A hot dog eating contest awarding $500 to the winner will take place at the Utica (NY) Observer-Dispatch's 200th birthday party Saturday. The event was to have been held August 12, but was rescheduled due to weather.
Sergey Lyubezhanin ate 2.22 pounds of corn in 2:30 to win the first prize of $1000 at the Schuyler Corn Competition and Car Show in Utica, NY on Saturday. Joe Menchetti was the runner up with 2.15 pounds.
The Observer-Dispatch newspaper will hold a hot dog eating contest awarding $500 on August 12 as part of its bicentennial celebration.
A corn eating contest will be held August 5 in Utica, NY awarding $1000 to the winner.
The Syracuse Polish Fest will hold a pierogie eating contest on June 25 awarding $250 to the winner.

Nela Zisser is not the only pageant winner with competitive eating credentials. New Miss Rhode Island Alexandra Curtis won a wing eating contest when she was at Syracuse University. According to a 2012 interview, she was wearing a Hilary Clinton Halloween costume when she won the competition.

DMagazine reports that Kobayashi will compete in a hot dog eating contest at the Texas State Fair in Dallas on October 16.

Joey Chestnut called Kobayashi’s sponsor “nasty Hoffman crap dogs” and then engaged in a twitter feud with the sausage maker: thread 1 | thread 2 The Sports Hernia has a blog entry wondering if Shea Communications authorized Joey’s tweets.

Takeru Kobayashi will attempt to eat 100 hot dogs without buns at the New York State Fair in Syracuse this evening to set a new record. (The only bunless hot dog record I am aware of it Lynda Kuerth’s mark of eating 23 frankfurters in 3:10 in 1977 recognized by Guinness, which stopped maintaining speed eating records in the early 1990s.) Takeru Kobayashi will attempt to set a record for most bunless Hofmann hot dogs eaten in 10 minutes at the New York State Fair in Syracuse on August 26.

Kobayashi / Hofmann partnership details

Syracuse.com and DMagazine have articles about Takeru Kobayashi’s press conference this morning where his partnership with Hofmann Hot Dogs was officially announced. Some notes:

  • Takeru Kobayashi will own 50% of a new division Hofmann has created to produce a Kobayashi-branded hot dog.
  • Hofmann is planning to open a restaurant in Dallas, possibly as soon as September. (Cowboys legend Roger Staubach is another Hofmann part-owner, so that might be the reason for the location.)
  • Kobayashi will compete in a hot dog contest against a “ferocious competitor” at the Great New York State Fair on August 25.
