Tufts University lacrosse player passes away after hot dog eating contest
WCVB reports that Madie Nicpon, a defender on the Tufts University women’s lacrosse team from Suffern, NY, passed away after choking during a off campus hot dog held Sunday in Somerville, MA. The competition was part of “Play for Pink”, a breast cancer fundraiser. She is the second female student at a New England college to after choking in a charity eating contest in the past 5 years. Caitlin Nelson passed away in 2017 after choking in a pancake eating contest held at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT (WCVB news video | Lohud article)

I wish that there was a way to emphasize emphatically that any contest taking place must have an EMT available immediately. There is no excuse for not arranging for that alongside a big cautionary note that contests can be dangerous. Just very sad. It is the bread and pancakes etc. that get stuck in the throat. Just as before, there is sure to be a lawsuit.

Eating ANYTHING – right down to a single bite of steak or hamburger – poses a choking hazard. There is no excuse for an eating contest to be held without emergency medical supervision. This is so sad.

Unfortunately EMT is not a panacea. Medical personnel were present at the Fresno taco tragedy; part of the lawsuit is that they failed to act appropriately.

It was an unsanctioned eating contest held at a private residence. There was no way they were going to have an EMT there!

As pointed out previously, if the EMT tried to do CPR, that was the wrong treatment. They should have unstuck the airway in the previous death. EMT presence is not guarantee of safe eating.
