Pat Philbin article in NorthJersey.com

NorthJersey.com has an article about Pat “from Moonachie” Philbin which focuses on his suspension and reinstatement.

“We felt that the video that he did for ‘Opie & Anthony’ was somewhat outrageous,” Shea said. “But I think that, given the overwhelming support that he has among fans, there was a sense that we reacted too quickly and too strongly.

“There was a rush to judgment,” Shea said. “And we reversed it.”

Nanobite burger contest preview

Zwire has a preview of tomorrow’s Nanobite burger eating contest at the Clinton Station Diner. The recipe for the 70+ lb. megaburger to be unveiled has apparently not been finalized and there is a $300 prize for naming it. Contest spectators are encouraged to bring at least $15 worth of groceries which will be used in care packages sent to overseas troops by Operation Shoebox.

The wayawesome blog has a picture of the Nanobite burger on top of a Mt. Olympus burger claiming that the burger patty weighs .4 oz, and the total weight is 1.4 oz, only .6 oz less than a Krystal / White Castle burger.

SexyFeast blog: Kate Stelnick finished 12.5 lb Zeus Burger?

An SexyFeast blog entry from January claims that Kate Stelnick finished the 12.5 pound Zeus burger from the Clinton Station Diner. Since I have not located any information that Kate has done any challenges outside Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub, I am assuming that the author saw the picture of Kate with the Zeus burger from the May 2005 AICE Zeus contest, in which Kate served as an honorary official and not a contestant, and jumped to the conclusion that she completed the burger. A Steakbellie blog entry from February says that the diner told him that no one had finished the burger in the three hour limit. Of course, both blog entries could be correct if Kate needed more than three hours.

The blog entry has an accompanying podcast, but no information about Kate’s potential feat can be found in it.

Steakbellie vs. Zeus

After a top 10 finish in Wing Bowl 14, blogger steakbellie is considering making an attempt at the 12.5 pound Zeus burger from the Clinton Station Diner, which no single eater has finished. In the comments, steakbellie says he contacted Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub, who repeated their assertion that Lori Weiss tied Kate Stelnick’s time. Denny’s has not updated their website to provide information about Ms. Weiss’ feat despite having over four months to do so.

Clinton Station Diner adds burger challenges

The Clinton Station Diner has added new challenges to its original offer of a free Zeus burger (7 meat, 12.5 lb. total) to diners who can complete that sandwich in under three hours. A two person Zeus challenge is now available with a time limit of 90 minutes. The west New Jersey eatery also now offers challenges for its burger containing 3 pounds of meat with a maximum of 2 hours for one eater and 45 minutes for a team. The diner increased the team size for its 50 pound Mount Olympus burger challenge to 5 eaters from four.

Flashback: AICE Zeus burger contest

With the Big Daddy burger contest tomorrow, it is an appropriate time to look back on the last megaburger contest, the AICE Zeus burger contest held at the Clinton Station Diner in New Jersey in May. Three person teams were allowed 75 minutes to finish the 12.5 pound sandwich. The only group to beat the deadline, the Tri-State Titans, finished with a time of 71 minutes, consisted of “Gentleman” Joe Menchetti, Arnie “Chowhound” Chapman, and Dominick “The Doginator” Cardo. The Titan’s efforts were almost invalidated by Chowhound’s vomiting soon after he completed the burger.

Kate Stelnick served as celebrity judge, her only involvement in an eating contest. The article does not state if it was her call if Chapman’s “reversal of fortune” occured after an allowable time. That experience might have been distasteful enough for her to withdraw completely from competitive eating. Another possible theory for her absence is suggested by her quote that she won a lot of bets from people who did not think she could finish the 96er burger. She could be winning a lot of money betting people in buffets and wants to keep a low profile so none of her potential victims recognize her (which could be the premise of a possible movie: “Svelte Co-eds Can’t Eat.” 😉 )

Humble Bob & Eater X conquer Pauliesaurus Pizza

“Humble” Bob Shoudt and “Eater X” Tim Janus were the first to conquer the “Pauliesaurus” megapizza from Paulie’s Pizza in New Brunswick, NJ, winning them a prize of $350. Beautiful Brian has a writeup of their evening on his website.

With the vanquishing of the Pauliesaurus, notable unconquered eating challenges include:

  • Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub’s 15 pound Belly Buster burger
  • Clinton Station Diner’s 50 pound (4 person team) Mount Olympus burger and 12 pound Zeus burger
  • The Rockford (MI) Corner bar’s 42.5 chili dogs in 4 hours. The current record has been held by Sharon Scholten, a 110 pound woman, for almost a quarter century. If this mark is bested, it is debatable if the victor should have an asterisk if he/she does not eat a giant Mexican lunch before like Sharon did. (As far as I know, Ms. Scholten’s mark is the most hot dogs ever eaten by a woman in a single session, but Sonya Thomas might change that on July 4, 2006)

50 pound burger gallery

(From ahamburgertoday.com comments:) Pictures of the 50 pound “Mount Olympus” burger are available at the website of radion station NJ 101.5 FM.

It is surprising that no local news articles about the “Mount Olympus” are available. Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub 15 pound burger received a substantial degree of national media attention. I guess the media is “megaburgered” out.

50 pound hamburger debuts in New Jersey

The AICE website’s news page mentions that the Clinton Station Diner in western New Jersey has developed the world’s largest hamburger, the Mount Olympus, weighing 50 pounds total. No local news articles are avaiable and the sandwich is not currently mentioned on the restaurant’s website. The only details about the burger that I have been able to find come from a Mini Cooper forum page:

25 lbs. of beef
5 tomatoes
4 onions
5 cups of pickles
17 lbs. of bread

5 people are allowed 3 hours to eat it.

It appears that the diner will not have to give out many free 50 pound burgers. The challenge requires each team member to eat 10 pounds, so the average member of a succesful team needs to have the gastronomic capacity of Kate Stelnick. Kobayashi, Sonya Thomas, Joey Chestnut, Rich LeFevre and Kate Stelnick could probably finish it, but some members of that group require more significant remuneration than a free meal.
