CE to return to broadcast network TV?
AICE news has a press release about the television schedule for the Collegiate Nationals. The coverage will start with a one hour special on the entire Collegiate Nationals May 25 on CBS. If footage from the eating contest appears in this program, it will probably be the first time competitive eating has appeared on national broadcast television since the Glutton Bowl on Fox in 2002 (with the exception of some short contests on morning shows). The Collegiate Nationals will receive 15 days of coverage on CSTV starting May 26, which will hopefully allow the eating contests to be seen in their entirety.
Text from the press release is available after the jump. I do not know what format the press release on the AICE website is in, but it is not in HTML, PDF or Word format.

CSTV / AICE Collegiate Eating Championship announced
AICE News announces that the finals of the Collegiate Eating Championship will take place at the Wave House in San Diego on April 19. Three collegiate eaters with impressive eating resumes will receive byes, others can enter the finals by competing in a qualifier on April 18. “Furious” Pete of bodybuilding.com will probably be one of the three eaters to receive a bye. Entrants must be currently enrolled in at least three college credits. Foods have yet to be determined, but will be items popular with college students. Jack in the Box is the primary sponsor, so the contest might feature food from that chain.
The contest will be held as part of the Collegiate Nationals sponsored by CSTV. The Collegiate Nationals will consist of four multi-sport events for college students to be held this spring. The other San Diego events will be beach volleyball, flowboarding and a battle of the bands.
CSTV has been acquired by CBS and will be rebranded as the CBS College Sports Network in March during the NCAA basketball tournament. It was not announced if the eating contest will be televised on CSTV. I believe this is AICE’s first deal with a television network.
CSTV has its headquarters in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, like IFOCE / Shea Communications.

CityBeat on weekly Tower Bar contests
San Diego CityBeat has an article about the weekly eating contests held at the Tower Bar:
“The thing you have to remember,” says one contestant as he stacks his sandwiches on top of one another, “is it’s 90-percent mental.”
“You’ve gotta expand your diaphragm,” says his friend next to him, patting his extended belly. “I like to take the horizontal approach. You know, like Donald Duck eating corn. Oh, and my secret is to chew and wash it back with Guinness… and you can’t look at anyone else. You have to have the eye of the tiger.”“Go!” yells the bartender, and the sandwiches begin to disappear. There are various techniques—some eat around the edges first; others use the typewriter approach—but the ones who fare best are those who smash their stack of sandwiches into one revolting ball of peanut butter, banana and bread. Within minutes, there’s a winner who signifies his victory by downing a shot of whiskey, standing up on a barstool, holding his hands above his head, hollering and bouncing around like Rocky after he ran up the stairs.
“There’s some guys I don’t stand a chance against,” says the winner later, after settling down from his elation. But the six-time champion eater known as LFA (short for El Jefe, or The Boss) says he isn’t talking about a stereotypical fat guy. Surprisingly fit himself, LFA says it’s usually the skinny guy with skills who takes home the $30 bar tab, the Eating Competition’s coveted prize.

San Diego Grilled Cheese Results
Sonya Thomas won the San Diego grilled cheese contest August 3. Her total of 21.5 sandwiches was a considerable dropoff from the 25 she ate in February. Rich Lefevre was second with 20 and Carlene LeFevre took third place with 15. Over the past month, Rich Lefevre has participated in eating contests in every region of the country except for the gulf coast.
There are 14 remaining grilled cheese sandwich contests in the Golden Palace circuit, the next one taking place at the famous motorcycle rally in Sturgis, SD on August 10.
San Diego Grilled Cheese Contest
signonsandiego.com has an article promoting Sonya Thomas’ appearance in a grilled cheese sandwich contest at the minor league Surf Dawgs game Wednesday. There is not really any new information in the article. Sonya will attempt to break her record of 25 sandwiches in 10 minutes which she set in Venice Beach in February. There will be 15 (!) grilled cheese sandwich contests in the circuit, the next one located in South Dakota next week. If there are no limits on the number of contests an eater can enter, Sonya could really rack up some frequent flyer miles going to grilled cheese sandwich contests. All time leading run-scorer and base stealer Rickey Henderson plays for the Surf Dawgs, so if there was a Hall of Fame for competitive eating there would be two future Hall of Famers at the Surf Dawgs stadium Wednesday.
Pictures of Sonya and Carlene LeFevre at the last grilled cheese contest can be found at:
