Wing Bowl Eve notes
610 WIP has announced its Wing Bowl odds and lists Rich LeFevre as the fourth biggest favorite behind Joey Chestnut, Robocop and Freak of Nature in the Wing Bowl at 5 to 1 odds. If you can find someone who will give you those odds on Rich, you might want to consider making that bet.
The Wing Bowl weigh-in will be at 5 pm today at Chickie’s & Pete’s sports bar.
The Pottstown Mercury has a profile on Dave “The Dumpster” Moya, who received a pep rally yesterday.
The sports prof has a commentary on the Wing Bowl.
Wing Bowl supplier
The Philadelphia City Paper has an article on the official supplier of wings for the Wing Bowl, the Rib Ranch. That restaurant supplies the contest with smaller than normal wings with mild barbeque sauce to maximize the amount of wings eaten. Some competitors buy buckets of 50 wings to practice. The owner of the Rib Ranch claims that “The contestants always say the wings are great.”
Another Wing Bowl “Widow”
The field for Wing Bowl 14 has been set and philly.com has some information on some of the competitors. The only woman competing, Melissa Perzin, has modified Sonya’s nickname and is calling herself “The White Widow.” Joey Chestnut and Rich LeFevre will not be the only entrants travelling a long distance. There will also be an (unnamed) competitor from Red Deer, Alberta, Cananda.
Updated 11:54 Another connection between race and the Wing Bowl besides Melissa’s nickname can be found in this discrimination lawsuit against WIP. I wonder if the lawsuit will use Badlands Booker’s possibly bogus disqualification from Wing Bowl 13 as supporting its claim of bias.
Wing 5 winner’s blog
Joey Badafuco/Wing Tut, who won the Wing 5 qualifier at Lucy’s Bar yesterday, has an account of his victory and training on his blog. Joey also competed in the Salty Ball contest this summer.
Updated 1/28 10:20 am : Joey Badafuco thinks 135 wings should win the contest and does not know who “Rich LaFevre” is.
“El Wingador” without the Wing Bowl
nj.com has an article about what Bill “El Wingador” Simmons is doing now that he is unable to compete in Wing Bowl 14. He is opening a restaurant and hopes to compete in Wing Bowl 15. The article mentions Joey Chestnut as a favorite for the contest.
Wing Bowl movie & clothing information
Philly.com has more information about the Wing Bowl movie under development and also announces that a line of Wing Bowl clothing will hit the marketplace before the February 3 contest.
Philly Edge Wing Bowl list
PhillyEdge.com has a list of twelve things you need to know about Wing Bowl 14. Bill “El Wingador” Simmons believes that the ban on previous competitors will result in a win for a Philadelphia area eater. Simmons is also writing his autobiography.
Second Wing Bowl collegiate qualifier
The second “Wing 5” qualifier was held Tuesday night at the Landmark American Tap and Grille in Glassboro, NJ. The contest was only open to Philadelphia area college students. Mike Foster won a place in the Wing Bowl by eating 31 wings in 10 minutes. A video of Foster is available.
Send out the (Kensington) Klown
Hank the Tank attempted to circumvent Wing Bowl 14’s ban of previous competitors by unsuccessfully disguising himself as the “Kensington Klown.” (Brian Seiken would probably claim that all Wing Bowl 14 entrants from the Delaware Valley are clowns regardless of whether they wear makeup.)
Melissa beats husband to win Wing Bowl spot
Rich LeFevre will not be the only member of a competitive eating couple appearing in Wing Bowl 14. Melissa beat her husband to obtain a berth in the February 3 contest. Beating her stunt’s time limit (which is not clear on the video) required a very serious amount of “chipmunking.”
Joey Chestnut’s Wing Bowl stunt impresses
Lisa, a South Jersey resident who goes to graduate school in Canada, was extremely impressed by Joey Chestnut’s Wing Bowl qualifying stunt of drinking a gallon of milk in under a minute. Lisa’s father has tickets to the Wing Bowl.
Joey Chestnut qualifies for the Wing Bowl
While the San Francisco Bay area will not produce a Super Bowl winner in 2006 (or apparently many years into the future), the odds that of that region producing a champion in Wing Bowl 14 greatly increased when San Jose State student Joey “Jaws” Chestnut qualified by drinking a gallon of milk in 41 seconds Monday morning (philly.com video) . (The other favorite for the Wing Bowl, Rich LeFevre, lived in suburban San Francisco before retiring to Las Vegas several years ago). Chestnut has made five trips to the eastern time zone since the start of November to pursue his competitive eating career. It will be interesting to see if Wing Bowl 15 has geographic restrictions in addition to prohibiting previous competitors to ensure that a local wins the contest.
Wing Bowl charity announced
WIP announced that the Wing Bowl ticket revenues will be used to help construct a basketball court for the Sonny Hill Community Involvement Basketball League. The location of the court has not been determined.
First Wing Bowl collegiate qualifier
The Daily Pennysylvanian has a contest write up of the first “Wing 5” collegiate qualifer which was won by Tim “Dr. Slob” Cusice of West Chester College with 61 chicken wings in 10 minutes.
Wing Bowl qualifying criteria loosened
After only 2 of the first 6 or 7 hopeful competitors successfully completed their qualifying stunts (and one of those two was Rich LeFevre) it appears that the degree of difficulty of the qualifying stunts has been loosened. A recent successful stunt involved eating a pound of cookie dough in four minutes and another required eating two meatball subs in five minutes.
Beautiful Brian Seiken has an article about the degree of difficulty for Wing Bowl 14 qualifying stunts.
Rich LeFevre qualifies for Wing Bowl
Philly.com’s Wing Bowl page mentions that Rich “The Locust” LeFevre qualified for the Wing Bowl this morning by eating 12 cans of Vienna sausage in 5 minutes at the Borgata casino in Atlantic City. A video of Rich’s qualification is available on that page. I am not sure that the Wing Bowl organizers expected a skinny ex-accountant from Las Vegas to be the favorite (assuming Joey Chestnut does not attempt to qualify) when they barred previous competitors from entering.
Wing Bowl 14 qualifying underway
Qualifying for Wing Bowl 14 has begun with T Bone Tony’s attempt to eat 3 pounds of sirloin in 9 minutes 30 seconds. Philly.com’s Wing Bowl Page will have information and videos of all the qualifying attempts. Philadelphia area college students can qualify without performing a stunt by winning one of several contests to be held near Philadelphia area colleges. (Could this be Kate Stelnick’s opportunity to return to competitive eating?)
The Wing Bowl Rules explicitly ban AICE members. It is difficult to discern what the Wing Bowl gains from its association with IFOCE, as its most popular members are prevented from competing by the ban on previous entrants and all the publicity and qualifying for the event is handled by WIP.
Chip Simpson is probably the favorite if he decides to qualify. Brian Subich and Pat Philbin are other IFOCE members to watch. (This assumes that no IFOCE members from outside the northeast enter.)
ESPN.com Page 2 lists Wing Bowl article as one of its top 5 articles of year
ESPN.com’s Page 2 has a list of its top five articles for 2004-2005 which includes an article on the 2005 Wing Bowl, “The Worst Event Ever” by Jim Caple.
Chowhound Chapman vs. Wing Bowl
Philly.com has an article describing the complaint Arnie “Chowhound” Chapman lodged with the Federal Communications Commission. Chapman claims that his being prevented from competing in the 2005 Wing Bowl after successfully completing his qualifying stunt violates the FCC statute that on-air contests must have fair and consistent rules. A video clip of the Chowhound’s stunt in which he ate 28 clementines is available.
In other Wing Bowl news, the Philadelphia City Paper claims that the 2005 Wing Bowl was probably fixed so that Bill “El Wingador” Simmons could beat Sonya Thomas.
Wing Bowl tickets on ebay
Several sellers have put Wing Bowl tickets up for sale on ebay. They are asking, and generally getting a good deal more than the $5 face value.
Wing Bowl 14 sells out
WIP 610 has announced that the Wing Bowl has sold out in a little more than 24 hours despite the lack of previous competitors.
Update 10/26 11:26 pm philly.com has more information about Wing Bowl ticket sales (go to the bottom of the page). 18,000 tickets were sold, which is probably about the capacity for basketball or hockey.
Pat from Moonachie encouraged to do Wing Bowl
In this forum thread for the Opie and Anthony show, Pat (from Moonachie, NJ) Philbin is encouraged by his fans to participate in the Wing Bowl. One fan is apparently not upset about the lack of previous competitors in Wing Bowl 14, for he plans to camp out for tickets starting 24 hours before they go on sale.
“Virgin” (and non-free) Wing Bowl 14
Speedeat.com mentions that the next Wing Bowl will be closed to all previous competitors and have a $5 admission charge. 610 WIP’s Wing Bowl page makes this information official. Tickets will go on sale starting Sunday. The starting time will remain 6am the Friday before the Super Bowl. All admission fees are allocated to charity, but if the net result of the restrictions is a victory for Joey Chestnut or Rich LeFevre, they might want to use some of those funds for additional security.
