A Brief History of Brad Sciullo

Here is a quick recap of the highlights of Brad Sciullo’s competitive eating career for newcomers to this web site:

  • 2007 Competes in 6 IFOCE contests in 2007. Sciullo’s highest finish is runner-up in a Nathan’s qualfier.
  • February 2008 Competes in Wing Bowl 16 and is in second place halfway through the contest (ahead of Pat Bertoletti and behind Joey Chestnut), but is disqualified for “snotting a wing”.
  • March 2008 Announces retirement from competitive eating, no reason provided.
  • July 2008 Competes in a non-IFOCE meatball eating contest in suburban Chicago under the name Eric “The Herald” Durst and finishes in 8th place.
  • August 2008 Returns to IFOCE competition at the Buffalo Wing Festival. While in Buffalo, Sciullo records a video disparaging the victor of the meatball contest, Furious “Pete” Czerwinski, and AICE, the organization which sanctioned the competition.
  • September 2008 Wins the cannoli eating contest at the Festival of San Gennaro in New York City. Footage from the contest appears in an ESPN E:60 segment about the IFOCE in which Sciullo’s passion for competitive eating impresses reporter Jeremy Schaap.
  • October 2008 Becomes the first person to complete the 15-20 pound Belly Buster burger at Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub. Sciullo is not listed in the new IFOCE rankings for October 2008, which probably indicates he has been banned for doing an eating challenge which was not sanctioned by the IFOCE.
  • December 2008 Completes the 10-11 pound burger at Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub in 2 hours and 23 minutes, breaking the 2005 record of 2:54 jointly held by Kate Stelnick and Lori Weiss. Sciullo’s feat will appear in a Travel Channel program called Extreme Restaurants
  • April 2009 Finishes fourth in the Wing Madness contest in Pittsburgh.
  • October 2009 Sciullo’s completion of the Belly Buster Burger is the subject of 2 segments on The Colbert Report Part 1 | Part 2

Brad Sciullo interview in Mouthpiece Sports

The Mouthpiece Sports blog has an interview with Brad Sciullo about his successful completion of the Belly Bruiser challenge. Brad finishes the interview in the following manner:

It’s opening some eyes. This is great for all competitive eaters. Everyone of us is going to benefit from this because this raises the bar. I’m guaranteeing you that from this day forward bigger numbers will be put up — numbers like no one’s ever seen. Things that make this look ridiculously easy because everyone’s going to realize that this is possible. That someone like myself — who isn’t as good as the top-ranked eaters — can do this this is going to send everyone into a frenzy. And it’s going to be great for the sport in general.

And what’s next:

I’m either going to go back to Denny’s and eat every one of their burgers on their menu in the same day, which will equal about what that burger weighed. I’ll eat the two-pounder, the three-pounder, and the Ye’ Olde 96er in the same day. Or I’m going to do a pizza competition.
