KSO VI September 27, 2009 w/ 2 rule changes
The Krystal Square Off twitter has a link to a blog entry announcing that this year’s finals will take place on September 27. The blog also announces two new rules changes: one will limit “detritus”, the second modification is not described.
As for the other change, Brad Wahl, the vice president of marketing at The Krystal Company, shared, “Let’s just say it’s a really big change; one that will make this year’s competition the most exciting in the six-year history of the Krystal Square Off. Much like the way the three-point shot revolutionized the game of basketball, this new rule will drastically alter the way eaters approach our contest from a strategic level.”
Article about Hall Hunt’s Krystal HoF induction
Clay Today has an article about Hall “Hoover” Hunt being inducted into the Jacksonville Krystal Hall of Fame with more information about the boxes that Hall Hunt will appear on:
A total of 15 customers are being recognized and inducted to the Hall of Fame. Three of those are from the Jacksonville area and all of those individuals will have their faces stamped on Krystal boxes that surpass one million units per person present in the states where the fast food restaurant can be found– “from Texas to Virginia and everywhere in between”.

Erik Denmark’s top 10 on missing the Krystal finals
Erik Denmark has a blog entry about the Memphis Krystal qualifier which concludes with his top 10 benefits of missing the Krystal Square Off finals. His final 3 items in the list:
3 - Not having to convince my friends and family to get in their car and drive 60 miles to the nearest bar that carries FSN South to watch me for a split second while the camera pans to the middle of the table
2 - Avoid the depressing realization that I won’t get the final burger count because I have to sprint off the stage and straight to the airport to catch the last flight back to Seattle because it is Sunday and I have to work tomorrow
1 - I still have a chance to win a contest and a title in Lewisville on Saturday!

Rich and Sonya go 5 for 5 in KSO finals
The results of today’s Memphis qualifier have kept two streaks alive. Rich Lefevre and Sonya Thomas are the only American eaters to have qualified for all five Krystal Square Off finals. A list of eaters who have qualified 3 or more times follows:
update IFOCE.com reports that Sonya Thomas has declined to attend the finals and that Crazy Legs Conti will take her slot.
Rich LeFevre wins Memphis Krystal qualifier
The Krystal Square Off twitter has the top 3 of this afternoon’s qualifier in Memphis:
1. Rich LeFevre 52 burgers
2. Juris Shibayama 51
3. Erik Denmark 50
If these are the official results the 3 wild cards will be:
1. Sonya Thomas 55
2. Juris Shibayama 51
3. Badlands Booker 51
If a fourth wild card is added Crazy Legs Conti or Erik Denmark would claim the slot with 50 burgers depending on whether Conti broke Denmark’s previous result of 43.
Memphis qualifier expected entrants
The Krystal Square Off blog has a preview of today’s qualifier in Memphis. Listed ranked entrants include Rich LeFevre, Crazy Legs Conti, Juris Shibayama, Erik Denmark and Chris Abatsas, Damon Serignet. Juris Shibayama’s competing in a second qualifier will give him the tiebreaker over Badlands Booker regardless of how much he eats.
Sonya Thomas will get in unless the top four breaks 55. Booker will have to hope that the runner-up does not exceed his total of 51.
Erik Denmark has blog entries about last weekend’s jalapeno contest and Krystal qualifier in Memphis. He has the following account of the Krystal overtime in Memphis:
In the 10 burger overtime eat-off, Rich Shea announced clearly to keep the eating clean - Juliet did not, she continued to stuff multiple burgers in and around her mouth getting about half of them in and half of them on the table and ground. She raised her hands in the air when her 10 burgers were out of the boxes, the crowd booed and the judges told her to eat the mess she had made. She continued to sweep up the sloppy burgers from the table and with every sweep of burger mess in to her mouth she raised her hands again looking for victory and the crowd booed louder. This continued for about the next 60 seconds, the crowd was now hoping that either Badlands or Juris would get through their 10 burgers before Juliet was done cleaning her mess.
But it didn’t happen, Juliet finally ate enough of what she had spilled to get the decision. Not a popular decision at all.
Erik Denmark also says that Kobayashi’s bye slot in the Krystal finals will be filled by an amateur pulled from the crowd and not a fourth wild card entrant.
