forgive and forget an move on. I think in the heat of an argument, things get said that people later feel bad about and that this forum and Brian’s own web site might not be the appropriate places for what should be private matters between two people. I feel badly when mutual friends have this kind of stress between them and wish I could do something.

There is a fine line to walk in trying to have a fun, interesting site and reporting on stuff that can get very personal to those involved. I think as Brian has gotten more experience at doing this, it has been easier for him and he has gotten better at it. This recent very public argument is certainly not my two friends at their best.

If Brian were a complete outsider, ie. the National Enquirer or Star Magazine, with NO ties to the eating community, he would have a lot easier time of reporting what he found out, ie. no remorse, virtually no consequences, but then again he would have less to report on, as no one in their right mind would feed the National Enquirer or Star this kind of gossip, as they know it would be falling into hands that might not care and might report on it improperly.

But getting back to the original thread, I want to congratulate all the eaters again. Anything over 30 is a great number and the fact that it takes over 40 now to qualify is a testament to how great the eaters have become. Eating the century Mark, Joey, that is unbelievable and remarkable. And Bob, where did you come out of, that is a great number and I bet you took everyone by surprise.

And from what I can see in the video, with the crowds and with all the PR surrounding this contest, it looks like George, Rich, Dave, Kate and Ryan and Mark helped Krystal to really get their money’s worth. Looks like everyone came out a winner.

And lastly, I can attest to this personally from when I flew down to Jackson a few years ago for a qualifier that appeared to be taking place in the middle of a cow pasture dressed up as a state fair, the Krystal Co. has really made it so that the burgers are really perfect at the contests, perfectly steamed, even when at remote locations. That trailer they haul around the country with all the custom cooking equipment, ensures perfect burgers at the contests. Sometimes this is not always the case at other contests and in past years, the food has not always been perfect. I think with the generous purse and the attention to the burgers, this is one sponsor that really cares that the eaters are well taken care of.

My prediction was almost correct because Humble Bob almost won the contest. What was the penalty for food in the cups. I saw a lot of bread either drop off or be left in there when the eaters drowned the h-burgers. Sometimes all that was left when they pulled the krystal out was the tiny meat patty but thats probly part of the technique and the eaters were fantastic in using that.

We keep reading Beautiful Brian saying “if only IFOCE would give me a chance. I can win again”.

Watching the NFL play overseas yesterday one saw the New York Giants defeat the Miami Dolphins.

In 1973 and 1974 the Miami Dolphins were great. They won the Super Bowl back to back. Some went so far to say the Dolphins were “beautiful” they were so great.

Now Miami has another chance yet their record is a dismal 0 and 8. They cannot win one game so far.

I use this example because in 1973 and 1974, Miami Dolphins, like Beautiful Brian was Hot and Beautiful. They were a Winner. Now in 2007. Just look at Miami’s 0 and 8 record. It speaks for itself.

    Class dismissed.

With Love from the Record Keeper.

Did everyone read what Kevin just wrote? Those are words of wisdom from someone that attended Cornell Univ. Im not prasing him because he came to my defense . It’s because he speaks the truth. There is a huge difference between an idiot and someone that posseses intelligence. This is also an example of a devoted CE that got screwed over by an organization that at one time required his services the same way they require the services of Crazy Legs and Tim. Sure he let them know how he felt but he never once blasted them in public .If i was running the show i would make sure he maintained an active role in the organization. When i had some minor indifferences with this man it was kept behind closed doors and not spewed over the internet like something out of WWF Vince Mcmahon. Sure you were entertained. I even found it amusing myself but lets see how you feel getting blasted by insults while others sit back and enjoy. It’s one thing to curse out a family member or poke fun at one’s physical ailments as opposed to some trivial remark i made about a dvd or a misquote about the aice. When you stand up for a cause and then all of a sudden decide to back away from it, you come across as a pussy. It’s like the honeymooner episode when Ralph tells his new bowling partner. “What i say about Norton is one thing how i feel about him is another”. If all this animosity is just because the IFOCE didnt return your phonecall then this anger about not being compensated for a dvd was bullshit from the get go. I disagree with Kevin about my site not being the appropriate place for private matters between two people. This matter involved the IFOCE and was related to CE. If it was a business transaction not related to the sport then i can see his point. What is inappropriate is when you read about a Don Lerman sensationalizing all his physical ailments on the front page of his website. If someone is diagnosed with cancer or is involved in a serious accident this is between close friends and family members. I didnt post this commentary on eatfeats or any other CE website. I posted it on my site because people were wondering where the origin of all this animosity was coming from. . I think we’ve exhausted this issue enough. I will try to move on to what i do best and that is to report the latest news in CE and from a personal standpoint put up some respectable numbers in future events.

DUH….if any of you paid attention to the EatCast featuring Chip Simpson, he revealed that his nickname at work is “Turtle”

Was Gravy dressed? They didnt show him in the broadcast.

After seeing the Spike show I think ESPN only gets a C+ for this. The running totals were jumbled, and incorrect. No backstory on any of the eaters except Koby and he wasnt even there.

When the show ended it wasnt clear on Joeys exact number and they switched Bob and Pat a few times and never really told you who had 95 and who had 94.

Krystals is such a great sponsor, and put on such a great contest, I hope they can get a full 1 hour production next year be it at ESPN or Spike. Boy was I starving looking at those burgers. I cant wait til next year!

I don’t know if ESPN is embarrssed that they have this, or they have already decided not to renew whatever it is they have w/the Shea’s.

    I lean toward the latter.

Spike, or someone else may offer more $$$, but no one offers the cache that ESPN does.

    WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT:
    — The eaters: FANTASTIC entrances (loved Dr. Simpson/Ninja Turtle) and their performances were nothing short of outstanding! They were all really into the event.
    — George Shea: The best MC in the business! Very entertaining and fun!
    — Rich and that other guy on the broadcast team: Good color/bite-by-bite.

    AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT / RECOMMENDATIONS:
    — ESPN needs to get the leader card information straightened out. Listing the wrong leaders or wrong totals makes the organization look like either they don’t know what they’re doing, didn’t take it seriously, or both. Also, why not list ALL totals on the totals board. There are gurgitators there besides the top five.
    — Show the other eaters on camera from time to time. Sure, the focus SHOULD be on the top several, but it takes all eaters to make the event. They’ve all earned the right to have their “mugs” flashed up on the T.V. a couple or three times during the broadcast.
    — Eliminate dunking. This makes a big mess, inflates the totals, and makes the “sport” less appealing to the public. This was especially conveyed during Koby’s reversal on National T.V. on July 4th, whereby the extra water put the hot dog contents under sizable water pressure, and it really turned heads of some of the viewers. It did mine. Dunking food in water is the equivalent of allowing some batters to use pine tar in baseball. It shouldn’t be.

I do follow a good many AICE events. Based on the IFOCE event schedule, I’ll be doing more of that through the end of the year. And the ML eaters will have much time to diet and take some well deserved time off.

I like to follow the IFOCE contests, but it is most disenchanting for me to watch some of the IFOCE events that are televised. Why do you think more people are not crazy about competitive eating? Many people find them sickening to watch, even if they do find the totals amazing, as they are.

Why do you think Spike and ESPN don’t take them seriously? Because the viewers themselves look at them as off-the-wall, ostentatious spectacles for weirdos.

The IFOCE needs to come up with a gameplan to make them appealing to more people. Right now they turn most people off. That’s a fact, even if the spectable of CE is growing.

I don’t like saying this, but reality is what it is. I want things to change. The eaters deserve it and need to be admired for what they can do, not rejected.

The counting was bad. Juliet ate at least 60, but she only got credit for 44.

It will be very interesting to see how much food Krystal bob eats in his next event. How he finished ahead of Pat is stunning. Compared to Bertoletti Bob was eating in slow motion after 2 minutes and unless he was 30 Krystals ahead of Pat there is no way he ate more than Pat.

Anyway Mu Juliet proved once again that she is the best eating woman in the world. She can’t help it if she gets cheated in the count.

With Humble Bob’s amazing total in such a heavily weighted event, he could well move ahead of Pat Bertoletti in the rankings. He might well also break the 50 HDB barrier this year. He has really impressed me with that Krystal total. I can’t say enough about him. If you’re reading this Bob, CONGRATULATIONS BIG TIME!

No, I believe Juliet’s count, but she proved that she is quite a force in CE. How many times did it take many other world class eaters to break the 40 barrier. Yet she has done it in less than a few months! She might pull another Humble Bob in a year or two. Who knows?

You may be right. It would probably take a lot of practice, but I can certainly understand why many don’t. The “young-uns” under or around 30 years of age can get away with it for now, but practicing eating such large quantities of food has got to tax the body and shorten the life span if you do it enough.

Sonya rocks my socks. She has gained ground very slowly, but has gained. This year she raised her Nathan’s number after having seemed to stalled for a while. Rich is similar. Rich is like a woodchipper going through food. A cute little rabid hamster chewing away. You are right about Juliet too Rhonda. She has seen a mild improvement from her well above average start since she started in August 2006. I thought she was going to hit one out of the park and beat Hall “Hoover” Hunt after mopping the floor with him in wings, or vaccum rather. I have no comment about the top 4 except (I am now standing up and clapping in a slow, steady, congratulatory manner.) Well done.

Inquiring minds I already explained more about my personal life on this site than most other people. I am an avid follower of CE and this is the best site out there to keep up with things. I ignore most of the imbecilic comments, such as yours (even though I get a good laugh reading them), but I have spare time to answer such thoughtless inputs today.

As a matter of fact, as an online English instructor for non-native English speaking adult learners, I spend most of my time online each day–I am grading “papers” right now, as a matter of fact–and this helps me take my mind off of that. I have to look up once in awhile and the total amount of time I spend reading and posting comments on eatfeats is cumulatively no more than 30 – 40 minutes a day. I really get a kick out of it!

You might want to take a time management course if you think all I do all day is read and respond to comments here. I can recommend some great books on the subject if you care to self-indulge.

Does that answer your question? Now, tell us about yourself. Let’s share info and share alike. Eh?
