Chron.com has an article about Houston Cinco de Mayo festivities with a paragraph about the tamale contest:

A professional tamale-eating contest will debut at the Cinco de Mayo festival this year and will be covered by ESPN. Berryhill Baja Grill coordinated the contest with the International Federation of Competitive Eating. Seven of the top 10 competitive eaters will compete to see who can eat the most tamales in 12 minutes, Lopez said. Last year the winner ate 57 tamales in 12 minutes, he said.

No tamale eating contest appears on the ESPN or ESPN2 schedule for this weekend

Among those already signed to challenge world-champion Chip Simpson of Harrisville, Pa., are Sonya Thomas, the 105-pound, 39-year-old Alexandria, Va., woman who is ranked Number 4 among all world competitive eaters. Returning this year will be Number 3 ranked Patrick Bertoletti of Chicago who consumed a record-shattering 48 3.5-ounce beef tamales in 2006 when he met with a tragic reversal of fortune. His loss made Simpson a winner with his 41 tamales eaten. Number 7 ranked Tim Janus is also returning.

March 24 independent contest reports

The New Haven independent has an article about the vegan cupcake eating contest in New Haven, CT to promote the release of the cookbook by Little Vegan Monsters. The writer did not stay long enough to did not stay long enough to report who won the finals. Picnic style rules were not required:

And the ground rules were serious. You could eat your cupcake straight, you could dip it in water or soy milk, you could sip water before or after each cupcake. Or you could pour soy milk or water over your cupcake before consumption, which everyone agreed was completely disgusting.

that Joe Mitchell, 32, from Spring Branch won Saturday night’s big Hot Dog Eating Contest at Sam Houston Race Park by eating 9 1/2 Hebrew National hot dogs in 10 minutes, winning a prize of $95.

IFOCE.com has posted their writeup of Saturday’s Tamale contest at the Berryhill grill in Houston won by Chip Simpson. I am curious if any notables besides Chip, Pat, Rich, Tim & Levi competed and what were the circumstances of Rich’s post-contest reversal.

Houston Chronicle previews tamale contest

The Houston Chronicle has a preview of Saturday’s tamale eating contest written by a local competitive eating judge. The article also contains an interview with “Horsemen of the Esophagus” author Jason Fagone in which Fagone claims that eating contests have been banned in Japan (???) after the competitive eating related deaths.

Houston Hot Dog contest

A hot dog contest was held in Houston in which the prize was a pair of World Series tickets. The winner, Bill Hedge, consumed an impressive 16 hot dogs in about 10 minutes, which makes him a potential threat to qualify for Nathan’s.
