India, Hawaii, PA contest results

Ramadan Haleem Eating Contest, Hyderabad, India

The winner of the competition was Mohammad Saleem who managed to eat two kilograms of Haleem in 30 seconds.

“I am feeling really good. They gave us two minutes to finish it but I don’t know in how much time I finished that much,” said Saleem.

An eatery in the city, called ‘Pista House’, started organising this competition in 2003 with vegetarian versions of Haleem during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The owner of eatery said he organised the competition despite recent terror attacks in the city to ease tension among residents.

“We have organised this competition to make people feel a little relaxed,” said M. A. Majeed, organiser of the competition.

New Delhi mango contest results

Hindu.com reports on a mango eating contest held at the Mango Festival in New Delhi, India:

In the mango eating competition for men and women, the first prize carried a cash component of Rs.3,000 and the second prize of Rs.2,000. In the women’s category Anita Chowdhary won the first prize for eating 1.392 kg of mango pulp and Asha Sood who managed to eat 1.298 kg of mango pulp bagged the second prize.

The mango eating competition for men that was held on Sunday saw a more competitive fight.

Shabil Khan won the first prize for eating 1.626 kg of mango pulp and the second prize was bagged by Deepak Grover who ate1.572 kg of mango pulp.

Death in Indian eating contest

newindpress.com reports that Sridhar, son of Shanmugham, a 29 year old from a village near Sathyamangalam in Erode district died from breathing complications after eating 20 rice cakes in an idli eating competition. Sridhar is believe to be an epilepsy patient.

“Theeta” Rappai, India’s top eater, dies

ibnlive.com reports that Kurian “Theeta” Rappai of Thrissur, India died Saturday morning. The English translation of “Theeta” is big eater and he earned his nickname by forcing restaurants to drop their all you can eat specials. The article claims that Rappai once ate 15kg (33 lb.) of pudding in one meal. Reports of Rappai’s age vary. ibnlive says he was 65 while newindpress claims he was 63. Rappai retired from big eating this summer due to diabetes and other health issues. sarathc’s father knew Rappai and he describes the time Rappai exacted revenge on a buffet that charged prices different from what was listed on the menu.

updated The Peninsula has an article about Rappai stating he was 67. The life expectancy for Indians is 60 – 61 years.

Buffets of the subcontinent are safe (for now)

(From slashfood.com) Dale Boone was apparently not exaggerating when he described the great competitive eaters of South Asia. This article in the Hindustan Time tells about the gastronomic exploits of a man known as “Theeta” of Thrissur, India, who once ate 10kg of halwa in 10 minutes. The police have been called several times to evict “Theeta” from a buffet. Doctors have forced “Theeta” to curtail his eating following a hospitalization, so restaurants are now free to restart their all you can eat specials.

The tempestuous world of Indian competitive eating

A fried chicken eating contest will be held in Kozhikode, India on Thursday in an attempt to allay fears about bird flu. The contest will last 3 minutes and has an entry fee of 25 rupees. The entry fee was imposed to limit the number of entrants. Violence broke out at a free chicken biriyani and fried chicken mela contest last week when contest organizers were unable to handle the surge of participants.
