Sonya wins Philly with 36.5 hot dogs

1) Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas 36.5 hot dogs
2) “Humble” Bob Shoudt 28
3) “Big” Brian Subich 25
4) Pat “from Moonachie” Philbin 24
It used to be that 24 hot dogs would almost certainly guarantee a victory in a qualifier, but that amount did not place in the top three in this event.
Brian Subich turns in an impressive performance and justifies his decision to turn down an arena football contract from the winless Steubenville Stampede.
For the second straight year the amount Sonya Thomas ate in a qualifier was virtually equal to the amount she ate in the previous year’s finals. Sonya set a women’s record with 37 hot dogs in the 2005 finals. She did 32 in last year’s Norfolk qualifier and the 2004 finals.

I have yet to reach the Coney Island finals in almost 9yrs of competitive eating. It could be i just dont train that hard or physical health limitations and age which i mentioned in the past. When i got the call from Subich that he ate 25 in philly i felt that i reached the mountaintop. When Subich first came on the scene in 2004 i took him under my wing and gave him some pointers and tips which seemed to have worked but just not enough to get him to the top . Ironically it is usually the eaters who are on the downslide in their career that make the best teachers because they cannot use that advice to their advantage so they try to instill the wisdom to their pupils which seemed to be the case with myself and Subich. I congrad this man for hanging in there when the tough got going . Subich says if he gets to Coney he will wear my Beautiful Brian trademark hat at the finals. That is extremely touching . Skinny boy will there ever come a time when people can go to your site without having to be subjected to looking at pics of your training regime. I can see if it gets results but you havent won a qualifier and it appears that you have a hard time getting past 12 or 13 hot dogs and buns.For some reason the pics you post of the hotdogs make me sick. Forget the capacity training and .save yourself the aggravation Model yourself after Joey. drink 2 gallons in the morning and 2 at night if you want to crack 20 or more Ok!

Don’t hate on Skinny boy. Your’re the one that goes yo his site, obviously there is something about him that greatly interests you. Are you a competitve eater?? If so, are you ranked? Because if not, he is, and i bet he can probably eat more than you. IFOCE eaters for the most part, have respect for each other. SKinny Boy is proud of his hard work, as well is Eric the Red Denmark (with his blogs), Steak Bellie, and Don Moses. Good for them. representing with style and pride.
WHat do you do?? Hate… such a hater. Enough with the haters on this trencherwomen site.

I’m a bit let down by Sonya’s performance. I really expected her to eat well over 40. I think it’s very possible that she is trying to keep her capability a secret.

Wyatt, let’s keep things in perspective, there’s only 3 people on the PLANET that have done more than 36.5 hot dogs….and Sonya’s one of them!
It may be “The Joey & Kobe Show” on the 4th but what Sonya does is still amazing….I’d never count her out either! 😉

Hard to say what might happen on July 4th. Koby could have a bad day and “only” down 45 and Chestnut could come in somewhere around 43 (maybe the Vegas qualifier was as good as it gets for Joey). Meanwhile, Sonya has a good day and eats 46 to take the title. Personally, I don’t think that’ll happen. Koby (49), Chestnut (47), Sonya (41)…that’s my prediction for the top three.

I also hope that Sonya is saving the show for the 4th. With Koby and Jaws going head to head with what will definitely be the closest battle for nathans ever(my money’s on Jaws), I hope that Sonya will also push the 40 mark.

MegaMunch, there’s no way Jaws is gonna put down less than he qualified with. I’d bet he comes closer to 60 than 50. While I do think Sonya was holding back, I don’t think she could do more than 45.

I have a couple of things. First, Pat, I totally agree about Sonya’s 36.5 HDBs on Saturday. I think people who don’t know much about competitive eating are taking too much for granted. They are spoiled by the awesome talent now present in the IFOCE.
I really don’t think Sonya was holding back. But she was only 1/2 of a dog shy of breaking her own record. What in the world is wrong with that? She “only” had to eat 29 to qualify, but she still ate over 35. I mean My God!! From what I’ve read Sonya doesn’t even practice and very rarely eats dogs, except during a contest.
I think that at Coney she’ll break the 40 barrier, simply because of pride alone. But I don’t think Sonya can eat more than 41 – 42 dogs. Look, I’m guilty too — “ONLY … ”
Second, Mega I pretty much agree with you. I don’t want Koby to win again but unless he is not on his game, Joey and Sonya will not touch him — period!. Watching Koby at the US Open showed me how much better Koby is than all other eaters, regardless of the food eaten. There is no one else like Kobayashi in this world on the competitive eating scene.
