The Vallejo Times herald has an interview with Joey Chestnut in which he discusses his first loss to an American since the chili cheese fries contest at the Queen Mary in February. The article says that all top 3 eaters ate in the 9-9.99 lb range. The controversial judgement awarding Bob Shoudt the victory over Sonya Thomas is not mentioned.

Krystal Square Off III results

Here are today’s results from the Krystal Square Off III finals and the difference between the eater’s previous personal best:

1st 97 $10000 Takeru Kobayashi Nagano, Japan +28 PB
2nd 91 $7500 Joey “Jaws” Chestnut San Jose, CA +29 PB
3rd 76 $3500 Pat “Deep Dish” Bertoletti Chicago, IL +28 PB
4th 65 $2000 “Humble” Bob Shoudt Royersford, PA +14 PB
5th 55 $1350 Tim “Eater X” Janus New York City, NY +2 PB
5th 55 $1350 Chip “The Phenom” Simpson Harrisville, PA +2 PB
7th 53 $1000 Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas Alexandria, VA -9 PB
8th 52 $800 Rich “The Locust” LeFevre Henderson, NV +1 PB
9th 44 $700 “The Natural” Arturo Rios, Jr. Long Branch, NJ +8 PB
10th 42 $600 “Crazy Legs” Conti New York City, NY +4 PB
11th 40 $500 Seaver “the Achiever” Miller Ashburn, VA -1 PB
12th 38 $400 Dale Boone Atlanta, GA +1 PB
13th 36 $300 Justin Mih Cambridge, MA ties PB

Congratulation to everyone for some amazing performances. The top three eaters beat their previous records by an amazing 28, 29 and 28 burgers. All eaters living someplace besides Northern Virginia at least tied his or her previous best. Kobayashi led most of the contest, but Joey was on his heels the entire way. For KSO IV, they should have signboards with three digits, at least for Kobayashi and Joey.

I am curious what happened with Sonya. She was in the 3rd position after a minute and a half with 22 and a significant gap between 4th, but she seemed to hit a wall at that point and fell out of the top five after three minutes so I am not sure what happened to her after that point.

I hope we do not have to wait seven months to see Kobayashi challenge the top American eaters. Kobayashi at the Wing Bowl would be an interesting possibility, but I assume he would want a more objectively judged contest with better crowd control.

The Wave Magazine interviews Joey Chestnut

The Wave Magazine of Silicon Valley has an interview with Joey Chestnut. Joey declares himself the greatest American eater and is quoted as describing pre-Kobayashi competitive eating “pretty much a joke.” Eaters who debuted before 2001 would probably disagree with that statement.

Salt Lake City Weekly competes in sausage contest

The Salt Lake City weekly has a report from the goldenpalace.net Italian Sausage contest held at the Utah State Fair. The author competed in the event and finished last.

Much to my surprise, an IFOCE-sponsored eating competition is exciting. I’ll probably never again be introduced to the heavy beat of Eminem’s 8 Mile theme. The music swelled louder and louder until finally LeFevre, Bertoletti and Chestnut took their places center stage. On the way past, Bertoletti touched fists and wished me “good luck.” I’d need it.

2. Sonya Thomas 21 waffles $1500, +3 from 2005

Paul Barlow says an unknown eater matched Joey & Sonya in the first half of the contest up until about 11 waffles, then had a DQ.

It will be interesting to see what contests (if any) Sonya does before the Krystal finals. Sonya did not compete between Labor Day weekend and Halloween weekend last year.

1st: Joey Chestnut, $2,500, 4.5 lbs. of ribs

3rd: Rich LeFevre, $750, 3.8 lbs.

results updated 8/20 4:25 pm from ifoce.com

from that blog:

They held the world gyoza eating championship. Steamed dumplings. The winner got $2500. I guess there’s this whole league of professional eaters. They all knew each other and fly around…eating. The people who came in 2nd and 3rd ate 10 percent of their body weight in 10 minutes!!! f***ing incredible. The winner was a bit larger though. You might think that chick wouldn’t do so well, but she came in 2nd. They had all these strategies like covering their mouth so air wouldn’t get in and dipping them in water to help them slide down, and they’d hop around a bit to settle it and get out any burps. Some amatuers competed along with the pros, I mean some fat ass dudes. They amatuers ate like 40 or so (I’ve eaten maybe 24 and I’m stuffed). The record they set was 162 if I remember correctly.
