How funny is it that he reverses on 7.5 lbs. but expects to eat 20 lbs.+ of hot dogs and beat Joey at Coney Island. I think he should go back to writing kids books.

give the kid an A for effort but someone needs to bring him down to reality………..it is unlikely this untested rookie will take down joey chestnut or even place in the top 10 at nathans…..that is of course if he even makes it to the final table

Well he does expect to eat 70 hot dogs according to the back of some of the shirts. I think they said something like 70 dogs in 10 minutes, bring it on Coney Island.

And he’ll be laughing all the way to the bank, with all the attention they are giving this guy for having accomplished absolutely nothing. Watch, in a week or so he’ll claim he actually finished this challenge like he did with his Applebee’s fiasco. This “Furious” Pete of Cleveland doesn’t care if he’s a good eater or not, he’ll just continue to tell everybody he is, continue to make outrageous claims of eating abilities, and by the time he has to actually eat against a Joey Chestnut he’ll make up some excuse that IFOCE wouldn’t let him compete. Don’t let the religious front fool you since he seems to have no qualms over lying about his record and making outrageous claims of eating prowess. I’m just surprised he didn’t bring up his tragic past to gain more sympathy from the reporter.

Sorry but what bank? As far as I can tell, he has gotten lots of publicity but nothing to put into his bank in the way of hard cash. Is this incorrect?

Yeah, no real money yet. But, Pete just started off in his kitchen on the web. Look for this guy to start selling tee shirts, hats, and eventually looking for sponsorship and appearance fees. His goal is to get everybody hyped about him and Chestnut. Notice how he dismisses everyone else. He’s already started making shirts hyping his “Road to Coney Island” claiming 70 hotdogs and he hasn’t even done anything yet, let alone qualify. Start small like Pete on the web with college papers, local mags, and newspapers, let that build, then work on more national outlets. His story is good, poor kid turns around life (he’ll play that up like Pete), goes into military (Pete tapped the weightlifting community), and becomes a world champion eater. He actually used an EATFEATS poll he rigged to tout himself as the rookie of the year. Eventually some national reporter or documentarian who knows little or nothing about competitive eating will buy into his schtick and he can start marketing himself more nationally, and as in Pete’s case internationally with the Germans, etc. It’s a pretty proven strategy if he follows Pete’s model.

I don’t like the comparison of Bickel to Pete. Pete is an awesome eater. Bickel is mediocre at best. Just doesn’t seem fair to Pete to make any comparison. Also, I guess Jesus doesn’t count it as gluttony when you reverse.

Whew, lots of comments. I agree with anonymous that comparing Pete to Bickel as an eater is a big stretch. But I think the comparisons are about their styles of getting publicity, not their eating capabilities.

But I think the comparisons are about their styles of getting publicity, not their eating capabilities. It would be better to leave Jesus out of this. Hall Hunt is very plain spoken about his faith. As for gluttony, every single competitive eater is, by definition, gluttonous and eating disordered, at least during contests and challenges.

For both Pete and Bickle it has nothing to do with eating. For them it’s just promotion and perception. While Pete is probably better than Bickle, eating for them is just to get people to believe they are top eaters and cash in on some of the fame and notoriety that people like Kobi, Joey and Sonya created. When in reality they are both not that great at eating. This was proven when Pete finally had to step up and eat pizza against Kobi and couldn’t make up any excuses like IFOCE wouldn’t let him. If you’d like another comparison, a woman in Atlanta (who just so happens to be slim, very attractive and of Asian heritage) claims to the media she’s a great eater, eats on a website, but in reality she’s not a great eater and all she really doing is promoting restaraunts for cash. But she can tap into the mystique of Sonya to get people think she’s like Sonya when it comes to eating, when in reallity she’s nothing like Sonya. Same thing, just a different gender that Bickle’s trying to do with Chestnut, he’s just following a proven game plan that Pete perfected.

I found this on a website that promotes the book Scott wrote.

“I am the absolute most inspired, determined, and relentless person you will ever hear of, know of, or come in contact with in your lifetime. My name is Scott Anthony Michael Bickel. I endured one of the harshest childhoods known to man as I battled being physically, mentally, emotionally, and sexually abused and neglected from my biological drug addicted parents, being split from my siblings and traveling foster home to foster home, being labeled as deaf, dumb, and mute by the Cuyahoga County Human Resource Department, and undergoing adoption at age 5 and living many heavily burdened years of life in the painful unknown of my dreaded past. Don’t get me wrong, there is not a challenge or hardship in the universe that I cannot overcome and defeat. I currently reside in the city of North Royalton/Cleveland, OH. I was voted most interesting in the city of Cleveland by Cleveland Magazine. Through a divine relationship with God, I am truly blessed as I became a follower of Christ, a flourishing published author of the inspirational romantic novel “The White Picket Fence” which is a love story based on the extraordinary true events of my life, a U.S. Marine who graduated top of my class in the world’s most brutal military Armed Forces basic training camp at the infamous Parris Island, a self taught master of the piano, a self taught marvelous magician, and one of the world’s greatest champion extreme eaters, all by the age of 20. I have come a long way considering the fact I could not speak until age 4. I knew ever since I was 6 years old I was born to make a difference and do something inspiring for the world. My mission in existence is by far not easily achievable, nor am I satisfied with any of my success thus far. I don’t believe there will ever be a day in my life that I am truly content until I have sought out to do EVERYTHING I wish to do in my days here on Earth; dedicate my life to God and Jesus Christ, have a super successful career, find and marry the true love of my life, have beautiful children with her, live happily ever after with her, build my white picket fence, and eventually leave this earth knowing I made a memorable impact on the rest of humanity and ascend into Heaven. I still have many years to live and accomplish my aspirations, but I must do it for God.”

Can you please include the link? If this is what he wrote, by anyone’s stretch of the imagination there have to be/should be some people/press who are doing some fact checking. A self-published book is one thing, but to have others take these things as reality is beyond comprehension. In my opinion, if someone were writing this as fiction, no one would believe it. I do not think anyone in the IFOCE would believe it either. Seeing is believing. Eating is believing. The rest is only words. Truth and consequences.

A “digital” article I found, one very poorly written, repeats much of this story. These articles are not in the New York Times or The Wall Street Journal etc. Anyone can have a blog or write a digital article. Here is the one comment from that article.

Just to set it straight, Scott Bickel may have went to recruit training but since he lied about enlistment qualifications he was considered a Fraudulent Enlistment and was thus kicked out. Just because you complete recruit training does not mean you are a Marine.

Were some posts removed a few days ago from this thread? I saw one one evening and the next morning it was gone, but it wasn’t too bad of a comment, just about gluttony being a biblical sin. Is there a way for posters to delete or edit their own comments here, or did the person have to email OJ to get it removed? I don;t believe OJ would have removed it on his own.

Thanks 6:15 pm yesterday. The logo says “Write your own success” so this is entirely self published and self-financed. I am not saying that ExLibris doesn’t have worthy ideas in the digital age about publishing, but clearly it is entirely up to the author to present him or herself. http://www2.xlibris.com/about_xlibris.html Thus, putting all into perspective, let’s just say that Scott is choosing his own adventures.

I think Tiny ate more then Bickle, who btw ate what 6 1/2 plates total (1.5 of those plates were lettuce and fruit btw)… I don’t think that’s convincing anybody on this board. I think Monson posted some buffet pics a while back that put this to absolue shame, also Naader’s buffet adventures are equally if not better then what I just saw….

one final note, Scott, not only are you delusion, but my 6yr old makes less of a mess at the dinner table then you do.
