Heart Attack Grill in entrepreneur.com

(from heartattackgrill.com) There is an article about the Heart Attack Grill and its owner, “Dr.” John Basso, in entrepreneur.com:

His advice for wannabe entrepreneurs? “I’d tell people to create controversy,” suggests Basso, who refers to himself as the Patch Adams of the restaurant industry. Though he won’t release any financial information, Basso insists that word-of-mouth marketing has given the grill plenty of business. “What I’ve got, in marketing terms, is the purple cow,” he says. “We’ve designed something that people talk about naturally. We’ve never spent one penny, and never will spend one penny on advertisements. We simply have a website, and that’s it.”

Massagany / Misogyny at Heart Attack Grill?

The East Valley Tribune has an article about the Heart Attack Grill’s dispute with nursing organizations in which the owner of the restaurant, Jon Busso is quoted as saying “To say there is any massagany (sic) here is absolutely ridiculous”

It is somewhat difficult to accept the denial of misogyny in light of the restaurant’s blog entry for October 25:

The entire Grill was taken aback at the sight of this woman as she literally decimated a Quadruple Bypass Burger in front of our very eyes. Every macho man at the bar suddenly gave up his chauvinistic preconceptions of meat being a “man’s game” when she put us all to shame.

SADLY THOUGH, we found out that she was cheating! It turns out that she’s four months pregnant, so it’s obvious the little guy inside of her was helping her eat all that beef in record time. Our Quadruple Bypass Burger challenge is a sport of honor among gentlemen. Her cheating brought such disgrace to the Grill that we had to take her out back and work her over a bit. Hey, I know what you’re all thinking, but we confined our punches to the upper rib cage section to avoid the fetus. I mean we’re not Barbarians for Christ sakes!

Absolutely hilarious, if you find violence against pregnant women a laughing matter. The claims of male superiority in meat eating are difficult to accept given that Sonya Thomas is the only person to win the 9 pound Barrick Burger contest and Kate Stelnick and Lori Weiss are the only people to complete Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub’s 96er burger. Closer to the Grill, 115 pound Becky White of Tucson has completed the 72 ounce steak at the Big Texan Grill.

The nurses have put out a press release detailing their grievances against the restaurant.

Heart Attack Grill calls out IFOCE

While many fast food restaurants are promoting the healthiness of some of their menu items, the Heart Attack Grill in Arizona has gone in the opposite direction and calls its main offering “bypass burgers”. Those sandwiches can have up to two pounds of meat. The restaurant’s main gimmick is having its waitresses wear nurse outfits. The Arizona Board of Nurses has threatened a lawsuit against the restaurant. The restaurant has an extensive Wikipedia entry which is under threat of deletion

The grill does not have an eat it quickly and get it for free challenge, but it does have an Alpha Male Monday, in which a member of a party of four or more can get a free meal. There is a “Hall of Fame” on the restaurant website.

The Heart Attack Grill has a proto-blog which records happenings at the restaurant. In the June 2006 archives, the grill laid down a challenge to the IFOCE:

In fact, I still issue an open challenge to Kobayashi, The Black Widow (An “Honorary Guy” in anyone’s book), Joey Chestnut and the rest of those hotdog eating wussies at the IFOCE. Simrin is our King and there’s no questioning his superiority for the simple reason that he’s the world’s only competitive eating artist who works with the MANLY MEDIUM of the Quadruple Bypass Burger. The rest of the other sissies eat little wimpy hot dogs.
