Michael did a wonderful job with the play-by-play and made sure that every competitor had their plates weighed and results recorded for this event.

People want to see a close contest like the 66 to 63
but without Koby around Joey ass kickings
will get OLD FAST.
Brawts contest is still on without MLE
reason ?
People claim the no# s where to high
So go Joey win and make all your money now
why you ruin the sport of eating for everyone

MM 7.65 is not a new record. Joey ate 8.4 lbs last year. He’s lucky other top five competitors were not there. It’s a damned shame that Chestnut wants to give neither Rich or Eric or anyone else outside the top 6 or 7 a chance to win a contest here and there. I mean, my God, the purse was only $2,500–and he’s greedy for that!
At least Koby only comes to the contests that have the most lucrative purses. Joey had better enjoy his unearned, pseudo # 1 world ranking while he can.

Someone on this website once left a comment . “joey has done alot for us and if he wins the mustard belt you don’t realize what he will be doing for you ” Maybe i am lost. What has he done for us? Besides claiming all the money and glory for himself please explain what that will do for me and you . I am lost.

He has done something for me. His being placed # 1 has added weight to an earlier contention in my mind (initially asserted by Joe Menchetti and reinforced by the IFOCE) that the rankings are a joke.
They’re all about money that can potentially be made by the rankings change. As soon as this doesn’t come to fruition the rankings will change again. Has anyone besides me noticed the decrease in the number of competitions since Joey became the predominant force in the U.S. (in the past year)? He does not sell like Koby and Sonya and he never will.
When Koby and Sonya are no more, the IFOCE will again become more of a carnival side show than it is now. The unfair, unfounded descent in the rankings for both of them shows me that the people who run that organization don’t really take competitive eating seriously at all. So why should fans?
So, thanks IFOCE/Joey, I was taking competitive eating way too seriously. Thanks for bringing me back down to earth and for helping me get refocused on more important things.

“A rising tide lifts all boats” ..Joey and the other top 8 eater’s performances are raising the tide, I think you’re being rather short-sighted.

I can see the concern with other eaters getting a chance to win with Joey there, however, you cannot criticize him for competing. He is a competitive eater, he likes to do it, and he is good at it.
The real problem is with the payouts, where the top three to five eaters get a payout. To use the golf analogy brought up so many times, in a normal tournament ALL players advancing to the final day get a payout. Obviously the winner gets the lion’s share. Perhaps if the IFOCE competitions were structured more like this, we would see two results.
1. the lower abilitied eaters would be happier whether or not Joey competed, and,
2. with more of the purse distributed down the ranks, Joey MAY feel less interested in some of the contests that he would otherwise enter.

Yeah, I agree with Pat. I compare Joey’s success to someone like Alex Rodriguez in baseball. When A-Rod honed his skills to become the game’s best player and signed his $25 million per year deal, other players weren’t mad at him for being successful. They may have been a little jealous of him (they’re only human), but they realized that his big contract helped all of them make more money and his popularity and awesome talent was good for the game because it attracted more fans (which, in turn, helps them make more money).
(That anology sounded clearer in my head…hope it makes sense.)

Dave, I think the basics of that analogy is the same, but did A-rod’s contract take money out of the hands of other players?
Pat also has a great point, however with the increased popularity of CE in the media, does anyone other than corporate IFOCE see a benifit? That rising tide does nothing for all of the eaters sitting on the beach watching the IFOCE yacht sail by.
Kevin and ILKR also have a great point. Rhonda is weird. 🙂

I just think this is too funny. I love Rhonda to death. I agree with a lot of things Rhonda says and also don’t agree with a lot she says. Most of all though, I do enjoy seeing her enthusiasm and knowledge for CE. I feel I have that in common for sure.
However, I do not think that Joey is wrecking competitive eating by any means and most certainly do not think he should ever sit out just to let someone else win. On this topic I respect your opinion Rhonda and can understand where you are coming from, but I respectfully and firmly disagree. As much as I would like to see some top eaters like Joey, Crazy Legs, Tim “Eater-X” Janus, Patrick B., and others not compete at as many contests as they do so I could have a chance to win, I would never expect them to do it. That would just be selfish of me to expect them to do it. They have as much of a right to any contest that I do.
Seriously though. This isn’t elementary school PE where we have to give everyone a ribbon whether they worked their butt off or just sat around in the grass without even giving any effort. We don’t have to be nice and give everyone a turn to win. The people who compete are not little kids who need coddling and if you want to win you have to do something about it.
I suppose if you are coming from the marketing angle thinking that Joey in the spotlight is not as exciting or interesting to watch that is one thing. However, if indeed Sonya or some other eaters may be better for marketing that is not Joey’s problem. That would be something the MLE would have to deal with. They are the one’s in charge of that. Joey’s job in CE is not marketing. Joey is an eater. He eats.

Good attitudes! Between Joey, Pat, Koby, and Sonya, may at least two of them show up at each and every contest for the remainder of the year, regardless of the purse size.
Then the rest of all the IFOCE eaters can fight it out for third and fourth place money, along with the unmitigated “pride” of simply sharing a table with one of the greats. After all, how can you put a price on that?

Competitive Eating is a promotions vehicle…. no one cares, outside of the 20 people who come to this website, how much you all eat. You are trying to treat it as a sport, when the people who run the organizations are not. They are using your talents to put on a show for the sponsors who are paying them. The people who run the organizations do not care who takes home the top prize, or if it is evenly distributed. They are paid by the sponsors to do a job. People show up + there’s local media coverage = mission accomplished. The top 10 competitive eaters in the world could quit tomorrow and it wouldn’t make any difference.

Carey, I must admit I have been playing devil’s advocate lately since Koby got royally shafted in the rankings. Actually, Joey deserves nothing but congratulations across the board. How can I blame him? I really can’t in all honesty.
You have a most valid point that I have addressed off and on for the past year-and-a-half. The IFOCE should pay out through at least the top 7 placings in a contest. This would help minimize any resentment towards the people with the most talent, and would encourage many lesser talented eaters to show up at contests to try to improve their skills and pick up a buck or two in the process.
I’m sure this means as much as a hill of beans or less, but a proposal could be as listed below. The percentage prize breakdown for finishers 1 – 7 could be as follows, considering a $5,000 total purse, for example:
1st: 35 %: $1,750
2nd: 25 %: $1,250
3rd: 15 %: $750
4th: 10 %: $500
5th: 7.5 % $375
6th: 5 %: $250
7th: 2.5 %: $125
And yes, I damn sure am weird. No doubt about it. My neurosis is alive and kicking … 🙂

Hall I can’t argue with you on any of the points lested above. The only thing I’m upset about is Koby’s replacement at # 1. But I surely can’t blame Joey for that and I’ve probably suffered something close to a psychotic break over the last 2 weeks.
I’d visit my therapist if he weren’t so damned hansome, and I don’t want him to risk jeopardizing the counselor-patient relationship, as there might be new meaning to him having me “on the couch.”

Too many of you think that Joey should not compete because he is winning everything. He got to where he is by working hard and wanting to win. If others out there want to win, they need to work harder to win. In other sports, they do not make the best team sit out because they are winning too many games or matches. If the other teams want to win, they need to rise to the occasion. A lot of times, people will hate the team/individual on top, but they should not be discouraged from competing. If others can not win, they should be satisfied with giving their best and being able to go against the best of all time, so far… Congrats Joey. One day, I would like to eat along side you and give it my all.

Joey Chestnuts is the best thing since table butter. He is head and shoulders above Kobyashi. All eaters should pay him a homage fee of $100 just to sit at the same table with him. Joey Chestnuts is Kobys idol and one day if Koby is lucky he may be close to Koby in talent.
Lets hear it for Joey.Hip Hip Hooray. Hip Hip Hooray. Hip Hip Hooray. Hip Hip Hooray. Hip Hip Hooray. Hip Hip Hooray.

Joey’s victory on the 4th and his no. 1 ranking is a good thing for CE and it is justified. There were many more knowledgeable CE fans at the Chinook Winds contest this year and a much larger range, young and old, of fans in large part because of Joey’s presence. Anyone who says it is a bad thing that Joey won or that Joey is not letting anyone else win is just pathetic and jealous. Jealousy is a nasty emotion. All eaters in America will benefit now that Joey is no. 1.

It’s funny that he’s supposed to hold back or something? People show at these contests to see performances like his, the same way they showed to see Michael Jordan play. Sure, it would be nice for me to win something, but this is America, and that’s on me. Do you think the fire that caused him to train so hard will suddenly just stop?

It’s really interesting how people tend to more readily embrace an eating organization the ones they’re promoting after an upward movement in the rankings.

The Comp was great! Joey came out to defend his 2 year title. What else was he supposed to do? He wants to win, and there is nothing wrong with that. Should Koby not have defended his title at nathans? The only time an athlete would vacate a title is to move up in weight class, and scince there are no weight classes in competeive eating this is impossible. Great job to LeFever awesome effort! Eric with a big cheering section from his loved ones did very well.
