The facebook for the Buffalo Wing Festival announces that Joey Chestnut will compete in two contests on Labor Day Weekend. On Saturday, September 4, he will compete against teams of five amateurs in a contest sponsored by Pepto Bismol. On September 5, Joey Chestnut will try to break Sonya Thomas' streak of three wins in the United States Chicken Wing Eating Championship.

Mortimer Matz: Nathan’s hot dog contest 1916 start a fabrication
The New York Times has an interview with Mortimer Matz, who was Max Rosey’s partner in promoting the Nathan’s Famous hot dog eating contest in the 1970’s. Matz says that there is no basis for the claimed origin of the contest during World War I:
We said this was an annual tradition since 1916. In Coney Island pitchman style, we made it up.
After being contacted by the New York Times, a Nathan’s spokesman said the company had no evidence of pre-1970s competitions. (A Nathan’s contest held in 1967 in honor of the 100 year anniversary of the creation of the hot dog was reported by the UPI. Walter Paul reportedly won the contest by eating 127 hot dogs in an hour).
Matz also says that Nathan’s turned down the opportunity to be the sponsor for the New York City Marathon in 1976.
update Aug 20 Gothamist has a blog entry about Matz’ admission. Matz is featured in a 1979 New York Magazine article about press agents. The article does not bring up Matz’ work for Nathan’s, but the restaurant is mentioned in Godfather author Mario Puzo’s cover story about Coney Island.
The Buffalo News reports that Man vs. Food will record at The Silo in Lewiston, NY tomorrow. update Buffalo News has a report on the filming. The other two Buffalo area restaurants in the episode will be the Riverstone Grill on Grand Island and Mick & Angelo's Eatery and Bar in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
Cabrito's in New York City has started a taco challenge that will award free tacos to a diner who breaks the house taco record. The current record is 14 tacos in an hour. update the record is now 20 tacos
Gothamist reports that the BK Whopper Bar in Times Square will offer the NY Pizza Burger, a quadruple burger on an oversized bun topped with mozzarella, marinara sauce and "Tuscan Herb" mayonnaise. update The Stir has more details: the sandwich on a 9.5 inch bun will cost $12.99 and have one pound of hamburger meat.

A Pepto Bismol press release announces that Joey Chestnut will compete against a team of amateurs at the San Francisco Street Food Festival and Buffalo Wing Festival. The SF Street Food Festival takes place on August 21, same as the gyoza contest in Los Angeles, so Joey Chestnut might not be able to win his fourth straight gyoza contest.
