A short contest promoting tomorrow's Nathan's qualifier in Savannah took place on Good Morning Savannah between pro wrestler Bruce "The Hangman" Pobanz and Fractious Phoebe of the Savannah Derby Devils. Pobanz claimed to be ranked #2 for over-50 competitive eater in 2008. If such a listing existed, Rich LeFevre and Ron Koch would have been ranked ahead of Pobanz if it was accurate. (via comment)

Spoke with someone who drove from Atlanta to Savannah and they say the local paper has no mention of eater x. The paper mentions two ranked eaters and two females from the local roller derby. I also heard that people are walking around the wtetrfront in coats and hats the day before. It is in the mid 40’s Friday afternoon they said. Another cold day for a contest?

I watched the video and thought it was cute. A big, tall eater standing in between a short tv reporter and a petite woman from roller derby. The image people see is a giant of a man going up against a little woman. You mentioned accurate. What is accurate? He says he was a pro wrestler. Ok. When the announcer introduces a wrestler in the ring and gives their height or weight, how many verify it is true? When Richard Shea introduces an local eater during a contest, how many verify everything he says is true. It is called hype. Sheas do it. Wrestlers do it? Even PT Barnum did it.
Pobanz is not a competitive eater and he says so. He is almost 60 years old he says. He retired from competitive eating years ago. The Sheas know hype. They have true competitive eaters going up against local celebrities from at least two sports. Roller Derby and wrestling. They also have other beer drinking locals up there for more added color. All this color brings out locals to watch and be introduced to the product at hand. That being Nathan’s hot dogs. Will the roller derby queen win? Will the retired wrestler win? Will the beer drinking local with the big belly win? They stand as much chance as William The Refrigerator Perry did years ago.
I, like many, enjoy movies, wrestling and roller derby. I do not care who has the bigger set. As to accurate. Did he say who or where he was ranked. No. So who is to say he was accurate or not. If the people come out and enjoy, that is what the company with the product wants. Big crowds consuming their hot dogs.
Who will win. I do know Nathan’s will win. And the Sheas win. More people will watch and enjoy. Are the movies we watch real? No. Is wrestling real? No. Is roller derby real? No. Yet we pay millions and billions to watch them every year. The Sheas know that and they capitalize on that. They make money. The sponsors make money. while we sit hear, reading on this one website on some eaters claiming to have the bigger set.
One last thing. Pobanz ate one hot dog in 30 seconds. That breaks down to maybe 20 hot dogs in 10 minutes. There are professional ranked eaters here, eaters ranked in the top 50 by IFOCE who cannot eat 20. Some cannot eat 15. And some can barely break 11. I thought the video I saw was cute.
Now back to the real world. Where we try to pay our bills. where we try to feed our families. Where we strive to keep our paying job.

Anon at 710 STUPID math. One dog in 30 seconds does mean he can eat 20 in 10 minutes. There is a thing called capacity that has nothing to do with speed on 1 HDB.
