Philly.com Insider sources: Wing Bowl 18 on Feb 5, 2010

The Eagles Insider blog on Philly.com has an entry about Angelo Cataldi mentioning Wing Bowl 18:

By this time of the year, staffers would have met to start planning the annual Wing Bowl. That has not happened, though my sources assure me that Wing Bowl will go on Feb. 5, 2010.

Angelo Cataldi “not optimistic” on WIP extension

In response to a Philly.com column, Wing Bowl co-founder Angelo Cataldi has posted a blog entry about the status of his contract extension negotiations with 610-WIP:

But I’ve got to be honest here – because I have always tried to be honest with the listeners who have given me this great career and terrific life. I am not optimistic that I will be at the station beyond the end of 2009. CBS has really not budged from its original offer, and I have no reason to believe they will now. There is simply no scenario in which I would agree to that offer.

Cataldi’s contract expires at the end of the year.

WIP Wing Bowl 13 fine cancelled

RadioInk reports that the $4,000 fine 610 WIP received for FCC violations has been cancelled, but the station will still pay that amount to the federal government:

The new consent decree ends the investigation and cancels the forfeiture. Instead, CBS Radio will make a voluntary contribution to the Treasury and create a compliance plan within 30 days that will include a memo to all WIP programming staff that explains FCC contest rules and station procedures.

List of Philadelphia area eating challenges in the eatfeats database

It would be interesting to learn why a made for TV sandwich at Tony Luke’s was used as the episode’s challenge when Jim’s Steaks has maintained a cheesesteak record for over 30 years. Perhaps the current record of 13 cheesesteaks in an hour by “Humble” Bob Shoudt was too daunting. (The program guide says that Jim’s Steaks will appear in the episode.)

13 cheesesteaks might not be the overall Philadelphia record. In a 1978 article, Lynda Kuerth, Jim’s steaks record holder from 1977 to 2001 (11 sandwiches) said she ate 15 steak sandwiches during a visit to Philadelphia. (The location and duration of that feat was not mentioned.)

Philly.com on El Wingador vs. Canseco press conference

Philly.com has an article about yesterday’s press conference to promote tonight’s match between Jose Canseco and Bill “El Wingador” Simmons, who expressed dissatisfaction with his remuneration:

Only Canseco – because he’s the “name” – is paid a “celebrity appearance fee” upfront. That ticked off Simmons.

“[Feldman] is giving Canseco $10,000,” Simmons told me. “I’m only getting $2,000. That’s disrespectful.”

Simmons said he wanted $5,000 for tonight’s fight and threatened to withhold the $4,400 he claimed he raised from selling tickets.
