UMD wins Collegiate Competitive Eating League National Championship

The University of Maryland won today’s Collegiate Competitive Eating League National Championship. Other teams came from Hofstra and New York University. Ben “El Diablo” Kastner was named Most Valuable Eater. Campus Food UMD has a gallery.

The 1st Annual Collegiate Competitive Eating League National Championship will take place at the Cornerstone Grill & Loft in College Park, MD on April 16. Colleges will need to assemble teams of 10 eaters to compete.

The University of Maryland student paper has an article about the new competitive eating club team. Phil Fiore, winner of the 2009 Whiz Bowl cheesesteak eating contest, is one of the members. The club's ultimate goal is to have a national championship in May.

A "Wing Bowl" awarding $2,500 to the winner will be held at the Hard Times Café Springfield, Virginia on February 5. Qualifiers will take place at Washington, DC area Hard Times Cafés in January.
Gazette.net has a report on Saturday's Whiz Bowl in Bethesda, MD. Phillip "The Fury" Fiore won the contest with 8.5 cheesesteak sandwiches in 15 minutes. Ian Hickman was the runner up with 8.25.

The writer of the web page about the baked bean contest to be held at the Beer and Bourbon Festival at National Harbor, Maryland (suburban Washington, DC) appears ignorant that two of the world’s top competitive eaters are DC-area women:

The online newsletter for Andrews Air Force Base has the following item:

Beat the Black Widow

AAFES and Anthony’s Pizza are hosting a pizza eating contest today at 11:30 a.m. in the foodcourt of the base exchange. Sonya ‘‘Black Widow” Thomas, competitive eater, avid walker and Andrews Burger King manager, is slated to be on hand performing demonstrations and to serve as a judge for the contest. Prizes include AAFES gift cards. For more information call Anthony’s Pizza at 301-568-2200.

It is not clear whether the date of the contest is October 30 or 31.
