As I suspected…. the new rules DEFINITELY help out the lower-ranked eaters. Most of us were able to eat all five of the Angus burgers, which is 25 right off the bat. My highest total prior to this event was 24, so I already beat that within the first four minutes as a I swallowed my last Angus Burger.

It’s funny, I got 26, but I’m disapointed…I had a hard time on my first Angus – hit a dry bite – I thought I was gonna choke for about 15 seconds – the Krystal Blitz drink saved me. I was really expecting to do over 30 – but, hey, I’ll do it in Birmingham. Pat will improve his totals for the Finals – that’s for sure.
Anyone that is thinking of “bending the rules’…forget it. There are major deductions for “spraying”, spilling accidentally on the food, debris, throwing hamburgers over your shoulder, etc., and the judges were actually paying attention – which ruined my scheme.
As far as hot women going after an eater – Pat was surrounded at the end of the contest – they only left when I showed up to scare them away with old man leers, and bad jokes. He had to get to the airport anyway, so I think I provided a helpful service.

Being the very first qualifier, Kenny Hammondtree told us about some new rules established in relation to dunking.
We all know that dunking is not allowed. Neither is inadvertently spilling water on your Krystals, spraying them down prior to eating them, spitting water on them, or anything of the sort..

If a judge feels you inadvertantly “pre-moistened” a Krystal in any fashion, one point will be deducted from your total for each Krystal.
If a judge feels you purposely “pre-moistened” a Krystal in any fashion, twenty points will be deducted from your total.

Needless to say, this year it is possible to have a negative score.

Juliet has the potential to be a much better eater. She already is a one of the best in oysters and clams.

The one trait that I see that she needs is focus. She often looks very confused when eating, as if she hasn’t fully thought about the best / quickest way to eat, especially with foods that involve technique/strategy, and not just pure hand-to-mouth speed, as with oysters, clams, probably sushi, etc.

I believe she tries so hard to be near the leaders throughout the contest that she loses concentration and gets a bit stressed. I think if she could settle down and focus, she’d improve further and the number of naysayers and detrators would be cut in half.

I hardly think she’ll end up with a negative total. I actually think she has a 50-50 shot of making it to the final table.

    Good luck to you Juliet.

    2. “Wild Bill” Myers 34 points
    3. Rick Petralia 31 points
    4. “Chef” Mike Nafziger
    5. Paul Barlow

The Top 5 according to Krystal:

    1. Pat Bertoletti – 67 Krystal Burger Points (42 Krystals, 5 Big Angus)
    2. Wild Bill Myers – 34 Krystal Burger Points (9 Krystals, 5 Big Angus)
    3. Rick Petralia – 31 Krystal Burger Points (6 Krystals, 5 Big Angus)
    4. Chef Mike – 30 Krystal Burger Points (5 Krystals, 5 Big Angus)
    5. Tom Knopp – 29 Krystal Burger Points (4 Krystals, 5 Big Angus)

Your 8:14, Aug 23 post is so funny Paul!

Actually, I think I’d prefer to be around Pat or any other eatere BEFORE versus after an event.

Gastro, I think 81 in the finals is humanly possible, given the point system and addition of 5-point Angus burgers, but that’s got to be at or close to the upper limit.

I haven’t seen videos of Pat qualifying, but I HAVE seen a video of him devouring the Kookamonga. He only dunked there for the bun. Still, at all other times he didn’t dunk, it still looked pretty gross, and there still was debris.

My point: If the no dunking rule was introduced to have the competitors eat the burgers the way they were designed to eat, then I think the rule is mostly a failure.

Competitive eating isn’t about being neat. And especially not eating as much as possible in 8, 10, 12 minutes. So it looks gross, so what? That’s inherent to speed eating. No bonus points are awarded for being neat.

What’s next? A rule saying you have to use knife and fork?

Anyway, I guess the no dunking rule probably reduces debris somewhat, but nowhere near entirely.

I’ve a question, is the Angus Burger a quarter pounder? Also, is it similar to the one I’ve eaten at MacDonalds? I’m just curious and I’m trying to get a better feel for what I can expect some of the numbers that the eaters will put up.

Krystal website lists BA Burger at Serving Size (202g)

McDonald’s website lists Quarter pounder at Serving size 6 oz (169 g)

    4 oz = 113.398 g

According to a comparison between Krystals and McDonalds, the BA Burger is bigger than the quarter pounder

The Big Angus is similar in size to the Quarter Pounder. However, the texture is completely different. I’ve been eating them and the best way I could describe the difference is the bun is larger, with less density than the quarter pounder, and the meat is a lot less chewy and breaks down much faster. It also tastes about 10 times better than the quarter pounder. Takes me about 20-22 seconds to eat one dry – 8 seconds (from my perspective) is really fast to put it down. Not that I would expect to even be in the same realm speedwise as Pat Bertoletti – it still just seems really fast because there is a lot of bread.

The angus, like any competition food, was a lot drier in the actual competition. Most guys said they expected to eat more, but the dryness really surprized them. then, as they got used to it, the pace picked up. Look at the video, SP looks like he’s gonna die on the first one, same with the weather guy and others on the top row. Except Bertoleeti, who moves like lightning no matter what.

The Angus was dry and was not what I was expecting. I was used to getting them loaded with everything. It was a shock to the system eating the Angus, but could that be because the bun was the main wall to get by?
As for the Angus being 5 points, I think it’s great. In reality the Angus weight wise is the same as 3 Krystal’s, so more points for less weight. Of course more guys expected to eat more, but not everyone one underestimated the no dunking rule. I know that as soon as Pat got off the plane he was at a Krystal, but hey who could blame him, I mean I live in Noog so I eat them quite often so I know what I was expecting.
