Charlotte (Concord Mills) entrants list
Here is a list of people I believe will enter Saturday’s Nathan’s qualifier at Concord Mills near Charlotte, NC. Please inform me of any others, and correct those who will not be attending:
Juliet Lee
Hall Hunt
Kevin Carr
Super Paul Barlow

Charlotte qualifier at Concord Mills
The location for the June 9 Charlotte Nathan’s qualifier has not been listed yet on the IFOCE or Nathan’s website, but the website for Concord Mills says it will take place at that site. Concord Mills is 10 miles northeast of Charlotte off I-85.
A haiku appears on an IFOCE website about the possibility of Boone and Steakbellie competing in that event. (It is surprising Steakbellie would travel south when there are plenty of qualifiers near Philly) Juliet Lee told Brian Seiken she intends to compete in Charlotte.
Conti coaches coastal Carolinian cookie competitor
A writer for the Wilmington (NC) Star-News wrote a column about being coached by Crazy Legs Conti for a Girl Scout cookie eating contest. One piece of advice offered by Crazy Legs:
“Make sure the Girl Scouts don’t get hit with cookie detritus or shrapnel,” Crazy Legs said. “Nothing ruins a green sash like cookie detritus.”
Krispy Kreme Challenge results

newsobserver.com has an article about the Krispy Kreme Challenge held yesterday in Raleigh, NC. 722 participants registered to eat a dozen doughnuts at the midpoint of a 4 mile run. NC State senior Auburn Staples won the event in about 24 minutes and required approximately 7 minutes to finish his doughnuts. He did the first two miles in about 8 minutes. KrispyKremeChallenge.com has full results.
Krispy Kreme Challenge – Raleigh, NC
(Thanks Jed Donahue) Eaters whose new year’s resolution is to exercise more might want to consider entering the Krispy Kreme Challenge in Raleigh, NC, on January 27 as it is the first contest I am aware of to include eating & cardiovascular activity. The contest will involve running from the NC State Bell Tower to a Krispy Kreme about 2 miles away, eating a dozen Krispy Kremes at that location, then running back to the bell tower. Regurgitation is frowned upon, but will apparently not result in disqualification. The race will be timed like a typical road race and proceeds will benefit the North Carolina Children’s Hospital.
2004 NC State Fair Sweet Potato Contest video
Video footage from the 2004 NC State Fair Sweet Potato Casserole Eating Contest can be seen at http://youtube.com/watch?v=Wb3yyOq4DTE Sonya Thomas won the contest, but she only makes an extremely brief appearance in the film.

NC collard eating contest: “a mission for God”
The Reflector reports that Donald Whichard and Darlene Pollard each won $100 by eating six pounds of collard greens in the men’s and women’s division of the collard-eating contest at the Collard Festival in Ayden, North Carolina on Saturday. Ms. Pollard claims that her collard victory was “a mission for God.”
Burritos for Life second round contest – Greensboro, NC
The Greensboro (NC) News-Record blog has a writeup of the second round Moe’s Burrito for Life contest. One of the contestants was police reporter Eric Townsend

Hopefully this will shut Luther up for a while.
It will be interesting to see what extracurricular activities Dale Boone was involved in. Brian Seiken claims Boone and Loren “Bubba” Yarbrough almost came to blows in Memphis.
NBC4: Sonya Thomas to do NC Ribs
NBC4 (Washington DC local news) interviewed Sonya Thomas after Nathan’s, which is mentioned in the station’s blog. Sonya said that she intended to do Friday’s rib contest at Harrah’s casino in Cherokee, NC. Dale Boone is also expected to compete in that contest and interesting (in the Chinese curse meaning of the word) things tend to happen when those two compete. I don’t believe that Sonya has ever lost in VA, DC, MD, DE or NC.
Charlotte and Baltimore hot dog eating contest
Two hot dog eating contests will be held this extended weekend. A hot dog eating contest will be held at Green’s Lunch in Charlotte on Saturday at 1 pm in honor of that establisment’s 80th birthday. On Monday, a hot dog eating contest will take place at Mother’s Grille in Baltimore at the conclusion of the Oriole’s season opener. Call the restaurants for contest details.
Duke U hot dog contest
A hot dog eating contest for Duke University students Tuesday was won by senior Tom Eberly who defeated last year’s champion Adedayo Adeniran with a result of 15 hot dogs in 4:21. Ms. Adeniran (who shows that great petite eaters do not need to be Asian) consumed 11 hot dogs in that time, a considerable improvement from last year’s result of 10 hot dogs in 6:22. Eberly’s graduation will give Adedayo the opportunity to regain the title next year.
There is no word on whether the champion will face off with the best hot dog eater from UNC.
NC Grilled Cheese Results
Thanks Bubba Yarbrough:
Hall Hunt 20
Bubba Yarbrough 19
Frank Wach 17 1/2
Brian Subich 15
Larry McNeil 14 1/2
Congratulations to Hall “Pretty Boy” Hunt, whose win combined with a 2nd place finish in the SC contest nets him $1,500 for the extended weekend. The final grilled cheese qualifier in Phoenix on Friday is apparently Joey Chestnut’s to lose.
Updated 10/18 8:47 am The Greensboro News-Record has an article about the contest.
9:29 am the blog for WRAL TV has an entry (and a photo gallery) about the contest.
NC State Fair route suggestion
Anyone driving from the northeast to the NC State Fair ought to take I-95 to new US 64 (which is not yet on any online maps) and not I-85 to US 1.
More Carolina grilled cheese
2004 NC sweet potato flashback
This forum thread describes Mara Thomas’ efforts to compete in the 2004 Sweet Potato Casserole contest held at the NC State Fair. (Based on the comments in the thread, she is apparently an eater of considerable abilities). She wound up having to miss the contest because it was held during working hours. If she enters the 2005 grilled cheese contest held at the same site she will not have to face Sonya Thomas who won the previous year’s event.
Carolina grilled cheese contest previews
This column by G. D. Gearino at newsobserver.com laments the replacement of last year’s sweet potato contest at the NC State Fair with a grilled cheese qualifier.
This article profiles an ultramarathoner, Ray Krolewicz, who plans to compete in the South Carolina State fair grilled cheese qualifier and then run a 50K (31 mile) race the next day.
