New Poll: next new Nathan’s qualifier site

The Nathan’s qualifiers are clustered around the finals site in Coney Island. Of the 12 qualifiers open to the general public, 5 are located between Philadelphia and Hartford. A qualifier was added in Minneapolis this year to make the geographic distribution more even. (This is the first qualifier in the central time zone I am aware of) The new poll question asks where is the optimal location for the next new qualifier site.

New Poll: Whither Dale Boone?

The new poll question asks when (and if) Dale Boone should be allowed to enter IFOCE contests after his return from India.

New Poll: Rank the 2006 contest winners

The new poll question asks how the three contest winners of 2006: Sonya Thomas, Joey Chestnut and Pat Bertoletti should be ranked. (I think those three have won all non-qualifier IFOCE contests since Cookie Jarvis won the Smirnoff grape contest at the start of November) I want to set up user rankings with more than 3 eaters, but doing so will require a more complicated poll system which does not use radio buttons.

New Poll: comment civility level

The new poll question is inspired by The Whaler’s Eater X fan blog like the previous question. In his recent blog entry, The Whaler states that he finds the general tone of comments on this board obsequious and treacly. I am curious to see if that opinion is shared.

Limited posting & moderation this weekend

This weekend I will be at a location where I will have limited internet access. Posting and comment approval will be sporadic and possibly non-existent until Sunday afternoon. I hope everyone has a good weekend.

New Poll: competitive eating and Olympics

The new poll question is courtesy of The Whaler and asks which Olympics, if any, should competitive eating be added to?

Dale Boone comments

The commenter DBOONE9TH@MSN.COM sent his comments from an eastern hemisphere location. Since Brian Seiken has been in communication with “The Mouth of the South” who told him that he will return to the United States and competitive eating those comments are most likely by the actual Dale Boone. The Atlanta Nathan’s qualifier could be an interesting scene if Boone considers fellow Georgians Bubba Yarbrough and Larry McNeil “carpetbaggers” as he did Carlene LeFevre.

I will be away from the computer for most of the day, so comment moderation will be slow.

Reminder: Badlands Booker will appear on the G4 network’s Attack of the Show! at 7pm eastern

The site’s original comment policy has been restored. Comments by registered users are usually approved automatically, comments by unregistered users require approval.

Unregistered comments turned off

I have decided to turn off unregistered comments and require approval for all registered comments for an indefinite period of time. If Brian Seiken and No Mas would like to continue their debate, I would advise them to “take it outside” to the comments of Brian Seiken’s blog beautifulbrian.blogs.com .

No Mas registered using a business email address, and that company is not located in New York or Ohio, so it is virtually certain that he is not Chapman or O’Karma

New Poll: lead role in Wing Bowl movie

The new poll question asks who should play the lead role in the upcoming Wing Bowl movie which I believe will be based on Bill “El Wingador’s” Simmons career. I can add other actors to the list of choices.

Another new poll question asking whether competitive eating should be included in the winter or summer Olympics can be found in the Whaler’s most recent blog entry. If competitive eating was added to the Winter Olympics, then eating contests could not be counterprogrammed against the Olympics, as the Glutton Bowl was aired the same time as the 2002 women’s figure skating finals (see also) I can make that question the next poll question if there are any requests for it (and the Whaler does not mind)

New Poll: grilled cheese bowl winning total

The new poll question asks what the winning total for Wedensday’s goldenpalace.com grilled cheese final will be. Here are the top results for the previous poll about your favorite eater’s website: All results can be found at http://trencherwomen.com/wp-polls.php

Big Brian Subich -> 20% (22 Votes)
Andrew Skinnyboy Lane’s blog -> 16% (17 Votes) 16%
Beautiful Brian Seiken -> 14% (15 Votes) 14%
Humble Bob Shoudt -> 12% (13 Votes) 12%
Sonya The Black Widow Thomas -> 11% (12 Votes) 11%
Don Moses Lerman -> 7% (8 Votes) 7%
Tim Eater X Janus fan blog -> 6% (6 Votes) 6%
Super Paul Barlow, Jr -> 6% (6 Votes) 6%

I have reason to believe that some people voted twice (or more) so the above results should be considered extremely unscientific. I was highly surprised that Subich had the winning total given that his website does not appear to have been updated in 2006. The goal for the poll was to make people aware of the websites in the competitive eating community rather than provide an accurate determination of the most popular website.

(from Bob Shoudt) In another competitive eating poll, 610wip.com has a poll on its home page in which you can vote for the first member of the Wing Bowl Hall of Fame. The choices are Heavy Kevy, Bill El Wingador Simmons, and “Soyna” Thomas.

New Poll: Favorite eater website

This week’s poll question asks what website devoted to a single eater is your favorite. I have tried to list all eater websites including the more obscure ones. Please let me know if there are any I missed and I will put it in the poll.

Announcement: EatFeats.com database

I have set up a competitive eating database at EatFeats.com The database currently contains all the results I could find starting with the middle of 2005. I intend to expand the database to include earlier contests and restaurant’s “walls of fame” for eating challenges. Users can modify data about an eater or contest but not results. The modifications require approval before appearing in the main database. I hope to allow users to add and modify results soon. I also want to have this blog accessible using the eatfeats.com domain name. Any suggestions on how the database can be improved are welcome.

Updated 1/22 10:00 pm The 2002 pickle contest has been added to the database ahead of schedule due to popular demand.

New Poll: Big Daddy Burger contest winner

The new poll question asks who will win the nine pound Big Daddy Burger at the Plaza Casino in Las Vegas Saturday. (I am assuming that Joey Chestnut will compete, but I have not seen any definite announcement that he is expected to appear.)

Previous poll results: preferred length of eating contest

10:01 – 15 minutes -> 33%
5:01 – 10 minutes -> 29%
30:01 – 1 hour -> 22%
15:01 – 30 minutes -> 6%
1:00:01 or longer -> 6%
2 minutes or less -> 2%
2:01 – 5 minutes -> 2%

Total Votes: 51

False Joey Chestnut rumor

I would like apologize to Joey Chestnut for approving the post containing the false rumor that his stomach had ruptured. It should have been obvious that the poster did not know what he was talking about because his claim that the grilled cheese finals have been moved to Saturday was not supported by IFOCE.com. I will be more careful in what I approve in the future. I hope none of Joey’s friends and family became concerned due to the false claim.

New Poll: Preferred length of eating contest

I have decided to start next week’s poll given that Kate Stelnick’s reply makes the current week’s question about the legitimacy of her feat a moot point. The new question asks what is the preferred length of an eating contest. The Barrick Burger contest on January 21 is the only event on the IFOCE circuit longer than 15 minutes (the Wing Bowl is also longer than 15 minutes but that is not technically an IFOCE event). The only long duration event for AICE is the Zeus burger 3 person team contest I believe. I am curious to see if the competitive eating community would like to see more events of longer duration.

Happy 2006: New poll question

I hope everyone has a happy 2006. I have updated the poll question to ask the question: Who will be the top ranked US eater at the end of the year?

Results of previous poll:

All entrants including disqualified 77%
Top 3 / Moneywinners 14%
All entrants except disqualified 9%

Poll added: Who should be listed in contest results?

I have added polls to the site and the first question deals with how many competitors should be listed in the contest results. From “Beautiful” Brian Seiken’s comment from the meatball contest post:

I have requested official stats from the powers that be in regard to the contestants that finished out of the money 6 and up . However in the past my requests have gone unanswered with my assumption that if i post these stats it might cause friction amongst eaters that finished out of the money.

It is hard for me to see how accurately reported results could cause friction unless someone is ultra-thinskinned, in which case he/she should probably not be involved in competitive events. I am curious to see how widespread the desire for more complete contest results is for both competitors and fans.

I hope to have a new poll question about every two weeks.

I have updated the links on the right side of this blog. Please let me know if there are any competitive eating websites I have omitted.

Most registered comments no longer held for approval

I have modified the site so that most comments made by users who have registered and logged in will appear immediately and not need to be personally approved before they are publicly visible. Unregistered comments still need to pass through moderation before they show up.

Unregistered commenting re-instated

Commenting by unregistered users has been reinstated, but all comments must be approved before they appear. I will try to approve comments as quickly as possible, but I am not sure how frequently I will be able to access the internet the remainder of this week.

I hope everyone has a good Thanksgiving.

Blog androcide (How to block out male eaters)

In the comments, the observation has been made that this blog has diverged from its intended subject of females with healthy appetites. That observation is generally correct. There has not been a plethora of news about trencherwomen recently with Carlene Lefevre’s post-hospitalization hiatus and the 8 week gap between Sonya Thomas’ events. Any contribution of links or other material is appreciated.

If you do not want wish to view the entries about male competitive eaters the URL http://trencherwomen.com/category/people/ will block them out. (http://trencherwomen.com/category/trenchermen/ will prevent posts about gurgatrices from being seen.)

Site theme changed

I changed the site template from the default WordPress theme to Becca Wei’s Almost Fall theme and and modified it so the width is variable. I also swapped the green and red values, making the colors browner so I am calling the modified theme Almost Fall.

This theme can be downloaded at http://www.trencherwomen.com/almost-fall.zip I haven’t really tested it so I can’t guarantee it will work on all browsers and blogs

Site moved off Blogger to WordPress

This blog has been transferred from Blogger (on my own domain) to WordPress, as this will give me much more power and flexibility. I basically used the default skin for WordPress and just added some pictures to the header. I will eventually make some changes to the template, including going to a variable width format.

Blog moved to trencherwomen.com

This blog has been moved off blogspot and onto its own server located at http://trencherwomen.com/

I am not thrilled with the trencherwomen domain name, but I could not think of any better ones. The other names I considered, like femaleeaters femalecompetitiveeaters fastmetabolismfemales, were too long and unwieldy or sounded like a porn site.

I will probably move off blogspot completely once I decide what blogging system I should use.
